Located about a 15-minute walk from Kyoto Karasuma Station, this restaurant is dedicated to Nishikyo-zuke, a traditional Kyoto pickling method with a history of almost 100 years. The first floor features a retail section focusing on Nishikyo-zuke products, while the second floor serves as a dining area. I arrived five minutes early for my 11 a.m. reservation and was guided to a waiting area next to the first-floor store. When 11 a.m. arrived, my name was called, and I took off my shoes to go upstairs. The staircase and flower arrangements had a lovely atmosphere. Upon reaching the second floor, the staff welcomed me with a bow. There were table seats with tatami flooring and sunken kotatsu-style seating rooms. I was led to a kotatsu-style room with four tables. The menu offered one course option priced at 3,950 yen, with additional a la carte items available. I opted for the course with matcha (4,250 yen). The seasonal appetizer platter was beautifully presented on a dish shaped like the character "一" from Kyoto's Ichino Den. The dishes included simmered beans and Omi konjac, vinegar miso with Shimotsuma green onions and Hokkigai clams, pressed sardines, savory simmered shrimp, pickled rapeseed greens with miso, squid ink mochi, white miso-dressed watercress and shad sashimi. Each dish was meticulously prepared and evoked the essence of the season. The sashimi was served with celery soy sauce. The miso soup with salmon and yuba was comforting on a cold day, with the richness of sake lees and white miso warming the body. The daikon mochi with ginger sauce was a unique twist on the traditional dish, featuring grated daikon radish and chicken soboro inside the mochi, complemented by a subtly gingery sauce. The miso-grilled black cod, marinated meticulously by Kyoto Ichino Den for over 90 years, was a delightful pairing with rice. The tableside-cooked rice using Tango's Koshihikari rice in an earthen pot was shiny and flavorful, served with a side of miso soup and Kyoto pickles. The meal ended with a strawberry mousse and matcha, showcasing the restaurant's attention to detail in dessert presentation. The overall dining experience was enhanced by the attentive service and explanations provided by the staff, allowing for a leisurely and enjoyable meal. Additionally, becoming a member (free registration) offered discounts of 5% off the bill on the same day and 10% off purchases on the first floor, making it a great deal.
