I visited the long-awaited "Grill French" in Kyoto on a Saturday after making a lunch reservation around Wednesday. Upon arriving near Kyoto Sanjo Station, I killed time at a cafe until it was time for my reservation and then entered the restaurant. The restaurant was tucked away on a side street from the main road, and I was initially like, "Huh? Where's the restaurant?" The exterior had a bit of a hidden gem feel, which got me excited! When I entered through the door on the first floor, there was a sign saying to go upstairs, and customers for private rooms were directed downstairs. Upon reaching the second floor, I was seated at the counter right in front. Looking around the restaurant, there were around 10 counter seats and a few tables out of sight. The ambiance was accompanied by soft background music, but it was mostly drowned out by the chatter and kitchen sounds. Just a heads up, photography of the menu is prohibited. Since I had come all this way, I decided to order salad, soup, and a main dish à la carte. I chose the warm option for the soup. The soup was served in a wide and deep bowl, with a light yellow color and a white cream hue, accompanied by croutons. It was a thin soup with a subtle potato flavor. It leaned towards a watery consistency, so it was more on the liquid side rather than crispy croutons. It was delicious, but personally, I prefer creamy soup with crispy croutons, so it didn't quite match my preference. The small salad included tomatoes, white asparagus, cabbage, cucumber, and potato salad. The freshness was high, and the seasoning was simple with Italian dressing. The white asparagus was boiled to a soft and melty texture. The potato salad had large diced potatoes, providing a satisfying bite, and I personally enjoyed it. The salad was topped with pepper as an accent, simple yet delicious. The main plate featured a hamburger with an egg on top, using a thick type of hamburger topped with a semi-cooked egg yolk. The egg yolk was nicely runny. The only side dish was boiled broccoli, which felt a bit lacking. The hamburger was juicy and flavorful, tightly packed with meat juices, and the sauce was a very standard demi-glace. The thick egg topping looked visually appealing, with a more pronounced presence of egg white compared to a regular egg, and the smoothness of the yolk was spot on. The broccoli was just average. The rice was cooked perfectly, fluffy and satisfying. I finished the meal feeling content. Throughout the meal, the chef was overseeing the dining area and giving instructions. He seemed quite elderly, so I wondered if he might be retiring soon. I left the restaurant with an interest in how such a renowned establishment would be carried on in the future. Finally, I settled the bill in cash and left. While all the dishes were of high quality, I didn't encounter that "wow" dish, so I look forward to trying different items on my next visit. Thank you for reading this far. Enjoyed the meal!
