Kushiro Gourmet #6: Salmon Banya Recommended by a friend who had previously traveled to Kushiro, Salmon Banya is a popular spot with a rating of 3.63 on Tabelog (as of 10/16/22). I decided to try it for breakfast since they open at 7:30 am, making it a great option for those who want to explore tourist spots early in the morning. Among the freshly caught seafood on display, I ordered salmon belly, immature salmon, and fresh saury with rice. The staff cooks the food for you, so you can trust them to do a good job. The salmon belly was shiny with fat on the surface, indicating its deliciousness even before tasting it. And indeed, it was incredibly delicious! The crispy skin, melting flesh, and juicy fat combined to create a rich flavor that made the rice disappear quickly. Next was the immature salmon, known for its high fat content due to being pre-spawning. It was soft and had a sweet fatty taste that was exquisite. Finally, I tried the fresh saury with a bit of soy sauce. The rich flavor of the flesh and roe was irresistible. This is the ultimate breakfast in Kushiro, so I highly recommend trying it out. I arrived at Kushiro Airport early in the morning, so I went to this shop that was open for business from the morning. They have a system where you can choose items from the refrigerated case and have them grilled on the hearth. I wanted to try the sea urchin bowl, so I ordered the hokke (Okhotsk Atka mackerel). The belly meat, oysters, and shishamo also looked delicious. I was able to get in right away around 10 o'clock on Saturday.

On the morning of the second day of my trip to Eastern Hokkaido, I visited a popular restaurant near the fishing port. It was a weekday and we were the only customers since we arrived right when it opened. We picked our food inside the restaurant, paid at the counter, and then went to the adjacent hearth cooking area to eat. The staff grilled the food for us skillfully. We had grilled belly, shishamo, salmon, rice, and miso soup for breakfast. It was a luxurious meal. The grilled belly was exceptional - crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, with sweet fat and umami bursting with every bite. Definitely the best grilled belly I've ever had. It was delicious!

On the second day of the Obon holiday, we visited Sakura Falls, God's Child Pond, and the back of Lake Mashu for lunch from our accommodation in Kiyosato Town. The restaurant we were aiming for was closed, but we found another highly recommended place with good reviews and ranked in the top 5000. Luckily, it wasn't too crowded. For lunch, we ordered the Ebi Ikura Don (2380 yen) and Salmon Scallop Don (1980 yen), both in medium size. After paying, we were given a food ticket and seated at a designated table. The charcoal grill section was separate from where we were seated, as we ordered rice bowls. The food arrived promptly, and we were instructed to mix wasabi with soy sauce. The Salmon Scallop Don was delicious and easy to eat, a popular choice for everyone. The Ebi Ikura Don was also excellent, with clear and flavorful shrimp that stood out from the first bite. The ikura didn't need soy sauce as it was already seasoned. The charcoal grill dishes also looked appetizing. Overall, it was a delightful meal.

Abe Shoten Factory Direct Sales Store, a dining place called "Salmon-ya" with a spacious parking lot. The entrance has a large wooden bear carving welcoming you, and you can take a number tag for ordering meals. The system allows you to wait in your car when it's crowded. I went during off-peak lunch hours on a weekday and was able to get in smoothly. You pay at the register before ordering, with the option to choose small, medium, or large sizes. I ordered a small salmon roe bowl with miso soup, and it was delicious with plump and flavorful salmon roe. The scallops were also fresh and tasty. You can also enjoy self-service tea or water at the table. The restaurant seems like a fun place to come with friends for a lively seafood grilling and salmon roe bowl experience. I visited without knowing that the main dish was grilled at the table. Since I was short on time, I ordered a seafood bowl. The ingredients were average. The taste was also just average. I was happy to find scallops in it. It was early, so I was the only customer there. The seating was more like for barbecue, with chairs and tables.

"Kaisendon Salmon-ya" I arrived a little before the opening and checked in for the robatayaki on a tablet at the entrance of the restaurant. The shishamo female was 300 yen, the salmon belly was 470 yen, the scallop was 400 yen, and the oyster was 380 yen. You can also add rice, miso soup, and other grilled items besides fish. First visit. I went for lunch on a weekday. Had high expectations due to the good reviews. In conclusion, the food was okay but not great in terms of cost performance. If you just want to eat a seafood bowl, you could probably find a cheaper and closer place. However, the atmosphere is nice, so it might be good to come with friends and enjoy the charcoal grilling together. You can experience the taste of Kushiro. Next time I come, I'll try the grilled fish.

The reception system has been automated. I arrived about 15 minutes before opening, but there were 8 groups ahead of me. It was Golden Week, so the wait was reasonable. I was seated in less than 30 minutes. They didn't grill the bones of the hokke fish this time, maybe because it was busier than usual... But I'm still very satisfied. The young grilling chef was polite. I had my usual favorites - hokke fish, scallops, shrimp, and of course, a bowl of white rice! While the bowl is good, the white rice is a must here. I also ordered the tokishirazu, which is tasty with its protein. The rice goes down smoothly. And the additional order of salmon liver marinade goes so well with the rice! Delicious. The salmon liver from Daimaru Satosui is also good, but not as good as this. I'm full from the morning. Hotel buffets are nice, but if I'm going to be full anyway, this is the best place to go in the morning.

When you go to Kushiro, I recommend visiting the salmon shop. You can choose the fish yourself and they will grill it for you in the building next door. You can order rice and miso soup to go with it. This time, I ordered belly and hokke. The staff grilled them well and showed me where the bones were. Belly has a lot of fat so the heat increases when grilled. It takes about 10 minutes to cook, but the belly and hokke were very delicious. There is a souvenir corner in the store and they can also deliver locally. After eating this belly, you'll want to send it to someone. The vending machine for cola looks like the old type, but when you press the button, the bottle rolls out for you to pull out. In the past, the bottle was visible from the beginning and you had to pull it out after putting in the money. I will definitely go back to eat again.

During the Kushiro expedition, I had "Striped Hokke 380 yen & Rice (medium) 200 yen & Miso soup 80 yen" for breakfast. It was the second day of a one-night, two-day reunion with my classmates. I woke up early to have breakfast here. This place is a direct-operated store by local fisheries. When I was working in Kushiro, I often came here to buy gifts. Now, they seem to grill the fish you choose. At 7:28, there was already a surprising 3 groups waiting. I chose the Striped Hokke. Three solo business travelers, hungry and waiting for a while. I entered the venue 20 minutes later. Surprisingly, the turnover is fast. When I sat down, the lady quickly grilled the fish. Her efficient work is truly THE craftsman. She skillfully removed the bones with tongs (surprising). The Striped Hokke is delicious (tears). The exquisite saltiness is in the realm of no soy sauce. It must be thanks to the lady's skilled grilling. It is perfectly plump. The rice goes well with it! My two classmates seem to feel the same way. The three middle-aged men silently eat. The salmon belly with rich fat was also superb. This breakfast is the best in my life! When I come to Kushiro again, I will definitely visit here!

I decided to have lunch at this famous restaurant in the Kushiro area. I arrived around 11:30 on a weekday. At the entrance, I had the option to go to the grill area or just have a meal. I chose the grill option using the terminal. There were already three customers waiting. I picked my favorite ingredients using a bat and tongs. It was a bit expensive, but considering the charcoal grill prepared, it seemed reasonable. My partner and I made our selections. We chose large salmon belly, rare silver cod cheeks, flavorful dried flounder, and scallops. We also ordered ikura scallop rice bowl and a large serving of rice. As side dishes, we got salmon roe and spicy squid. After paying, we had to wait for about 10 minutes for the charcoal fire to be ready. Finally, we were guided to the grill tent. The staff grilled everything for us. We enjoyed miso soup while waiting and then dug in. The salmon belly was perfectly seasoned, and it paired well with rice. The rice with salmon roe was also delicious. The flounder and cod cheeks were fatty and tasty. Ordering a large rice was a good choice. The ikura scallop rice bowl was also delightful. Robatayaki (grilled food cooked in front of you) was delicious! We stopped by in Kushiro during a drive, so I couldn't drink, but everyone else had beers. My husband loves haras (crab innards), while I prefer shellfish. The prices were a bit high, as expected in a tourist spot, but the food was really good. I think robatayaki is better enjoyed on cooler days rather than hot summer days.

I remembered seeing it on Sekkaku Gourmet by Banana Man and decided to visit. I walked from Kushiro Station and it was so cold! Arrived at the salmon restaurant with an empty stomach, the atmosphere was great. Since I was alone, I couldn't order much... I think it's best to go with a large group after all. No matter what you eat, the taste is always spot on and highly recommended!

Beer in the morning is also a highlight of the trip (ironically, this might be the only place open on Sunday mornings). On Sundays when the market is closed, I decided to try this place that I've been curious about for a while. I know it's popular among tourists, but I thought it might be better than a hotel. I had the ikura scallop rice bowl and some grilled dishes. It was just as I expected! It was delicious, but nothing out of the ordinary. The scallops in the bowl were soft, which was a bit disappointing. I wanted them to be more firm. The salmon roe and grilled dishes were both delicious in a normal way. Thank you for the meal.

Enjoyed a meal at "Sakaban-ya" in Kushiro City, Hokkaido, featuring an Ebi and Ikura Donburi with Robatayaki. Located about a 30-minute walk from Kushiro Station on the JR Nemuro Main Line. After paying at the register, head to the grilling area where your seafood is cooked for you. The Ebi and Ikura Donburi (medium size) arrives at your table. Despite being a bit small for the price, the taste is exceptional, especially the marinated ikura. The sweet shrimp is also delicious. The scallops are thick and juicy, while the salmon belly is fatty and flavorful. A satisfying meal overall, but with the recent price increase, it may not feel as good of a deal.
