Lunch was at the renowned Michelin-starred restaurant "Sakagawa" in Gion, where Mr. Kitagawa, who had supported Sakagawa as the second-in-command for over 10 years, has now opened his own restaurant called "Kitagawa." They offer two different styles of dining - during the day, they serve "Tempura Rice Balls" and dashimaki tamago, and in the evening, they operate as a counter-style Japanese restaurant. I had the opportunity to visit this small four-seat counter restaurant and started with a Sapporo Red Star Lager and the dashimaki tamago. The lineup for the Tempura Rice Balls that day included shrimp, sea bream, conger eel, salmon, and squid. As I enjoyed the conversation with Mr. Kitagawa and savored the delicious Tempura Rice Balls and dashimaki tamago, I couldn't help but notice the customers coming in to buy these items for takeout. The Tempura Rice Balls, which are essentially small rice balls with tempura shrimp as the main ingredient, originated from a shop called "Senzu" in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. Nowadays, Tempura Rice Balls are well-known as a Nagoya delicacy. The ones served at "Kitagawa" have a unique style where the tempura, soaked in dashi broth, is placed on top of a rice ball shaped like a bundle and wrapped with seaweed. Although priced at 300 yen each, the conger eel and salmon Tempura Rice Balls are exceptionally delicious. "Kitagawa" offers a dining experience closer to a sushi restaurant rather than a rice ball shop, and in the evening, you can enjoy delicious dishes reminiscent of Sakagawa. After a quick meal, I hopped on the Randen train to Arashiyama for some autumn leaf viewing.

On this day, I visited "Tempura Kita" in Matsubara Kyogoku Shopping Street. It's located about 8-9 minutes from Gojo Station. I have been a regular customer here since it first opened. I often come for lunch or dinner. During the day, they serve tempura, and at night, they have a variety of creative dishes. This time, I went for dinner. I ordered the bonito sashimi, a special dish, and corn tempura. The cold tomato jelly appetizer was refreshing. The bonito sashimi is always delicious no matter the season. The special dish had amazing ingredients that made me very happy. The corn tempura was perfect for summer. I enjoyed some Ehime sake, including Ishizuchi, and had a great time. I look forward to my next visit.

Lunch is mainly takeout, but there are about 4 counter seats available for dining in. When I asked if I could eat in around 1 pm, they said they only had tempura but that was fine with me. I ordered a tempura platter with shrimp, sea bream, cod, and shiitake mushrooms, served on a plate with a bowl of miso soup. Unfortunately, they were sold out of rolled omelette. The tempura was light and fluffy, with a gentle seasoning that was very delicious. It was a small bite-size portion. It would have been nice if they had pickles and miso soup available. The total for 4 items was 1200 yen. The owner and the lady running the place were very friendly. I will definitely come back again, and I also want to try their evening menu.

This day started with breakfast in Kyoto. It's not a morning set, though. In the evening, we went to a traditional Japanese restaurant, and for lunch, we visited "Tempura Kitami," which serves tempura rice balls. When I was a child, I used to think about what surname I would like to have if I got married. My own surname was quite ordinary, so I always admired beautiful and auspicious surnames with a nice ring to them. That's why the surname "Kitami" caught my attention. The idea of having "abundant joy" in the surname is just lovely! Moving on, tempura in Kyoto? Not in Nagoya? Tempura seems to be quite a novelty for people living in Kyoto. It has become popular as a finger food that is perfect for children like Maiko to enjoy. The owner, Mr. Kitami (oh, the kanji is different), developed this tempura while training at "Gion Sakagawa," and it has been a hit ever since he opened his own restaurant. The casual café-like atmosphere inside the restaurant is perfect for both dining in and takeout. It's ideal for a morning meal! Tempura rice balls are available in 5-6 varieties depending on the time of day. From shrimp and simmered conger eel to spring bamboo shoots, summer conger eel, autumn salmon, and winter oysters, there is a wide selection to choose from. However, during Kyoto's summer, the famous "Kamo eggplant" is a must-try! As someone who loves eggplants the most among vegetables, I couldn't miss out on this. Shrimp, Kamo eggplant, and conger eel were my top picks! We arrived just as they were starting to cook, so we got to witness the tempura being fried right in front of us. The steaming hot tempura, served with warm rice, was a delightful sight. The skilled craftsmanship was evident as we watched them being made! The taste of the tempura was different from that of Nagoya's tempura, with a subtle and elegant dashi sauce flavor. It was a delicious and nutritious breakfast. The hot and fluffy dashi-maki tamago (Japanese rolled omelet) and cold green tea were also very tasty. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

I casually decided to take a trip to Kyoto from the morning. Osaka is really well located, isn't it? You can easily visit various sightseeing spots in Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, Shiga, Wakayama, depending on your mood. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even go on a day trip to Mie, Fukui, Ishikawa, Okayama, Tottori (๑•̀⌄ー́๑)b This time, I wanted to have a hearty breakfast, so I headed to Tempura Kisuke, which is about a 10-minute walk from Shijo Station. Actually, I visited this restaurant four years ago during Golden Week with food blogger friends in Kyoto, but unfortunately it was closed that day, so this visit was a long-awaited revenge. Finally, I made it to Kisuke's restaurant. There were no other customers, and the chef guided me to the counter seat. The chef here has been honing his skills for over 10 years at Gio Higashigawa, and he runs a tempura shop during the day and a traditional Japanese restaurant at night. I was looking forward to trying the tempura made by such a skilled chef. This time, I had shrimp, Kamo eggplant, and scallop tempura! The shrimp was firm and delicious as always. The scallop was also delicious, but the most delicious one this time was the Kamo eggplant! It was so delicious with the tempura sauce soaked in it. It's unfair how delicious it was. I also ordered the rolled omelette that I was curious about. It was also delicious. The chef, despite being a first-time visitor, was very friendly and talked about various things. He even recommended a nearby pizza place, so I decided to go there for lunch! I definitely want to visit Kisuke's restaurant at night as well. Thank you for the meal.

The shop owner made delicious tempura with rice cooked in a copper pot and homemade sauce. The tempura had a thin crispy coating and was really tasty. The shop owner was friendly, but unfortunately, there weren't enough items available, and I wanted to eat more tempura. Thank you for the meal!

I went to buy the lunch tempura once and called on the same day in the morning, but was able to secure a seat for the evening (usually requires reservation by the day before). Some items were not available, but overall it was enjoyable. The restaurant was small, about 5 seats or so. I had a great time with three regular customers. We enjoyed the Hankawa-style a la carte menu, including foie gras, simmered leaf vegetables, raw sea cucumber with vinegar, steamed red snapper with turnip, dried mullet roe with grilled Spanish mackerel, deep-fried red snapper collar, and a finishing porridge. Highly recommended for those tired of courses!

To be honest, I visited out of curiosity. I was looking for a restaurant that I could make a reservation online before 11:00, and I found "Kita"さん. I had the following dishes: Tempura with shrimp, shiitake mushrooms, scallops, and cod roe, as well as a Tamagoyaki from Ishizuchi (Nishijo City, Ehime Prefecture). I was surprised by the deliciousness, variety, and price. Tempura usually gives the impression of "putting shrimp tempura on rice balls," but here it felt more like "making a small tempura bowl." It was delicious. I wanted to try more varieties, but I had to hold back because I had lunch planned. There were around 8 different types of tempura, if I remember correctly. And all of them were priced the same. I was greedy and wanted to try more, so I also got some to take home. Just like the tempura bowls sold at a certain tempura restaurant in the department store basement, it still tasted good even after some time had passed. I imagined the restaurant to be small and cozy based on its appearance. The next day, I saw an advertisement on a city bus. Amazing. I would like to visit during the evening for a kaiseki meal next time. Thank you for the meal.

July's Premium Friday started with drinking in Kyoto from the morning♪ After having drinks at the first place, "Kuji Goji", I chose the second place for this time which is "Tenmusu Kita", open from 10 am. The owner of the restaurant used to work at the popular Japanese restaurant "Gion Sakagawa" for 10 years, as mentioned in the Kansai gourmet book "Amakara Techou". I had been wanting to visit this place ever since I read about it. - About the restaurant: Located about 7-8 minutes west of Matsubara Street, after heading north on Karasuma Street from Gojo Station. The restaurant is on the first floor of an apartment building, with no big sign, so you might not notice it unless you come looking for it. The majority of the interior is a kitchen, with only 4 counter seats for customers. It's a small restaurant run solely by the owner. - About the lunch menu: I visited around 10:15 am, so they were still in the middle of preparing ingredients, and the only available dishes were "Tenmusu" and "Dashimaki Tamago". I was hoping to try some of the wonderful dishes from Gion Sakagawa. The Tenmusu fillings for the day were shrimp, conger eel, sea bream, Kamo eggplant, conger eel, eel, and sandfish. - About the food: I tried the Tenmusu with shrimp, Kamo eggplant, and conger eel, as well as the Dashimaki Tamago. Instead of beer, I opted for cold sake this time. The sake options for the day were three types, and I chose "Houou Bida" Junmai Daiginjo. The Tenmusu was freshly made on the spot. The shrimp had a nice texture, the Kamo eggplant was juicy, and the conger eel was tender and delicious. The Dashimaki Tamago was soft and moist, with a rich dashi flavor. - About the restaurant being popular: Being a popular spot, I was the only customer at that early hour on a weekday. I spent about 30 minutes there, chatting with the owner about various topics. The dishes I tried were all delicious, but my favorite was the Kamo eggplant Tenmusu. The owner mentioned that all Tenmusu are priced at 270 yen each, and the Kamo eggplant is not a common choice, but those who try it always come back for more. I can understand why, it was really good. - Conclusion: Although I was satisfied with the food, I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't try the other dishes on the menu. I saw the evening menu, and it looked amazing. Next time, I'll make sure to make a reservation to try the other dishes as well. Overall, it was a great experience. The food was delicious, and I left the restaurant feeling satisfied. Now, even though my stomach is full, it's not even 11 am yet, so the food and drink adventure in Kyoto is far from over! Next stop, here I come!

I visited the restaurant around 1 PM on Sunday. I ordered the last 3 pieces of shrimp tempura and 2 slices of rolled omelette. I asked if it was okay to order just 3 pieces, and they said it was fine. The shrimp tempura was sweet and delicious, just as I wanted. The rolled omelette was juicy and had a great dashi flavor. The taste was just perfect for me! I want to make a reservation and go back for dinner too.

This is a Japanese restaurant located in Matsubara Shopping Street on Matsubara Street. The name "Tenmusu" is an original creation by the owner, Mr. Kitani, who is from Gion Sakagawa. It consists of tempura dipped in homemade sauce, placed on rice cooked in a feather pot, wrapped in seaweed, and served as onigiri. It's like having tempura-don in onigiri form. "Tenmusu" is only available for sale during lunchtime, mainly for takeout, but there are also 4 seats available for dining in. In the evening, "Tenmusu" is served as the finishing dish for the omakase course. The restaurant opened in August 2017. It is located about 8-10 minutes northwest from Gojo Station Exit 2. It may not be a tourist spot, but it has a nostalgic atmosphere. The restaurant is glass-fronted with only the name written on a signboard. If the lunchtime "Tenmusu" sign is not displayed, it may not stand out. I visited during lunchtime and made a reservation in advance for dining in. The interior is bright and simple. "Tenmusu" is sold in a showcase near the entrance. There are 4 seats at the counter. The owner, Mr. Kitani, is friendly and pleasant to talk to. The tempura toppings for "Tenmusu" include not only the regular ones but also seasonal variations. The lunch menu on this day included: - Tenmusu (each 270 yen) - Dashimaki (1 piece 680 yen, 1/2 piece 340 yen, 1/4 piece 170 yen) I ordered the following: - Dashimaki (1/2 piece, 340 yen) - Tenmusu (each 270 yen) - Shrimp, scallop, sea bream The tempura was not overly seasoned, allowing the dashi flavor to come through. The perfectly cooked rice complemented the tempura well. The standout was the shrimp, which I preferred over having it in tempura-don. I kept it to 3 pieces to save room for the next meal, but my companion added the squid. It's convenient to adjust the quantity based on your appetite. If it were nearby, I would definitely return to purchase "Tenmusu."

I have visited this area between Shijo and Gojo multiple times. This shop offers a variety of delicious dishes, including various types of tempura and dashimaki tamago for lunch, and enjoyable drinks and tasty food for dinner. This time, I tried four types of tempura and dashimaki tamago. There was sea bream, scallop, shrimp, and one more type. They were all delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I visited the restaurant again. The owner is from Ehime, so I tried Ehime's local sake. I enjoyed a beautiful bottle of sake with a label featuring Mt. Ishizuchi. I tried various dishes such as tempura and sashimi, but the unique beef stew with miso was delicious. For dessert, I had tempura balls. Thank you for the delicious meal. I would like to visit again.

Today, I stopped by a small restaurant to have a light meal before my main dessert reservation later. They specialize in tempura, and for lunch, they offer a dish called "tengu-mushi." I decided to dine in instead of taking out. They had a limited selection of tempura today - shrimp, sea bream, cod, and scallop. I also ordered a rolled omelette. The tengu-mushi consisted of a rice ball topped with tempura and wrapped in seaweed. The tempura had a thick batter and was flavorful, while the rolled omelette was also rich in flavor. I wish I could have tried some of the unique options like yellowtail or beef listed on the menu.

This is my first visit. Although the name of the restaurant includes "Tempura", you can enjoy various Japanese dishes at night. The owner seems to have trained at a famous traditional Japanese restaurant. The appetizers included firefly squid and roasted duck. I enjoyed grilled fish, scallop soup, and tempura of white fish and butterbur sprouts. They have a wide selection of drinks such as shochu and local sake from Ehime. The meal ended with a delicious tempura rice bowl. Thank you for the feast. I found another restaurant I want to visit again.

I read an article about what might be the smallest kappo restaurant in Kyoto and decided to visit. I called ahead to reserve a seat at the small okonomiyaki restaurant called "Take." The oysters were served after being cooked, so it was safe to eat them while enjoying some drinks and deciding on the menu. I ordered the Ankake Moroko, which took some time to prepare, so I snacked on daikon radish while waiting. The Moroko was cooked on a shichirin grill right in front of me, which added to the anticipation. It was served with ponzu sauce for dipping, but unfortunately, the taste was only of the ponzu sauce. Overall, dining at the counter and chatting casually while enjoying kappo cuisine was a pleasant experience.

Recently, it has been difficult to make plans far in advance. On the flip side, I sometimes end up with sudden free days. And this time, I decided to go to Kyoto, aiming for a place called "Temusu Kita." It is a small, inconspicuous shop located in a shopping street away from the bustling areas. I was amazed by the delicious temusu I bought for lunch before. And that's because the owner, Mr. Kita, spent 10 years at the famous restaurant "Gion Sakagawa." I knew that he also runs a traditional Japanese restaurant at night, so I always wanted to visit. With only 5 counter seats, the place may not have a fancy decor or atmosphere, but I feel strangely calm, perhaps due to Mr. Kita's gentle demeanor. I started by ordering a beer and looking at the menu written on a wooden board. Soon, the appetizer arrived, and I couldn't help but feel delighted. The plate included icefish, yuba, salted fish roe, pounded burdock, and broccoli in broth. Each dish was of surprising quality. Especially the icefish cooked in a light broth was superb, and I couldn't help but mutter "delicious..." Mr. Kita quickly responded, "Sweetfish always manages to delight us throughout the year, right?" I ordered: - Grilled oysters: perfectly grilled with a savory sauce. - Grilled moroko fish: fresh from Lake Biwa, expertly grilled to perfection. - Assorted simmered vegetables: meticulously prepared with a delicious broth. - Simmered sardines: crunchy with a hint of bonito flakes. - Shrimp cream croquette: freshly fried in front of me, with plump shrimp inside. - Tempura: half of it was used for a delicious tempura rice bowl. I might have wanted some soup, but anyway, coming all the way to Kyoto was worth it. It was a truly enjoyable moment to savor such amazing dishes. The setting may not be impressive, but the hidden gem of exquisite cuisine is worth experiencing. For a simple lady from Kanto, a small traditional Japanese restaurant in Kyoto may seem as intimidating as the Tokyo Skytree. I hope you can understand the joy of finding such a place. I am already looking forward to enjoying bamboo shoots to my heart's content when the season comes. As it is a small shop, I highly recommend making a reservation if you plan to visit. Thank you, Mr. Kita, for the wonderful meal. It was delicious. Thank you for the feast.

The owner of this tempura restaurant trained at Sakagawa and also operates as a high-end Japanese restaurant at night. The restaurant has a good rating on Tabelog (3.51 as of January 2020). During my first visit, I tried tempura leftovers of shrimp, matsutake mushrooms, salmon, and cod, one piece each. On my second visit, I made a reservation in advance and tried shrimp, sea bream, and scallop, one piece each (250 yen per piece). The tempura here comes with sauce, so even when I arrived soon after opening, the batter was a bit soggy. The batter is on the thicker side in my opinion. While I didn't have high expectations for the oil quality or tempura batter, the rice is cooked in a special pot and both the tempura and rice were not soggy. The cylindrical shape of the tempura makes it easy to eat. Despite the slightly inconvenient location, the tempura is large and satisfying for the price. I was impressed by the extensive selection of a la carte dishes on the evening menu and would like to visit at night if I have the chance.

[Date] November 21, 2019 (Thursday) 12:09 PM [Ratings] 3.51 [Waiting time] None [Service] Good [Would visit again] Yes I happened to be in the neighborhood and decided to visit this rare tempura restaurant in Kyoto. They don't seem to make a lot of tempura in advance, which is good to reduce food waste. I asked if I could make a reservation next time to ensure I get what I want, and they said it's possible. [Ebi Tempura] A perfect size for men to eat in one bite. The batter is already soaked in the broth, so you can just bite into it. Unlike the tempura I've had before, the broth in Kyoto is perfectly balanced and delicious. The tail was crispy and the bamboo leaf added a nice flavor. I definitely want to eat this again. [Tai Tempura, Salmon Tempura, Scallop Tempura] These unique tempura items were good, with my preference being Ebi Tempura because it was too delicious. I was satisfied after eating one of each. [Dashi Tamago (Rolled Omelette) 1/4 piece] Although there were half pieces in the showcase, I only wanted a quarter piece. It was a rich yellow rolled omelette and tasted delicious. Prices: Ebi Tempura 250 yen x 5 Tai Tempura 250 yen x 1 Salmon Tempura 250 yen x 1 Scallop Tempura 250 yen x 1 Dashi Tamago 1/4 piece, probably 150 yen

Visited for the first time on a Saturday evening in August 2019. "Tengumusukita" is a specialty tempura shop opened by someone who honed their skills at "Gion Sakagawa". I was very interested and planned to buy some to take home. I pre-ordered 1 piece of each of the following: Tempura (Shrimp, Scallop, Sea Bream) for 250 yen each, and seasonal options (Kamo Eggplant, Matsutake Mushroom) as well as 2 pieces of Dashimaki (rolled omelette) for 150 yen. The shop is located in Matsubara Kyogoku Shopping Street, and I walked there from Shijo Station. I paid and picked up my order the day before. The service over the phone and in person was very polite. I enjoyed the tempura in the evening after returning home. Each tempura was delicious with well-seasoned ingredients and the rice was tasty even when cold. The Dashimaki was also well-made and satisfying. The total price of 1,400 yen was very reasonable for the quality. I had a great meal and will definitely visit again. Thank you for the delicious food!
