March 2022. First Visit. After having ramen in Obihiro, we decided to have dessert as well. Following a recommendation from MyRebi, we visited a place we had never heard of before, "Takahashi Manju-ya". It is said that the speed skater Nana Takagi used to work here in the past, and her sister, Miho Takagi, also worked here occasionally as her sister's assistant. Despite the excitement of the Beijing Olympics still lingering, we decided to stop by. Even on a weekday, the place was crowded, showing its popularity. We bought a large manju (red bean paste and cheese) and soft-serve ice cream. Surprisingly, the soft-serve ice cream was only 200 yen, a rare find these days. The ice cream was slightly firm, leaning towards a condensed milk-like sweetness rather than a milk sweetness. It was a unique taste that we had never experienced before, but for 200 yen, it was not bad at all. Towards the end, we attempted the classic technique of creating a vacuum suction from the bottom of the cone, but due to the firm texture of the ice cream, it took a bit of effort. However, we were able to fully enjoy the harmony between the cone and the ice cream until the last bite. We reheated the large manju at home the next day. The red bean paste was chunky and not strained, but the sweet dough on the surface was delicious, despite feeling slightly overcooked. As for the cheese flavor, it tasted purely like cheese and honestly did not seem to match well with the dough. After purchasing it at the store, we saw a poster of Miho Takagi, so we shared some soft-serve ice cream as a reward for her gold medal, making it a memorable experience (laughs).
