In Kyoto in June, there are many excellent sweets shops beyond imagination in the city. Located near Shimogamo Shrine, the birthplace of mitarashi dango, this shop is known as the origin of mitarashi dango and has a high rating of "★3.72/519 reviews" in the Sweets WEST Top 100 Stores 2020. The shop is called Kamo Mitarashi Chaya in Kyoto. The store opens at 9:30 in the morning, so I visited accordingly. There is a nice garden next to the store. The mitarashi dango for takeout starts from 650 yen for 5 pieces. The seasonal sweet "Minazuki" was 250 yen each. I ordered when they were being baked, and they looked great. The mitarashi dango for 650 yen for 5 pieces is served hot with a generous amount of sauce and neatly wrapped. The dango is small but has a soft and crispy texture, with a warm soy sauce flavor without excessive sweetness, making it mild and gentle. The combination is wonderful, especially when you enjoy it while mixing the sweet bean paste generously. The Minazuki for 250 yen each looks good and has a pleasant taste. I took out this time, but I definitely want to enjoy it slowly in the store next time. As a fan of mitarashi dango, this was a shop I wanted to visit. The customer service was also friendly and welcoming. Thank you for the meal! (^o^)

Located a 17-minute walk from Demachiyanagi Station on the Keihan Electric Railway, our restaurant is on the west side of Shimogamo Shrine. No parking available. Established in 1922, we are a well-known traditional tea house in Kyoto. Our specialty is the famous Mitarashi dango, said to be the birthplace of Mitarashi dango. There was a long line on this weekend day, but the turnover was faster than expected. The exterior has a charming atmosphere. Outside the store's exit, there is an outdoor seating area with red cloth-covered tables. I ordered the Kamo Mitarashi, 5 pieces for 700 yen including tax. The grilled mochi's smoky flavor combined with the sweet and savory sauce was exquisite and quite delicious. By the way, there are a total of 5 dango skewered, and the unique feature of our store is that one of them is separated. This is said to represent the foam of the water springing from the Mitarashi pond in the "Tadasu no Mori" at Shimogamo Shrine. The expiration date is only for the day of purchase. Definitely a place worth revisiting.

After visiting Shimogamo Shrine, we went to a popular bakery nearby and saw a long line across the street, which turned out to be a shop selling mitarashi dango. Upon searching, we found out that this shop is a famous one! We had to go. The mitarashi dango sold here are made in the shape of bubbles formed by the spring water from Mitarashi Pond in Tadasu no Mori near Shimogamo Shrine. We learned this later! Since we were traveling as a pair, we decided to get the smallest portion of five dango. The staff strongly advised us to eat them on the same day, so we tried one right away. It was hot and delicious! The temperature today was 35℃! We saved the rest to enjoy back at the hotel. The dango were elegantly small and chewy, served with a generous amount of sweet yet not overwhelming sauce. It was absolutely delicious. Thank you for the meal.

During my trip to Kyoto, I visited this shop near Shimogamo Shrine. I must admit, I came here mainly for the rice cakes. It was just before lunchtime, and there was a line outside, but I managed to order after a 15-minute wait. Luckily, I found a table right on time. Here's what I ordered: - Mitarashi (3 pieces + additional 1 piece) - Isomaki The Mitarashi rice cakes were on the smaller side but perfectly grilled, bringing out the sweetness of the rice cake. Topped generously with mitarashi sauce, the taste was truly amazing. The rice cake was delicious, and the sauce was so good that I almost wanted to drink it. The spoon provided seemed more suitable for savoring the leftover sauce rather than for pouring it over the rice cakes! The Isomaki, on the other hand, maintained the goodness of the grilled rice cake, simply seasoned with soy sauce and seaweed. It was also really delicious. Thank you for the meal.

After getting off at the bus stop, I found a restaurant that caught my eye, 【Kamo Mitarashi Chaya】. The entrance and building had a nostalgic atmosphere that intrigued me too much... so I decided to stop by. Upon entering, a cheerful voice greeted me, asking, "Will you be dining here?" It was hot outside, so I decided to dine inside the restaurant. (Although I couldn't help but think how the red bench outside would make a great photo spot.) It's a one order per person policy. I think that's pretty standard, but it seems like many tourists share one dish... The signature menu item, Mitarashi dango, is 3 skewers for ¥500, and each additional skewer is ¥170. They also recommended freshly made mochi and yokan. I ordered one plate of dango and yokan. They served tea as well, and when I thought about it calmly, the value for money was amazing! The Mitarashi dango sauce was unlike anything sweet I've ever tasted before. So, I decided to remove the dango from the skewer and eat it with the sweet sauce using a spoon. Delicious♡ The freshly made yokan had a smooth and elegant taste, similar to mizu yokan. I wanted to buy some wet karinto as a souvenir, but I had come dressed very lightly for the trip and didn't have much luggage, so I had to give up on that idea. Once again, I encountered some delicious food. Thank you for the meal.

[Personal Impression] ⭐️⭐️(out of 3 stars) This place is said to be the originator of mitarashi dango, but to be honest, it's not that delicious and the dango is dry. However, if you appreciate the traditional method they adhere to, you might find it acceptable. It's popular among tourists, but it seems like everyone has the same opinion...www 😂

I visited this restaurant for the first time in about 10 years. When I arrived around noon, there were only a few customers already seated. By the time I left, the restaurant was full, so I timed it well. Despite the scorching 38-degree heat that day, they served me piping hot roasted green tea. It was amazing how delicious it tasted even in the hot weather. The three pieces of mitarashi dango (500 yen) arrived in about 5 minutes. They were small and easy to eat, so I finished all three in no time. The dango itself was delicious, and the mitarashi sauce was just as tasty! They even provided a spoon, so I could thoroughly enjoy it until the last bite. Thank you for the meal.

I saw a set of 5 dango for the first time. The first one was placed a bit apart. The sauce had a taste more like black syrup than soy sauce, sweet and mild, with a different texture from mochi. It was slightly elastic but lacked the chewy texture, almost nonexistent. We also tried warabi mochi and a seasonal limited edition ice mochi, both of which were delicious. When we visited Shimogamo Shrine's Furumoto Noryo, the curtain was up even though it was a Wednesday. Normally they are closed on Wednesdays, so it was lucky for us.

I took a break at a sweet shop near Shimogamo Shrine. Since it is said to be the birthplace of mitarashi dango, I tried some. It had a fragrant aroma, and when I ate it with the sauce, it was so delicious that I couldn't stop eating. Usually, there's always a line, but it was lucky that I could enter without waiting.

At the Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto, I visited the famous wagashi shop, Kamo Mitarashi Chaya, to seek blessings and try their Mitarashi dango. The shop offers dine-in options, but it's always packed on weekends. Takeout starts from a set of 5 dango. The small dumplings are soaked in a generous amount of sweet syrup. I had them before drowning in the syrup. The roasted aroma is delightful. The syrup is sweet with a hint of soy sauce and a rich flavor. This traditional Mitarashi dango was divine. I was enchanted. Thank you for the meal.

I visited the Shimogamo Shrine and arrived at the restaurant around 4 p.m. There were a few empty seats inside. The turnover rate was high, with new customers coming in one after another. They also offer takeout, and there were customers waiting inside for their orders. ⭐️ I ordered the Mitarashi dango for ¥500. It was served piping hot, with steam rising from it. It comes in a set of 3, and although the dango themselves are small, they are just right for a snack. The flavor has a nice soy sauce aroma and is not overly sweet. There is plenty of sauce, so you can even drink it with a spoon at the end. The Kyoto dialect spoken by the staff was charming! ❣️

I went on a gourmet solo trip to Kyoto on a weekend and wanted to visit a famous sweet shop in Kyoto. I waited in a long line on Saturday evening and finally entered the shop near closing time. [Food] - Ordered 3 pieces of Mitarashi dango (¥500). As they are grilled when ordered, the scent of the dango and sweet bean paste arrives first. The dango I took a bite of was small, easy to eat, soft, chewy, and had a good texture. The sweet bean paste was mildly sweet with a mild salty flavor, delicious! It was easy to eat with a smooth paste rather than a sticky one, and it was great to eat it with the dango. [Staff & Building] - The staff had a casual atmosphere suitable for a sweet shop. The interior was beautiful, and it felt like a shop with a history as the birthplace of Mitarashi dango. The seating area was divided finely, making it easy for solo customers to visit. [Atmosphere & Purpose] - The customer base was mostly young women, and there were many tourists as well. Many groups of friends, couples, and families were using the shop. --- It exceeded the quality I had imagined for Mitarashi dango. It was a wonderful shop where you can enjoy delicious and elegant Mitarashi at a good cost performance. A must-visit when in Kyoto!

I visited this place near Shimogamo Shrine. It's the origin of mitarashi dango, where small dumplings are skewered with toothpicks. They are lightly sweetened with a sauce that's easy to eat due to their small size. They even provide a spoon, perfect for those who want to savor the sauce. Notes: - Lightly sweetened - Small dumplings - Delicious coffee - One dish per person - Takeout available

Rated 3.72 on Tabelog, this shop offers Kyoto's specialty mitarashi dango, selected as one of the top 100 sweets shops in the west in 2022. I've been wanting to visit for a long time, and finally made it! Arrived on a Sunday in early July around 3:30 PM, with a wait of 4-5 groups. We were seated within 10 minutes. Ordered: ・Mitarashi dango (3 skewers) - 500 yen ・Ogura shiratama (warabi mochi, ice cream, shiratama, kuromitsu) - 850 yen ・Iced coffee - 500 yen The mitarashi dango uses freshly baked mochi with a delicious char! The tables inside are small. It's a bit of a wait and a distance to get there, with only shrines around, but you must try the mitarashi dango here. Thank you for the meal!

On the fourth night of the trip. Traveling further west, we moved to Kuwana in Mie Prefecture by highway to visit shrines. From there, we took the National Route 421 for the first time to reach Yokaichi in Shiga Prefecture. From Yokaichi to eastern Kyoto, we took the highway again, and finally arrived at Kamo Mitarashi Chaya near Shimogamo Shrine. This shop is said to be the birthplace of Mitarashi dango. Even though it was past 5 p.m., the shop was crowded. The Mitarashi dango here come in a set of five. One of them is slightly separated. It is said that this represents the head of a person, and they are made to resemble a person's body with five parts. I was surprised to see the five Mitarashi dango served for 840 yen, along with green tea for 650 yen. They were not what I had imagined, being grilled dumplings with sauce, but they were quite fresh. They were warm from being freshly grilled, with a perfect balance of slight char and sweet sauce. I enjoyed them with green tea, savoring the afterglow of a long drive.

My husband and I visited this restaurant. We've tried to come here many times before, but gave up due to long lines or it being closed. Today, we were lucky as there was no line and we were seated right away. We ordered Mitarashi dango and cold sweet sake. The system was to pay at the table when the dishes were served. The sweet sake was a bit too sweet and rich for me, but adding the ginger helped balance it out. The price of 650 yen for a small cup was a bit expensive. The Mitarashi dango was served with toothpicks stuck in them, which was a bit amusing. The dango was a bit firmer than I prefer, lacking a chewy texture. The filling was delicious! It was nice that they provided a spoon so we could enjoy it all without leaving any behind. The staff were all very friendly, which was a plus. However, I don't think I would wait in line again to visit this place.

Takeout 5 pieces of mitarashi dango for ¥650. The small-sized dango has a good texture, not as fluffy as Sentauro's. The mitarashi sauce is mildly sweet. Couldn't finish them all, so reluctantly stored them in the fridge, but somehow the sauce remained runny. Isn't mitarashi sauce supposed to solidify when chilled?

Located near Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto, "Kamo Mitarashi Chaya" is famous for its sweet treats after shrine visits! This shop has a history that dates back to around 1922, making it over 100 years old! The Mitarashi dango, though small, is perfectly grilled and has a delicious sweet and salty flavor that keeps people coming back for more. I visited on a weekday afternoon and the place was quite busy with visitors coming and going. I ordered a serving of Mitarashi dango and it arrived quickly, freshly grilled and delicious. The dango was small and round, grilled to a crispy perfection. The texture was firm yet chewy, and the overall taste was overwhelmingly delicious. While some may find it to be an absolute delicacy, personal preferences may vary. The difference in grilling can affect the taste. They also offer takeout for souvenirs, but nothing beats enjoying the freshly grilled dango on-site. If you ever visit Kyoto, I recommend stopping by "Kamo Mitarashi Chaya" and experiencing it for yourself. The Food Log rating is 3.72.

A shop near Shimogamo Shrine, the birthplace of mitarashi dango. Of course, I ordered 3 mitarashi dango for 450 yen. The freshly baked dango has a firm texture. The mitarashi sauce has just the right sweetness. There may be lines at times, so it's worth stopping by when it's not too busy. A memorable visit.

At the approach to Shimogamo Shrine, there were some food stalls set up, and I decided to get the 5-piece set of mitarashi dango for 650 yen to go. When I received it, it was still hot, so I wondered if it was freshly grilled. Upon opening the bag, the mitarashi sauce was warm and generous. I tried one right away and it had a subtly sweet and mature flavor. The dango was small but chewy. It was gone in no time. Each skewer had 1 dango + 4 more lined up, with a nice light sear. There was plenty of mitarashi sauce left, so I took it home and later bought some pack mochi to microwave and drizzle the sauce over. I'd like to try it at the store next time.

Visited on a weekday afternoon. Arrived before 2:30 pm and there were 5 people waiting outside. Waited for about 10 minutes before being seated. This is the origin of the famous Mitarashi dango, and it's my wife's favorite place. This time, we ordered "3 pieces of Mitarashi dango for 450 yen" and it was served in about 3 minutes. Among the 5 dumplings, one was placed separately in a unique way. The mochi had a firm texture, almost like it was tightly packed, and a prominent fragrance. The sweet red bean paste was rich and sweet but had an elegant touch. Also, the charred flavor seemed to add an accent. It's located near the World Heritage Site Shimogamo Shrine, so it's a good place to stop by when sightseeing. Personally, I might not have preferred the texture of the dumplings. Thank you for the meal.
