Located near the Katsura River in Minami Ward, Kyoto City, this restaurant is a bit hard to find as it is situated in a residential area. This was my first visit here, and I enjoyed the following dishes: - Carrot mousse with crab meat - Sliced raw crab on top of sliced squid - Prawn head - Sweet shrimp - Anago (saltwater eel) - Matsutake mushroom - Sweet potato tempura (for me) - Tempura tea (for my wife) - Red miso soup - Black sugar sherbet Overall, the food was delicious, especially the freshly fried tempura at the counter. The restaurant was clean and the service was excellent. There is a private parking lot next to the restaurant. The prices are reasonable, making it a great place for family gatherings or business meals. I would definitely consider visiting again. I would rate this restaurant 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a shop along the Katsura River, a little far from Kyoto Station. It used to be a fishing net owner for river fish. Everything was really delicious. Especially the sea bream, asparagus, and stuffed shrimp were outstanding. I used it for my wife's birthday! I was recommended to sit at the counter where I could watch the food being fried. The atmosphere was great, all the dishes were delicious, and the owner and staff were all very nice, so I had a wonderful time! Every tempura dish was so delicious that I couldn't decide which one was the best. Thank you for turning the sashimi into grilled fish for me!

The other day, we visited this restaurant to celebrate a family birthday with a luxurious meal. It is located away from the hustle and bustle of Kyoto city, by the Katsura River. The tatami rooms with sunken kotatsu tables provide a calm atmosphere to enjoy your meal ☺️ With an air of luxury, it is suitable for business meetings, family gatherings, and other special occasions. We visited during dinner time and ordered the 7,000 yen course meal "Mai" (^^) Starting with the appetizer of chilled eggplant jelly (1st photo), followed by bonito & sea bream sashimi (2nd photo), and then the main dish! Tempura of seasonal Kyoto vegetables and fish (3rd-6th, 8th photos) was served. In the middle of the tempura course, a salad (7th photo) was served as a palate cleanser. The tempura had a light and crispy batter, making it easy to enjoy. After finishing the meal, we were satisfied and delighted. For the finale, you can choose between kakiage tendon, kakiage tea, or kakiage zaru (9th photo, I chose kakiage tendon). Lastly, homemade sherbet was served, leaving us completely satisfied. I look forward to visiting this restaurant again for any future special occasions ✌️ *Please note that the course menu may vary depending on the season.

I made a reservation and ordered the 3500 yen course meal. The parking is available but in a line, so depending on the timing, I may need to move my car during the meal. The appetizer was a jellied egg with fried whitebait, and a clear broth. It had a refined taste and was delicious. The sashimi was bonito tataki. The tempura consisted of 2 prawns, broccoli, firefly squid, spring onion, shiitake mushroom, and beltfish, all fried with a light batter and served hot, making them all delicious. The salad had deep-fried sweet potatoes with plum dressing. After the tempura, I had a mixed tempura rice bowl, and I also ordered some additional items: asparagus (770 yen), fava beans (330 yen), red snapper with shiso leaf (660 yen), and prawns other than the ones in the course (770 yen). The asparagus was from Ehime, juicy in the middle but a bit thick, making it a little difficult to chew, but it was delicious. The prawns were firm and had a slightly stronger flavor than the ones in the course. I chose the red snapper with shiso leaf over plain red snapper. All the items were on the pricier side when ordered individually compared to the course price. The final mixed tempura rice bowl had a thicker batter than the other tempura, which bothered me a bit. The tempura had a strong sweetness from the onions, and the sauce was also sweet, matching well and tasting delicious. Although ordering additional items individually was a bit pricey, I felt that the course meal was reasonably priced. It was a great experience to be able to enjoy freshly fried tempura.

I used a 4500 yen lunch course for my birthday celebration. The sashimi was seared and had a rich flavor, very delicious. The tempura consisted of 9 freshly fried items, all of them were excellent. The grated daikon radish was fluffy and there was a generous amount, so I enjoyed it to the fullest. The tempura rice bowl was also included, very filling. The sherbet at the end was refreshing. It was extremely delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Family trip to Kyoto Day 1. Upon arriving in Kyoto by Shinkansen, we immediately transferred to the Kyoto Line and headed to Katsura Station. We took a taxi and arrived in about 5 minutes. The restaurant is located in a corner of a residential area. We enjoyed a leisurely tempura course in a private room. The dishes had delicate Kyoto-style seasoning. The tempura fish was cooked perfectly and delicious. We all enjoyed the meal together. Thank you for the feast. Due to the location or the season, it took over 30 minutes for the taxi to arrive on the way back. It's a tourist season, so it's better to have extra time for peace of mind.

Reservation made through Tabelog net reservation 18 days in advance. Ordered: Ma Course 6,300 yen x 2, Appetizer, Sashimi Platter (swordfish, bonito), Tempura Assortment 10 items (shrimp, ginkgo nut, locally sourced whole smelt, megochi, eggplant, broccoli, fugu shirako, maitake mushroom, anago, sweet potato), Special Salad, Ending Dish (small tempura rice bowl, small tempura tea), Homemade Sherbet (brown sugar, sweet potato). The evening course was reasonably priced, and the option for net reservations made it a convenient choice. However, upon arrival, the restaurant seemed quite upscale and intimidating. We unknowingly parked at a distant coin parking lot as the restaurant's adjacent parking lot was not known to us. Upon entering, we were greeted by a very kind and polite female staff member who guided us to what seemed like premium seats reserved through the net reservation - the counter seats. The interior was impressive with shiny copper frying equipment and decorative knives. The L-shaped seating at the counter was quite nerve-wracking. The appetizer had a strong vinegar taste that overshadowed the original flavors of the ingredients. The sashimi with salted swordfish was a unique and enjoyable dish. The tempura was exceptionally delicious, showcasing authentic tempura flavors. The special salad had a strong acidity in the dressing, making it a bit underwhelming. The fried sweet potato had a crispy texture and was enjoyable. The small tempura rice bowl and tea were both ordinary, lacking distinctive flavors. The homemade sherbet, especially the sweet potato flavor, had a unique texture but was mildly sweet. While the tempura was exceptional, other dishes were average in taste. The service attitude was a bit uncomfortable, leading to a lower rating. However, the staff members were very kind and attentive from the moment we entered until we left, leaving a positive impression. Overall, it could have been a satisfying experience if not for the service aspect.

I was taken to this restaurant by a local from Kyoto. It was truly an amazing place! The ingredients were fantastic, and everything I ate was delicious! It seems like a well-known restaurant even among the locals. Of course, we ended the meal with tempura. I would love to revisit this place on a special occasion.

During my first trip to Kyoto, I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto and was looking for delicious restaurants in Kyoto when I discovered this place! The food was unbelievably delicious, and the chef's personality was truly amazing!! I left feeling satisfied and full, and even on my way to the taxi, the chef suggested a place to go, which was very helpful since I was having trouble using the Go app in Kyoto! The chef was able to smoothly handle customers who were saying rude things like "the tempura at this place is all-you-can-eat!" or "the tempura at Fuji Soba in Tokyo is better than the tempura here in Kyoto!" I was impressed by how he handled it! The only downside was that the flowers in front of me were wilted. When I come back to Kyoto, I will definitely visit this place again!!!

On January 16, 2022, from 11:30, many people visited the restaurant since it was a Sunday. Despite having made a reservation the day before, the counter was full, so we sat at a table. The tempura was piping hot and crispy, which was great! For my first visit, I ordered the "Zen" set for 3,050 yen (tax included). It started with a refreshing puree of golden carrots. Then, there was sashimi of yellowtail with kombu soy sauce, grated daikon radish, and wasabi on the side - a nice balance of fatty and light. Moving on to the main tempura course: - First serving: two small shrimp and chrysanthemum greens. - Second serving: smelt fish and snow peas. - Third serving (last): cod wrapped in shiso leaves and broccoli. You can add more tempura at this point if you like. The meal ended with a tempura rice bowl, miso soup, and pickles. The sweet sauce on the tempura rice bowl was delicious. Note that they only accept cash for payment at lunchtime. The parking lot can fit about 6 cars, and they have a system where you park further back and tell them your spot number at the reception. The staff were kind and enhanced the delicious meal experience. I found a restaurant that I would like to visit again. Thank you for the meal.

The other day, the president of a client I accompanied to the Kyoto Concert Hall told me, "There's one seat empty, and our president seems to have taken a liking to you, so he's insisting that you come." I was happy to be invited, but I was curious about the meal that followed at Toyo-Tei right in front of us. The president's wife had requested it, but I was concerned that we were being entertained at a family restaurant. They had told me to come straight to the parking lot and take a taxi home, but I hesitated and decided to pass by the restaurant. I circled back and realized that the entrance was to the side, and indeed, there was a lantern outside the restaurant. The entrance was at the side after all. The restaurant was hidden in quite a secluded spot. I thought I had arrived early, but the couple was already there, occupying the counter seats. Counter seats are the best for tempura. Sitting in a counter seat at a sunken kotatsu-style table, I commented on how nice it was, and the wife said, "You know your stuff, don't you? Sorry for the sudden invitation." I was very grateful to be introduced to such a nice tempura restaurant. It's hard to discover places like this on your own. We chatted while enjoying appetizers, sashimi, and tempura, starting with shrimp, Biwako Honmoroko, a high-quality ingredient in Kyoto, and various Kyoto vegetables. Each dish was served at the perfect timing. As we talked and finished our meal, as expected, I was the one treated (Gochi). I had anticipated this, so I handed over 10 admission tickets to Daigo-ji Temple (worth 1500 yen each) with the words "Please go out with your friends." The wife was delighted and said, "Oh, with so many tickets, I'll go twice, so please come with me." I was overjoyed. Being invited is a wonderful thing♪

I visited with my relatives. The food was delicious and the service from the staff was excellent. I had made various requests when making the reservation, and I appreciate the polite responses I received. The sashimi, fish, and sweet potato tempura were incredibly tasty! The finale of the tempura bowl with oysters was pure happiness. The tempura had plenty of plump shrimp. I was very full by the end, so it's definitely worth a visit! Highly recommended restaurant.
