Located in front of Nanzen-ji Temple, the annex of the long-established ryotei "Hyotei" has been cherished as a teahouse for many years. The current season's breakfast porridge is served at the annex instead of the main building. Established in the 8th year of Tenpo (1837), Hyotei has been a popular spot for visitors even before that as a teahouse. The entrance still retains its traditional charm with tea pots, low tables, and straw sandals displayed. The tea room with a thatched roof called "kuzuya" is a 400-year-old building with several separate spaces in the sukiya-zukuri style. The current owner is the 14th generation, Mr. Eichi Takahashi, a renowned figure in Kyoto cuisine recognized as a Kyoto Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property holder. The morning porridge and seasonal dishes served at Hyotei have been passed down through generations, inspired by the early morning visits of Kyoto's nightlife crowd and geisha to the restaurant through Maruyama Park. I have wanted to visit here since my visit to the nearby Muryoan, and finally, after many years, I made it. The breakfast menu at Hyotei Annex includes "Asagayu" (porridge), starting with plum tea, followed by the famous Hyotei tamago with hassun, assorted dishes on three tiers, and various side dishes in a traditional kaiseki style. The menu also features dishes like "Hiryu-head and anago no takikawase," "Yomogi tofu," and "Tai no mozuku soe, oroshi." The signature dish "Hyotei tamago" is a must-try, along with the exquisite half-cooked egg. The staff's efficient and courteous service, along with the quick yet meticulous preparation, left a lasting impression. Even in the late Edo period book "Hana Rakumeisho," Hyotei's half-cooked chicken eggs were mentioned as a famous dish known beyond Kyoto.

Matsukado Bento ☆ 3.4 Matsukado is a long-established Japanese restaurant with a history of over 400 years, and is a famous representative of Kansai, having received three stars in the Michelin Guide. Their specialty is the morning porridge that appeared in the manga "Oishinbo," which is so popular that reservations are essential. I had always wanted to try the morning porridge at Hyotei someday. I arrived before noon on a weekend and informed the staff that I didn't have a reservation, to which they responded, "It starts at ¥X,000 per person!" When I mentioned that I had come to the annex, they coldly directed me there. The main building didn't seem accessible. There were no customers inside. Later, two groups arrived, but it didn't seem busy at lunchtime. There was no food menu, so I ordered the Matsukado Bento. It arrived after a while. Let's dig in! It was quite ordinary, nothing particularly noteworthy. Perhaps because of the unpleasant service, it didn't differ much from the bento boxes sold in department stores. Despite the lack of customers inside, the dishes kept coming one after another, and desserts and tea were served rapidly, making it feel like they wanted us to leave quickly. Thank you for the meal. Although I had admired the morning porridge, in terms of service and value for money, it wasn't a good fit for me. No plans to revisit.

Since I made a last-minute reservation, I couldn't get an early time slot. I visited Nanzen-ji Temple in the morning and had a late start with morning porridge. It tasted just as delicious as it did a few years ago. I especially like the soft-boiled egg and shredded Japanese pepper here.

I visited for lunch. I ordered a Matsukado bento box for around 6000 yen. The bento box included tamago (omelette), mackerel with miso paste, sea bream sashimi, conger eel wrapped in turnip, thick fried tofu, simmered yuba (tofu skin), white fish wrapped in kelp, monkfish liver, tempura of butterbur sprouts, and Kyoto-style deep-fried tofu with simmered vegetables. The soup was duck and wheat gluten. The rice dish was steamed sushi. For dessert, there was egg ice cream. The overall taste was elegant, refined, and delicious. The mackerel with miso paste was tender and flavorful, while the sashimi had a chewy texture that was enjoyable. Even though these were familiar dishes, the way they were prepared here was truly impressive. However, I felt that 6000 yen was a bit expensive. I think I was more impressed by the morning porridge. I also found the staff's service to be a bit lacking, and the alcohol menu was not very appealing, with only bottled beer in 500ml sizes and unclear choices for sake and shochu. Perhaps they discourage drinking during the day...

On the final morning of the training trip, we visited the renowned restaurant "Hyotei Bekkan" located in Nanzenji, where the head chef recommended trying the limited-time dish "Quail Porridge" until the 15th of this month. It had been 4 to 5 years since my last visit, and the historic atmosphere of the traditional restaurant was still evident from the moment we entered. We arrived 10 minutes early for our 9 o'clock meal and were guided to our room after a brief wait in the waiting area. The "Quail Porridge" meal cost 5,445 yen and included a plate assortment, a dish of white miso soup with taro sprouts and Kyoto-style wheat gluten, and the main dish of quail porridge paired with pickles. The presentation of each dish was exquisite, and the small taro sprouts in the soup reminded me of the arrival of spring. The main dish of quail porridge, with its delicate flavor from the quail broth, was both elegant and satisfying. It was truly delicious, thank you for the wonderful meal.

Hyou-tei in Kakegawa is famous for its morning porridge. This was my second visit to Hyou-tei, and this time I tried their annex for the first time, as well as their morning porridge. It has the atmosphere of a traditional inn or high-class restaurant, with the female staff welcoming you in kimonos, creating a warm and hospitable environment. Even though I wasn't staying overnight, I could still enjoy the luxurious atmosphere from the morning. After being served tea, they handed me a drink menu with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. It felt like a beer-drinking atmosphere, so I ordered a beer, as did many of the other customers. The morning meal at Hyou-tei is low-calorie, with a refined taste that highlights the ingredients. Surprisingly, the flavors also pair well with alcohol. For example, the wasabi-flavored komatsuna salad went perfectly with the beer. The dishes are seasoned with a rich broth, making them delicious even with a light touch, typical of Kansai cuisine. The white miso soup had a sweet aroma of amazake, and the quail porridge had a gentle flavor that was very tasty. I look forward to trying the morning porridge at the main building in summer and perhaps even buying some souvenirs next time. It was a delightful experience.

I visited the restaurant about a month ago after making a reservation over the phone for a weekday at 10 am. They had slots available at 8 am, 9 am, and 10 am, and the staff mentioned that we would finish eating within an hour. We were one of two groups who had reserved the 10 am slot that day. The quail rice porridge had a fantastic flavor, and the white miso soup was delicious as well. I would love to visit again for dinner sometime, especially since there is a Times parking lot nearby that we could use.

National travel support had ended, but I arrived in Kyoto the night before and came here in the morning to have breakfast porridge. The main building does not serve breakfast porridge at this time of year, so I visited the annex. If my memory serves me right, this place was featured as the ultimate porridge in the manga "Oishinbo." The atmosphere is very pleasant, allowing you to enjoy a luxurious time from the morning. As someone still inexperienced, I may not fully appreciate the goodness of porridge, but rather feel it gradually becoming more familiar to my body. The breakfast porridge costs 4,840 yen and includes plum kelp soup, pressed sushi of sea bream, boiled egg, taro shoot tempura, chestnut, and pickles. There is also grilled cod marinated in sweet miso, eel, tofu skin, radish, and green beans. Additionally, there is a vinegar dish with chrysanthemum, shiitake mushroom, and leafy greens, as well as tofu hot pot with seaweed, porridge with bonito sauce, and pickles with dried baby sardines, pickled daikon, and kelp. It is a gentle dish for the body. After this, I went to Heian Shrine to get a limited edition stamp for the Jidai Matsuri (Festival of Ages).

I couldn't make a reservation for morning porridge at the main Hōtei branch, so I made a reservation at this annex. I reserved a taxi from Hotel Okura Kyoto and arrived before 8 o'clock. Upon entering, I was guided to my seat. It's a small but well-maintained seat with a view of the garden. I received a hot towel and plum kelp tea. It's nice to start breakfast with tea containing pickled plum. After a while, a tray with a three-tiered gourd-shaped container and a plate with Hōtei tamago and other items was brought to me. I open each tier of the container and enjoy the food. Everything I ate had delicate flavors and was delicious. Of course, the famous Hōtei tamago was delicious, with a smooth texture. I also had some tofu in a hot pot, and it seems like the grilled ayu fish I ordered as an extra is ready. It was cooked slowly over charcoal, and it seemed like you could eat it in one bite, very delicious (I didn't eat it though ^^;). Finally, the porridge was brought to me. It was filled with plenty of ingredients, and I poured the broth over it in a bowl and enjoyed it. It was delicious. The pickles were also delicious, and I enjoyed the porridge. I was a bit skeptical about morning porridge, but it was quite satisfying with a good amount. I would like to try it at the main branch next summer. Thank you for the meal.

I came to try the morning porridge that I've always wanted to eat after hearing about it in a manga. Each dish was simple but delicately made and delicious. The portions were quite generous, so it can easily double as lunch. The topping on the morning porridge was really delicious.

I went to try the very famous morning porridge. I called a few days ago and even some days were fully booked... It seems to be very popular. I was looking forward to it, but I didn't quite see it as a Michelin-starred breakfast. It felt more like eating a delicious bento from a high-class restaurant. Even the final porridge didn't have that special feeling. Despite this, the popularity... I couldn't figure out the secret behind it.

I visited a long-established traditional restaurant called Hyotei near Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto, which has been operating since the Edo period. I made a reservation in advance and was smoothly guided to my table at the scheduled time. The seating was at a table facing a beautiful courtyard bathed in the morning sun. I ordered their famous morning rice porridge. The porridge was served with a refreshing plum broth. The contents of the porridge vary depending on the season. The cute gourd-shaped container had three tiers, containing mugwort gluten, white fish with mozuku seaweed, eel with vinegar, and other delicacies. The eel with vinegar dish included items like tofu skin, fuki (butterbur) stalks, and millet gluten, complementing the delicious eel. On a square plate, there was a seasoned soft-boiled egg, rolled omelette with green soybeans, tenderstem mustard greens, pressed sushi, and crispy young ayu fish tempura. The soft-boiled egg was a specialty and had a sweet and creamy yolk. The rolled omelette had a refreshing flavor from the green soybeans. The tenderstem mustard greens were deliciously crunchy. The pressed sushi had a hint of Sansho pepper adding a nice kick. The crispy young ayu fish tempura had a mature flavor that paired well with the bitterness. The miso soup included tofu and plenty of seaweed, adding a nice aroma. The main dish, rice porridge, was served in a container, and you transfer it to a bowl to eat. Pouring the thick, flavorful broth over the porridge enhances its richness. The rice itself had a gentle sweetness and was delicious on its own. The pickles included cucumber, kombu seaweed, and pickled daikon, all of which were tasty. It was a perfect experience to enjoy a luxurious breakfast.

I finally had the morning porridge set meal at Hyotei Bekkan, which I had been curious about for a while. Before the porridge, there were four small dishes like appetizers. The dishes were served in cute bowls. Then, a clear soup with tofu and seaweed was served, followed by the main porridge dish. The porridge was eaten by pouring the broth over it. The broth was thick and very delicious.

Next to the famous restaurant Mujin-an is another establishment called Hyotei, where you can enjoy a special morning porridge. I had always admired this morning porridge and finally made a reservation to try it out with a friend during our visit to Kyoto. Despite calling three weeks in advance, we could only secure a reservation for the 10 am slot as the earlier times were fully booked. We were served plum and kelp tea while waiting, overlooking the beautiful garden. Soon, a three-tiered tray with dishes like Hyotei-style egg, sushi with sea bream wrapped in cherry leaves, and spring simmered dishes was brought to our table. The dishes were filled with the fresh scent of spring, with ingredients like young sansho leaves adding a delightful flavor. Following this, we were served a simple yet flavorful soup with tofu and seaweed. Finally, the highlight of the meal was the freshly cooked porridge, served hot and topped with a flavorful broth. The porridge, carefully cooked from quality rice, warmed us up on a chilly day despite the cherry blossoms being in full bloom. It was a fulfilling experience trying out the morning porridge at Hyotei, and I hope to visit again in a different season.

My mother, who is currently in Kyoto, sends regular updates. She walks about 20,000 steps every day on this energetic trip for a week. The cherry blossoms are already beautiful there (*´∀`*) She was surprised that the morning porridge cost 4,800 yen, but it was enjoyable because there were many varieties. As for the tofu soup, well, it's made with tofu, so it must be bland, right? www Today, she is off on another energetic 20,000 steps! That's all from the scene! ヾ(・ω・*)ノ

I visited the annex this time because I didn't want ayu last time haha. I wanted to go to the main building this time, but it seems that the main building is not open until summer... so once again, I used the annex. Even though it's the annex, reservations are required so please be aware. We entered the restaurant at the reserved time. Just like last time, I had morning porridge, but unfortunately, I think the previous one was tastier with the side dishes. I hope to try it at the main building in the summer next time.

I went to the Takarazuka Grand Theater with my daughter, who I call "Weekend Daughter." It was a pilgrimage to a sacred place for both of us, as we had always wanted to visit. Afterwards, we had lunch at Hyotei in Kyoto, near the theater. This restaurant, although a separate building, offers the same high-quality dishes as the main branch. We enjoyed the Matsukado bento lunch for 6,000 yen, which included delicious dishes like fresh sea bream sashimi and the famous Hyotei Tamago. The clam soup was particularly impressive, with a rich and flavorful broth. Every dish we tried, from steamed sushi to roast duck, was meticulously prepared and incredibly delicious. My daughter was amazed by the flavors and quality of the Japanese cuisine. We felt satisfied and happy with our dining experience at Hyotei, and we look forward to returning with my husband next time.

The morning porridge at Hyou-tei, a dream for the Oishinbo generation. The eight-piece set includes the famous Hyou-tei tamago. The perfectly cooked eggs and gentle flavor were just as expected. The charming gourd-shaped dish also came with side dishes like seasoned vegetables and pickles, all with elegant seasoning. The seasonal porridge featured quail, which, as time passed, combined with the porridge and became a delicious, sticky texture. It was a delightful breakfast that warmed both body and soul on a winter morning.

There is nothing to complain about. If there is a best breakfast in Japan, it is here. It used to be the main store a long time ago, but now it's nice to have a separate building with table seats. The menu changes somewhat depending on the season, but I didn't know it would be this different. The porridge is delicious. The egg is still the same tasty flavor.
