Winter Kyoto Food Log Trip Part 4: After crossing the Sanjo Ohashi Bridge over the Kamo River and walking to the right along the Takase River, I came across the famous traditional Japanese sweets shop "Honke Tsukimochiya Naoshou." Established in 1804, this renowned shop is known for its most popular item, the "Warabi Mochi," which often sells out by lunchtime. So, I made a reservation for it before heading to lunch, planning to pick it up just before returning to Osaka. Upon revisiting the shop after 3 pm, I purchased the following items to take back to Osaka: Warabi Mochi (6 pieces for 1690 yen), Kanoko and Kanoko with Gold Kumquat (270 yen each), Kyoto Kanoko with Chestnut (260 yen), Uguisu Kanoko with Chestnut (260 yen), Chestnut Kanoko (430 yen), and Edo Kanoko with Chestnut Grain (290 yen). Pre-ordering was a great decision, as the Warabi Mochi was indeed sold out when I went to pick up my order. Since they don't last long, I enjoyed these treats with hot oolong tea after dinner with my friends. The Warabi Mochi, made from real warabi flour dough filled with plenty of sweet bean paste and dusted with fragrant kinako powder, had a fluffy and soft texture that was truly exquisite. The fine and moist sweet bean paste inside was elegant and delicious, explaining why it sells out quickly. The "Kanoko," also known as "wet sweetened beans," is characterized by its mild sweetness and soft texture compared to regular sweetened beans, making a colorful and beautiful display with the 5 varieties I purchased. The "Tora Kanoko" and "Uguisu Kanoko" that I bought 7 years ago were still delicious. The Tora Kanoko features sweetened tiger beans surrounded by white bean paste, topped with gold kumquat, making it a cute and tasty wagashi. The Uguisu Kanoko includes sweetened green peas wrapped in white bean paste and topped with candied chestnuts. Bon appétit!

【Location】3 minutes walk from Sanjo Station on the Keihan Main Line 【Order】Baked sweets - Awamochi I purchased baked sweets and awamochi as souvenirs. The bite-sized baked sweets were small and cute, with a smooth red bean paste inside, making them a perfect accompaniment for tea time. The popular warabi mochi requires a reservation and can only be picked up in the afternoon, so I had to give up on it this time. I would like to challenge the warabi mochi next time. Thank you for the delicious treats.

I visited on Saturday morning. There were no other customers. I was worried about carrying it around, so I got the awamochi to go. When I chewed it, it melted in my mouth and the sweetness spread, it was delicious. They wrapped it up after I ordered it, so I waited on a chair inside the store. The awamochi was delicious, but next time I want to try the warabimochi.

I used takeout service. I went there specifically for their warabi mochi, but it seems they run out of it in the morning, as it was already sold out around 2 pm. It was disappointing, but I bought tsuki mochi instead. When I tried it, it had a simple yet elegant taste and was delicious! The filling was smooth red bean paste, and the mild sweetness was just right. I would like to visit again at a different time.

When you visit Kyoto, be sure to try the warabi mochi that impressed me so much. I recommend making a reservation in advance as you can always buy it if you reserve it. The texture is unlike anything I've experienced before, incredibly soft, with a perfect balance of sweet bean paste. The elegant sweetness spreads in your mouth the moment you take a bite. Even if you're not a fan of sweet treats, I think you'll enjoy it. I definitely want to buy it again when I go to Kyoto.

I visited Honkotsu Tsukimochiya for the first time. I bought the warabi mochi, which has sweet red bean paste inside. The warabi mochi is soft, with a perfect balance of kinako powder, saltiness, and the sweetness of the red bean paste. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I visited in the early afternoon and bought some warabi mochi, but it was so delicious that it was eaten before I could take a picture. This warabi mochi had sweet red bean paste inside, making it very soft and tasty. It was a unique and delicious treat. I also recommend trying their "kanoko" sweets. Overall, this is a highly recommended traditional Japanese sweets shop in Kyoto. It was a delightful experience. Thank you for the meal.

I feel like I've passed by this place a few times before, but it's hard to notice because the surroundings are stylish and the shop signs are overhead. It's at the corner of a winding road. For now, I decided to try the following two items. They will take your order and then pack it in a gift box for you. The "Kyoto Kanoko" (chestnut) for 260 yen: The surface is sparkling sweet and visually appealing, with a nice combination of chestnut sweetness and the crunchiness of the beans. The "Warabi Mochi" with 3 pieces for 870 yen: The black warabi mochi is filled with black bean paste when you set aside the soybean flour. Each piece is quite large, so having three is quite a portion for one person. However, the soybean flour doesn't stick to your mouth, and the bean paste is not overly sweet, with a chewy texture. I could really feel the difference in quality even with warabi mochi. Thank you for the meal.

I visited the shop during the daytime on a regular day. I read that their popular warabi mochi is better to be reserved in advance, so I made a reservation by phone a week ago before visiting. The shop is located near Sanjo Keihan and has been a popular traditional Japanese sweets shop for over 200 years. This time, I purchased "3 pieces of warabi mochi for 870 yen." Just so you know, 3 pieces is the minimum quantity you can buy. The warabi mochi is wrapped with sweet bean paste and topped with kinako (soybean flour). It's similar to the style of "Ikkoan" in Tokyo. The warabi mochi has a thin but pleasant texture, with a strong fragrance of warabi powder. The sweetness of the sweet bean paste and kinako is subtle, giving an elegant taste overall. The expiration date is 2 days. It was a refined warabi mochi that can be enjoyed in any quantity. Since it's easily accessible from Sanjo Keihan, I would like to purchase it again. Thank you for the meal!

Good evening. I am a beauty acupuncturist, Kozue. The other day, when I went to Kyoto, I visited a traditional Japanese confectionery shop called Honke Tsukimono Naosei, which is one of the top 100 sweets shops in the west. I saw a review on Tabelog praising their wasabi mochi, so this time I bought their warabi mochi. The smallest size available was a set of 3, so I purchased the 3-piece warabi mochi. Each piece was quite large, with smooth red bean paste inside. The red bean paste was very smooth and melted in the mouth. The warabi mochi itself was very soft, and the balance of flavors with the kinako powder sprinkled on top was excellent. I thought it was a rather unusual warabi mochi. It was very delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I used to go to a shop every week a long time ago, where the daughter of the shop owner attended a high school in the city and couldn't commute from our house, so she stayed in a dormitory. She would come home only on weekends, so I would stop by here to buy warabi mochi before going to pick her up, which was always a delight. It served as a treat for customers, and I became acquainted with the owner, often sitting at the table in the shop, enjoying tea and sweets. I felt like having it again after a long time – warabi mochi, chestnut kanten, and shiso mochi. Warabi mochi is served with roasted green tea, while chestnut kanten is paired with hana tea. Hana tea refers to the first-picked young buds of new tea leaves, known for its refreshing aroma and light blue hue. The texture of warabi mochi is irresistibly soft and stretchy, creating a unique sensation. Chestnut kanten has a peachy pink interior, reminiscent of a peach blossom split open – not too sweet, but incredibly delicious. Shiso mochi features a vibrant purple outer layer made with pickled red shiso leaves, wrapping around a perfect balance of saltiness and sweetness in the mochi and red bean paste filling. Although they are small in size, they are reasonably priced, which is a bonus. Warabi mochi is sold in packs of three because it tends to lose its shape easily, fitting perfectly in the smallest box available at the shop.

A quiet place to enjoy Warabimochi (available to order in sets of 3). First, the fragrant aroma of kinako powder fills the air. The texture of the mochi is not too soft, with a subtle graininess. Encased within is a smooth and finely textured sweet red bean paste that is satisfying in just one bite. The kinako powder sprinkled on top adds a lingering aroma and completes the experience. This Warabimochi offers a simple yet rich and flavorful taste.

The Aoi Festival was postponed to the next day due to rain. I was on the bus in the morning, not suspecting anything because even though it was drizzling, the sky was bright. I found out about the postponement through online news. I got off at Higashiyama Sanjo and took a stroll down Kawaramachi for the first time in years. I headed straight to this place. I had made a reservation for pick up at 1:00 PM and went for a leisurely walk. I purchased four mooncakes on time. I chilled them a bit at home before trying them. I usually prefer red bean paste, but the smooth red bean paste here is exceptional. It had been a while since I had them, but they were still delicious. Let's look forward to enjoying the Aoi Festival tomorrow!

I have been to Kyoto many times before, but I wonder why I never visited this shop until now... Maybe it was a good thing that I discovered it at this timing. In any case, the warabi mochi here was fantastic. It was soft, sticky yet had a good mouthfeel, and melted in my mouth. The sweetness was mild, allowing the true flavor of the red bean paste to shine through. I could eat as many as I wanted. I will definitely visit again.

I visited the restaurant on a holiday for lunch. I wanted to buy "warabimochi," but they said I needed to make a reservation and come back later, so I decided to get the other item I was interested in, "kanoko." I chose three types: "torakanoko," "kyo kanoko," and "uguisukanoko." When I got home and tried them, they were all delicious. They had a refined sweetness. I will definitely be coming back for more. Next time, I will also get the warabimochi. It was all very delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Visited the original "Tsukimiyake Nao" in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City. It is located just a short walk from Sanjo Station on the Keihan Main Line, across Sanjo Ohashi and turning right just before the Takase River. Arriving at 4:30 pm on a Saturday, the warabi mochi and awa mochi were already sold out, but it seems that if you make a reservation in advance, you can still purchase them in the evening. On this day, I bought two "Sakura Mochi" for 270 yen each, "Himuro" for 260 yen, and "Kyoto Kanoko" for 260 yen. - Sakura Mochi: The saltiness soaked in the cherry blossom leaves is very strong, and it goes perfectly with the texture of the mochi and the refreshing sweetness of the sweet red bean paste. - Himuro: A cold agar yokan that feels like solidified shiratamako flour. The maple leaf shape is quite cute. - Kyoto Kanoko: Pink-colored white bean paste topped with white flower beans stacked with candied chestnuts. Thank you for the delicious meal!

I have visited this place several times. They specialize in warabi mochi. The texture and taste can vary depending on when you buy it, not just when you eat it. It is a delicate food, so it's understandable. When the timing is right, it is definitely worth it.

I made a reservation for some delicious warabi mochi for a gathering with friends during cherry blossom viewing by the Kamogawa River. The mochi was thin with a generous amount of sweet red bean paste inside. I reserved it a few days in advance and picked it up at 12:30 as requested. My friends were surprised by the unique texture of the mochi and loved the taste of the red bean paste. It was worth going out of my way to buy it in Sanjo. If you're in the area during this season, I also recommend trying the sakura mochi.

I arrived around 11:30 and unfortunately had to give up on getting the warabi mochi as the pick-up time was after 14:30. I ended up getting sakura mochi, Kyoto kanoko, and minazuki to go. There were only 2 sakura mochi left and the oboro was already sold out. It's definitely a popular shop. The sakura mochi was surprisingly amazing, with the flavor and aroma of cherry blossoms, the sweetness of the red bean paste, and the texture of the mochi all being superb. The Kyoto kanoko also had a wonderful flavor and perfect level of sweetness. These were truly top-level traditional Japanese sweets. Thank you very much for the delicious treats.

The night before my trip to Kyoto during cherry blossom season, I stayed in Kyoto after watching a play in Umeda. The next morning, I visited a temple for an early special viewing and then took a boat ride on the Okazaki Jikkishu. On my way to a restaurant in Sanjo where I had lunch reservations, I came across a small traditional Japanese sweets shop. It was called "Honke Tsukimiyake Naoshou." I had seen it in a Kyoto feature magazine before. From outside, I could see the delicious "kanoko" sweets lined up. I bought two types of Daifuku and four types of kanoko as souvenirs. The warabi mochi was sold out, but they said it would be available at 2:30 pm. Unfortunately, I had other plans and couldn't wait. I learned that if I had made a reservation in advance, I could have secured my purchase. When I got home at 10 pm, I shared the sweets with my family. Both the Daifuku and kanoko had a gentle sweetness and were very elegant. In particular, the "torakanoko" (the kanoko on the far left) had a refreshing aroma of kumquat that floated before putting it in my mouth, and the gentle sweetness paired perfectly with it. It was a delightful encounter with a very famous traditional Japanese sweets shop. This is also part of the joy of traveling. I will definitely make a reservation before my next visit.
