A traditional Japanese confectionery shop in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. Among the many famous Kyoto sweets, the shining star for me is their black honey dumplings. I've tried various Japanese confections, but this one stands out. It's a simple treat - dumplings pierced on a skewer, generously coated with honey made from black sugar, and dusted with kinako (soybean flour). That's it. Just a heads up, it's best to have a cloth handy before eating as the kinako tends to spill. It's similar to Kikyo Shingen Mochi in terms of spillage. There are similar sweets available, even at a nearby shop called Narumi, but I prefer the black honey dumplings from Bitamaya. They only sell them in packs of 10 and advise to consume them the same day. It's almost like a challenge for someone living alone, but they are so delicious that you'll end up finishing them easily. Sometimes they have a pop-up store in department stores, but they only sell packs of 5 there for some reason. It would be great if they could do the same at the main store. However, the competition is tough when it comes to selling at department stores.

A small Japanese confectionery shop located on Kamigamo Kitaoji Street. Bought as a souvenir at the recommendation of a friend. The dango with plenty of kinako and black syrup has a nostalgic and comforting taste. It can be a bit messy with the kinako scattering, but it's a reliable and traditional dango.

I cycled north along the Takano River... and turned west around a little past Shimogamo Shrine... I arrived around 12:55 with no customers in sight... I bought the signature black honey dumplings for 1296 yen in cash. It seems I have to eat them today... Next, I will aim for Hyakumeiten, a traditional Japanese sweets shop inside Shimogamo Shrine. I enjoyed the chilled dumplings at home... the black honey was sweet and delicious.

This restaurant in Kyoto is known for its delightful scent of roasted soybean flour throughout the entire place, making it a dream come true for soybean flour enthusiasts. While they offer a variety of tempting sweets, almost all customers come here to order the "black honey dumplings"! According to the respected wagashi buyer H from Takashimaya department store, this is a must-try treat for those taking the Takashimaya Kyoto flight. I actually tried it for the first time this time! Although it may look plain, after taking a bite, my daughter and I exchanged looks and simultaneously exclaimed, "Delicious~~!!" The soft dumplings coated in gooey black honey and generously sprinkled with fragrant soybean flour make this simple confection irresistibly tasty! I feel like I could easily eat about 10 of them alone! Highly recommended!! Japanese people should definitely try it! I also hope people from overseas will give it a try! That's the kind of traditional Japanese sweet it is!

It's a traditional Japanese sweet with plenty of roasted soybean flour and sweet black syrup, which pairs well together. The price is reasonable and it tastes nostalgic. The sweetness is just right and it goes really well with tea. A pack of 5 costs a little over 600 yen, which is quite reasonable nowadays. The combination of black syrup and roasted soybean flour is reminiscent of kuzumochi, but it also has an elegant Kyoto-like sophistication that sweet lovers will adore.

Visited the popular Japanese confectionery shop "Bitamaya" in Matsugasaki. Feeling a bit uneasy with the shutter half closed, but decided to enter. ○ Black honey dumplings (¥1296) The visual... reminiscent of Nara's "kinako dumplings." And of course, it was delicious. A different deliciousness from "kinako dumplings." The dumplings have a quite sticky texture, similar to mochi. The black honey, despite being called black honey, was quite light, not overly sweet, and had a jelly-like texture, just like warabi mochi. No wonder it goes well with kinako powder. It was delicious. I thought 10 pieces were a bit too many, but since they were so delicious, it wasn't a problem as I ended up eating them all.

A super famous odango shop♪ The freshly made ones are the best!! During the still cold season, they tend to harden little by little. It's recommended to purchase them when you can eat them right away. They are light and easy to eat. Thank you for the meal♡

I went there wondering how it would be, and they were selling it even on New Year's Eve. I tried it for the first time and was surprised and impressed by its amazing taste from the first bite! Although it's a bit pricey for a pack of 10, it's definitely worth it for the flavor. I will definitely buy it again. I ended up eating 7 in one go by myself, and had the remaining 3 as a snack later that night, finishing them all on the same day. After some time, it seemed like the black syrup and kinako blended together perfectly, becoming moist and gooey. As mentioned in reviews, there is a generous amount of 'kinako' in it, so a considerable amount of 'kinako' is left at the bottom of the pack. I think I'll sprinkle it on mochi or something tomorrow (New Year's Day) to finish it off. This is seriously delicious enough to want to tell someone about it. It became the perfect main dish (like Fukuyama Masaharu?) to close out the year.

I chose the soft black honey dumplings instead of the bean daifuku that my husband might not like. Today's snack was decided to be traditional Japanese sweets from Kyoto Express. I happened to visit on a Monday and was able to buy them in a good timing as there was a line at the entrance of JR Nagoya Takashimaya. They only come in a pack of 5, generously coated with black honey and plenty of yellow powder. They were soft and delicious.

On November 27, 2022 (Sunday) at 10:53 AM, [Eat Log Rating at the Time of Visit] 3.66 [Waiting Time] 1 person (4 minutes) [Customer Service] Excellent [Likelihood to Visit Again] Definitely [Payment Method] Cash [Turnover] Good [Black Honey Dumplings] 1 pack of 10 pieces - These are large white rice dumplings covered in black honey and dusted with soybean flour. The black honey has a refined sweetness, and surprisingly, the black honey flavor is subtle. The combination of black honey and soybean flour creates a collagen-like or gelatinous elasticity that I really enjoy. It pairs perfectly with warm tea. It would be great if they offered a pack of 5, but unfortunately, they only sell them individually. Price: 1,296 yen.

It's an old Japanese confectionery shop near Charyo Hosei. The storefront may not be the best, but I was intrigued by the famous black honey dumplings, so I bought them. They are generously filled with plenty of both black honey and soybean flour, just as it appears. If you love sweetness, it's definitely recommended. The texture is nice and chewy even when it cools down. The only downside is that they only sell them in packs of 10, which is a shame. They are not cheap, and although the volume is similar to grilled rice cakes, it's hard to finish them all and it feels wasteful to throw them away, so I probably won't buy them again. I recommend it for families. Thank you for the meal.

A shop located along Kitaoji Street. Their famous black honey dumplings can also be found at Takashimaya. They kindly wrapped one for me to take away. The chestnut is a beautiful yellow color and is sweetly boiled. The smooth red bean paste filling is delightful. The wrapping paper features Ohara women and Shimogamo Shrine. Besides the chestnut dumplings, I also took photos of other traditional Japanese sweets. The shop's namesake sweet, Mitama, is served in a wooden box labeled Miyoshi for some reason. The black honey dumplings can be purchased at Takashimaya, where you can buy them in packs of five, which might be more convenient. Most chestnut mochi shops also sell chestnut red rice.

It's been a while since I had the delicious Kuromitsuya's black honey dumplings. It's been about 5 years, I think? Dumplings, soybean flour, black honey - when these three come together, it's pure happiness, the best combination, right? It comes in a pack of 10, which is a bit much for one person, so when I mentioned that, they kindly accommodated me by offering a special 5-piece pack. Thank you very much! Black honey dumplings, 5 pieces (special) ¥648. I'll definitely stop by again. The incredibly delicious black honey dumplings were a feast. Thank you!

Located a 12-15 minute walk from Matsugasaki Station, Mitarashiya is a popular traditional Japanese sweets shop known for its black honey dumplings. In addition to dumplings, they offer a variety of other Japanese sweets, making it a perfect place for souvenir shopping. Since the black honey dumplings don't last long, it's best to try them when you can eat them right away. This time, I purchased the popular menu items, Kurimochi and Kurimushi Yokan. Both are luxurious sweets with large chestnuts that evoke the feeling of autumn, generously filled with sweet bean paste. The Kurimochi, with its perfect balance of chewy mochi texture and chestnut flavor, provides a satisfying experience with just one bite! It's a must-visit shop when strolling along Kitaoji Street. Enjoyed the meal!

I think I may have had too high expectations. I saw a really delicious-looking article about Kyoto's dango in a LINE Magazine and decided to go try it. The article mentioned that the kuromitsu (black sugar syrup) and kinako (soybean flour) would melt in your mouth, but in reality, the kuromitsu was more like a thick jelly and didn't blend well with the kinako. The dango had a supermarket-like texture, and I prefer a softer mochi texture. It just wasn't to my liking. Also, it's inconvenient that they don't sell them individually ( ; ; ) They only sell them in packs of 10 for 1296 yen. It's tough to eat them if they're not to your taste.

First visit! The owner, maybe the grandfather, was a kind person. I thought they only sold packs of 10, but when I asked, I could buy just 5. The best combination of black honey and kinako. The dango was soft and good.

Located on the west side of Kitaoji Street, just north of Kamigamo Hondori, Mitamaya is a Japanese sweets shop. Their dumplings with black honey and roasted soybean flour are delightfully chewy with a very pleasant texture! The consistency remains unchanged over time, making it enjoyable both at room temperature and chilled, perfect for the summer season! This item is also convenient as a gift.

This time, on Thursday at 2:00 pm... I was waiting in line at Hankyu Department Store to purchase something else. It seemed to be sold at the same time as that product, and the lady in front of me in line said, "These dango are delicious too," so I decided to buy them. The dango was chewy, with rich black honey and fragrant kinako... the balance was just perfect ♡ Not too sweet, so you can't help but reach for another one. It would go well with strong tea and you'd want to savor it slowly♪ I want to go to Kyoto again... ✨✨ Thank you for the wonderful meal (๑>◡<๑)

I bought black syrup dumplings. They are not sold individually, you can only buy them in sets of 10. When I visited in the evening, they were sold out so be careful. The dumplings were moist with plenty of black syrup. They weren't exceptionally delicious, but they had a good old-fashioned feel.

Located just off Kitaoji Street, near the Kamigamo Higashihoncho bus stop, in the quiet residential area of Kamigamo in Kyoto. It's like the Futakotamagawa of the Shin-Tamagawa Line era in Tokyo. This is a typical Japanese confectionery shop in the area. They offer treats like black bean daifuku, manju, sekihan, and ohagi, but the most popular item is their specialty black honey dumplings! Each skewer has three slightly small dumplings coated in black honey, with a generous amount of kinako powder on top... more like soaked or immersed in it? There's so much that it ends up being excessive. Surprisingly, despite the abundance of kinako, it's not overwhelmingly sweet overall, making it easy to enjoy as a tea snack. It seems to be a familiar taste for my partner and their family, so we often buy it for home or as gifts. A pack of around ten skewers costs about a thousand yen, but you can also buy just five skewers if you ask. The combination of dumplings, kinako, and more seems to be a timeless favorite, much like the grilled mochi in front of Imamiya Shrine, said to be the birthplace of Japanese confectionery.

Located on the west side of Kitaoji Street at the intersection of Kamigamo Motodori, the well-known wagashi shop Mitamaya is famous for its black honey dumplings. While some dumplings lose their deliciousness over time, these black honey dumplings are perfect for takeout and remain delicious even when eaten later at home. I also tried the seasonal chestnut mochi, which was also delicious for takeout!
