One of the shops I wanted to visit when I came to Kyoto. It is Japan's first Japanese-owned Western confectionery store established in 1874!! Their cookies are famous, and you need to make a reservation to purchase them, but for their Russian cakes, you can buy them without a reservation, and you can even buy just one. When you open the door, the atmosphere is different! It's very calm, and you feel like you're being enveloped by the ambiance, but it's not stiff, and the staff provides polite and kind service, making me relax immediately. Please take your time to look around. They also talked to me about various things afterward. Truly a traditional store's hospitality. I ended up buying three Russian cakes after hesitating. Each one costs 190 yen (excluding tax), which is more reasonable than I thought it would be.
- Yuzu Jam Sandwich
- Apricot Jam
- Raisin
I thought they would be crispy, but the Russian cakes have a moist texture that melts in your mouth. The apricot jam has a slightly sticky feel to it. It was a bit oily, but overall, all the jams have a gentle and pleasant fragrance. It's very elegant. This must be the taste of a long-established store. I planned to eat them slowly, but ended up finishing them all at once. It's addictive. But I think I prefer crispy ones. Thank you for the meal.

I visited on Saturday morning. There were about 3 other groups of customers. The cafe was under construction, so I got 4 types of Russian cookies to go. I also got 2 types of sandwiches with sauce that the staff recommended. The cookies were moist and paired well with jam, very delicious. I would like to try using the cafe when it reopens.

I bought a Russian cake. It has a simple taste and is delicious. It's my favorite type of cookie. I also ordered a tin of cookies to take home. They said it will arrive in a year and a half. I was able to buy Teramachi pudding. It was creamy and delicious! I would love to visit again when I go to Kyoto. The staff was also very kind.

[Location] 5 minutes walk from Kyoto City Hall by city bus [Order] Russian cakes, various baked goods I purchased Russian cakes and various baked goods as souvenirs. The tea time conversation was lively, and I forgot to take a photo. I will visit again. The cookies still have a waiting list of 1 year for reservations.

Most guidebooks feature this place and it's popular among locals and tourists alike! The most popular cookie tin seems to have a wait of over a year now... On a holiday around 10 am, there were 2 groups of customers ahead of me. The wrapping takes time and the place is always busy, so make sure to visit with plenty of time to spare. [Items purchased] Teramachi Vanilla Pudding ¥480 Orange Jelly ¥630 Russian Cake (box) ¥2380 I always visit a few times during my stay in Kyoto, but I never got to see the pudding and jelly (;_;) This time, I was determined to buy them!! I arrived at the opening time with great anticipation. Finally, I got to see them... my persistence paid off... The staff mentioned that it might be possible to reserve by phone on the same day. The number of items made varies each day, so they cannot guarantee reservations. I'm glad I came with such determination. It was so delicious...! I love the cookie tin and Russian cake, but personally, I was more impressed by the pudding and jelly. Therefore, I have revised my rating upwards. The only thing to note is that the expiration date is short. The pudding is until the next day, and the jelly is until the day after. Tourists should be aware of this. Kyoto's long-established shops are truly amazing. I will definitely visit again. Thank you for the meal (*´ω`*)

I received a box of Russian cakes and wanted to try my favorite flavor again, so I visited the shop. The old-fashioned building, dimly lit interior, and carefully selected products gave off a charming Kyoto vibe. I ended up buying too much because everything looked so appealing. The cakes had a subtle sweetness and were delicious. It seems different from the shop with the same name in Tokyo, as mentioned online. The atmosphere here is unique and you won't find it anywhere else. It's definitely Kyoto. I'll be back again. The location is a 3-minute walk north from Kyoto City Hall.

Russian cake (chocolate), Russian cake (yuzu jam), Dacquoise, and Madeleine. When I visited Kyoto, I went to this famous cookie tin shop. I heard that there is usually a wait of about six months to buy the cookies in the tin. The cookies inside the tin cannot be bought at the store, so I hope to buy them someday. There are several types of Russian cakes, and this time I chose chocolate and yuzu jam. The slightly soft dough with a buttery flavor was very delicious. Dacquoise is a caramel sauce sandwiched snack with a crispy texture. It has a slightly adult taste, which is nice. Madeleine is consistently delicious. It's plain, but has a bit of sweetness and a moist dough, which is great. Since there are various types available, I want to try different ones next time.

-Russian Cake Raisin 190 yen
A Russian cake with sugar-coated cherries and raisins. I was curious about what a Russian cake is like, but it's a bit soft with a simple cookie-like texture and tastes delicious.
-Russian Cake Yuzu Jam Sandwich 190 yen
The refreshing taste of yuzu jam is delicious. I think it's the same dough as the raisin one, but I prefer the sandwich. Among the ones I tried, this is my favorite!
-Russian Cake Apricot Jam 190 yen
The sticky jam is tasty.
-Russian Cake Grape Jam Sandwich 190 yen
Sweeter than the yuzu jam sandwich.
-Galette Bretonne 250 yen
A crispy Galette Bretonne with a dry texture, which was just right for me as I don't like oily foods. It has a mild saltiness and a nice touch of spiciness from the black pepper.
-Florentine 250 yen
Similar to the Galette Bretonne, not too greasy which was great. The light cookie at the bottom is delicious, and the honey-flavored almond nougat is also tasty. I should have bought two of these.

It's been a while, or rather, last year when I went to buy, I was told there was a one-year wait, so I forgot about it and it arrived when I least expected it, a cookie tin from Murakami Kaishindo. The cookies are simple, gentle, moist but delicate, and I love the subtle deliciousness. I cherish them and enjoy them slowly, a grown-up cookie that is incredibly delicious. It's understandable why it's so popular, with a wait time of 3 months turning into 1 year. If you feel like eating more after having some, it might be just the right timing to reserve and come back in a year. It's a great recommendation for important occasions or for important people, a well-established confectionery shop with delicious baked goods and eat-in sweets as well. Thank you for the feast!

Before returning home, I visited Murakami Kaishindo to buy souvenirs. The retro and lovely building caught my eye! Inside the store, there were many baked sweets in the showcase, making it hard to choose. Considering the heat and travel time back home, I decided to buy an assortment of baked sweets - madeleines, dacquoises, galettes, and florentines. They were all delicious, and my family enjoyed them as well. If I have the chance, I would like to try their café as well. Thank you for the delicious treats!

I visited during the day on a weekday. I arrived a little after 1 pm and there was only one other customer. This is a long-established Western confectionery shop with over 100 years of history. This time, I purchased two items. Both have a shelf life of about 2 weeks.
<Galette 270 yen> It has a strong aroma of butter and a solid salty taste. It also has black pepper on the surface, giving it an impact. However, because it has a strong presence, I personally felt it might be a bit overwhelming.
<Russian Cake 205 yen> The butter flavor comes through the dough, which has a crispy and fluffy texture. I chose the grape jam sandwich flavor, but the jam's presence is subtle. It was a classic and charming baked confection. In these times, offering good quality at a low price is a significant feature. Thank you for the meal.

It's been a while since I visited Murakami Kaisindo. The eat-in area is currently closed for renovation. I bought three baked goods to take out. They were consistently delicious. I would like to come back to Kyoto and enjoy a cake slowly in the eat-in area next time.

I stopped by after visiting the Okane Shrine. The building is very retro with cute tile floors. I ordered a popular small cookie tin. The varieties are the same for both large and small tins. Currently (early June 2023), the pick-up date is scheduled for early July next year (surprising)! Payment can be made at that time. Today, I purchased Florentine and Galette Bretonne. The expiration date is about 2 weeks. The Florentine is not sticky, but crunchy. The Galette Bretonne has black pepper visible on the surface. Both have a simple taste focusing on the ingredients. I'm sure the cookies will be crispy like the ones at Kaishindo in Tokyo. Looking forward to it! Thank you for the meal! I will work hard for this year looking forward to enjoying the cookie tin (laughs)!

The shop is located in a great location, just 5 minutes from Kyoto City Hall Station. It seems to be popular for its cookies, which many people buy as souvenirs. One good thing about this shop is that you can buy just one item if you want, making it easy to try something new. I ordered the Russian Cake (chocolate) for 205 yen and the Madeleine for 205 yen. The Madeleine had a crispy, dry flavor that was delicious, especially when paired with coffee. It had a moist sweetness that melted in your mouth. It's a tasty treat that's perfect for a snack.

Today I bought a madeleine. You can purchase it individually. It is delicious, with a buttery almond flavor and a gentle sweetness of honey. It also contains rum. The texture is moist and has a fine, delicate crumb.

・Kyoto City Nakagyo-ku [Murakami Kaishindo] A legendary cookie that everyone in Kyoto knows about. The long-established "Murakami Kaishindo" is a Western confectionery shop founded in 1874. Over 140 years, each generation of owners has put in various ideas and efforts, sticking to handmade creations. Some items, like the cookie tin, are so popular that they are hard to come by. For souvenirs, try the Russian cake! I bought Apricot Yuzu Jam Sandwich, Raisin Grape Jam Sandwich, Chocolate Madeleine, and Duck Wafers to take home! Next time, I want to try the hard-to-find cookie tin!

I came here in search of delicious Florentines! I took a leisurely walk from Demachiyanagi Station. The store exudes a sense of tradition from its appearance. However, with so many customers, it was hard to see the showcase, and the visible showcase only had "Russian cakes". When I asked the staff if they had Florentines, they kindly replied, "Yes, we do!" So, without checking the price, I ordered 4 pieces! Each was 270 yen, tax included. I can't wait to enjoy them at home. I hope they are to my liking. When I finally tasted them, I thought, "Yes, this is it." I had been searching for my favorite Florentines in Tokyo but couldn't find them in Osaka or Kobe. I was relieved to discover them in Kyoto! My favorite kind of Florentines - not too chewy, no berries, just a classic Florentine. I can easily make a trip here to buy more! I will try the Russian cakes (cookies) next time! Thank you, Murakami Kaishindo!

One of the purposes of my recent trip to Kyoto was to go pick up a cookie assortment from Murakami Kaisindo. The retro building-like, nostalgic, and gentle taste. I open the can and hesitate a bit on which one to have, then place them on a plate. I am happy that I can enjoy them with tea at home for a while. Thank you for the meal.

After visiting Granvannyu, I was hesitant to visit another place as it would be too much, so I decided to go there. Although the sign was a bit hard to read, I could tell it was a retro building, indicating a traditional Western confectionery shop. The eat-in area was under construction, so I bought three Russian cakes to go. After trying them, I felt like having some tea. Although I only visited one traditional Japanese confectionery shop on this trip, I was satisfied with my food adventure. I am planning to visit again around summer. And so, I left Kyoto.

The Russian cake, which has been loved for a long time, has a nostalgic and comforting taste. It is just the right amount of sweet and firm, and very delicious. It is also good value for money, and makes a great souvenir that will be appreciated. The staff is friendly, making it a place you will want to visit again and again.
