Azzurri
I visited the flagship store of Mr. Wakiya, who represents famous Japanese Chinese cuisine, in Akasaka. It is located in a hidden house-like building on a back street just a few minutes' walk from Akasaka Station. The restaurant was originally a traditional Japanese inn. This time, I was guided to a private room on the second floor and enjoyed a seasonal recommended course using plenty of fresh ingredients.
We started with a toast with champagne. Henri Giraud's Esprit Nature champagne shone in amber color with fine bubbles and a pleasant fruity taste. The course started with nine delights using seafood and mountain delicacies. The appetizers included taro with karasumi, fruit tomato with sweet vinegar, jellyfish with black vinegar, yuba roll with soy sauce, tofu and greens with whitebait XO sauce, stir-fried bamboo shoots, homemade char siu, and roasted duck. Enjoy a variety of delicious appetizers.
Next, we had a trio of dim sum, which included vegetable-filled steamed dumplings, juicy shrimp shumai, and crispy chicken wings. The special dish was the stir-fried live lobster with chili peppers, which was not too spicy but had a delightful flavor. The crispy and juicy chicken wings were also delicious.
We then had a tasting set of Shaoxing wine, which included a 5-year and a 15-year aged wine. The 5-year wine had a sharp taste, while the 15-year wine had a mellow flavor. The meat dish was pork and crab meat wonton soup with shredded shark fin topping, which was incredibly delicious.
For the main course, we had grilled beef skewers and stir-fried Japanese beef with a mix of vegetables. The meal also included a choice of three types of noodles: spicy and flavorful tantan noodles, soy sauce-based light noodles, and creamy curry rice. We overindulged and filled our stomachs.
For dessert, we enjoyed an artistic dish that reminded us of spring, with Shonan Gold jelly, almond tofu underneath, and a peony-inspired crispy Chinese pastry with elegant lotus leaf-filled sweet filling. The unique creativity and skill in both the dishes and ambiance of this modern Chinese restaurant were truly impressive. We leisurely enjoyed the high-end Chinese cuisine with opera music playing in the background, making it a delightful evening. Bon appétit!
