Around last autumn, when the restaurant opened at 7 o'clock, about 4 groups entered at the same time, and by 7:30, it was almost full. The maximum group size is 3 people, and silence is required while eating, with minimal conversation. It's rare in these times to find a cafe where smoking is allowed, so be aware. We ordered the Pudding Set (880 yen) and my companion got the A Set (720 yen). The homemade pudding, made with quality ingredients, was so firm that the spoon could stand in it - amazing! The caramel sauce was not too bitter, slightly sweet. Not too heavy, so we finished it in no time! The hot cafe au lait in the set was rich and had a nice aroma. My companion said the toast and eggs were delicious too. With several branches nearby, it's clear why this place is popular! They open early in the morning and have a welcoming atmosphere, making it easy for solo diners. Highly recommended! Thank you for the meal! ★

Visited around 9 am on the weekend. The restaurant was almost full. I had the Morning Menu A Set (¥900-). The bread was delicious. The sausage and potato salad were also quite tasty. The coffee was a simple blend. The worn-out containers were a bit of a concern, but overall, I was satisfied. It was nice that smoking was not allowed during the morning hours.

I visited Takagi Coffee Shop Takatsuji Honten, a long-established coffee shop in Kyoto Karasuma. I went for breakfast on this day. The breakfast was very generous. It was exactly the classic coffee shop that I love. I hope that Japan's coffee shop culture continues to thrive, and I will support it quietly. Thank you for the meal. I will visit again.

I had some business in the area and decided to have breakfast after it was done. It was my first time visiting, so I went for the most luxurious (lol) option - scrambled eggs and sausage on toast, with an iced coffee. The scrambled eggs were satisfying with about two eggs' worth, and the sausages, two of them, were crispy and delicious. The toast was thick and already spread with butter. The butter soaked in and made it delicious. At one point, a family with children tried to enter but was turned away. I asked and found out that the restaurant has a smoking permit in Kyoto, so children and minors are not allowed inside. (Luckily, no one was smoking while I was there.) Thank you for the meal!

I am traveling around the country in search of truly delicious food. I love anything delicious, from high-end cuisine to casual dishes. 【Area】Kyoto Prefecture Kyoto City Area【Genre】Café【Award】Tabelog Café Top 100 2022【Number of Visits】First time【Crowdedness】Not particularly crowded【One-word Comment】Kyoto's sweets & bread, café tour part 2, stop 9. Kyoto's cafés also have many high-level places. I visited Takagi Coffee, a popular café, for the first time and had their morning set. I arrived around 10:10 am and it was almost full, showing its popularity. There were also many foreigners. Morning Set A: 900 yen. First of all, the toast was delicious! I'm not sure if it's the butter or the bread that's delicious, but it's clearly different from others! The sausage was also delicious, and the scrambled eggs were satisfying in both quantity and taste! The potato salad was also tasty! I wanted to go again, and now I understand why it's a top-ranked café!

I visited during the early afternoon on a weekday. The restaurant can accommodate about 12 groups, and there were 6 groups including mine when I visited. I ordered the specialty "Homemade Rum Pudding" (¥550) and "Blend Coffee" (¥500). It seems there's a ¥50 discount when you order sweets with a drink. The pudding was firm and had a traditional old-fashioned coffee shop pudding taste! You can smell the rum, but the alcohol taste is mild, making it enjoyable even for children. It's a generous portion, not too sweet, so I finished it quickly. The coffee had a strong bitterness but was easy to drink and paired well with the pudding. I'm thinking of trying their breakfast next time. Since smoking is allowed, those under 20 are not allowed to enter. They seem to be considerate of the environment inside the restaurant, so for those who don't mind smoking, I think it's a quiet and cozy place to be in. ☻

Visited on August 2, 2023 🎉 Congratulations on being selected as one of the top 100 cafes on Tabelog in 2022! 🌟 Morning Set (A) for 900 yen *Includes blended coffee* Homemade Rum Raisin Pudding for 550 yen. Good morning from day 5 of my 2023 Kyoto trip! Today is the second day in Kyoto. When choosing a hotel this time, the key point was "having a nearby cafe where I can have breakfast." Here at this cafe, I can enjoy both Takagi Coffee Shop and Maeda Coffee. This morning, I would like to have a basic morning set at Takagi Coffee Shop. Established in 1976, Takagi Coffee Shop is a nostalgic old-fashioned cafe with a lovely atmosphere. Located near Takatsuji Muromachi, it's close to Shijo-Karasuma and situated in a corner of the office district. Takagi Coffee Shop was started by three individuals who used to work at the famous Kyoto cafe "Inoda Coffee." Waiters in a Showa-era style with bow ties and white shirts warmly welcome guests. The customers seem to be regulars and a pair of office workers. The jazz music playing inside creates a very relaxed atmosphere. The A set includes thick toast, scrambled eggs, sausage, potato salad, and coffee. The thick toast that comes with the A set can be served with butter, jam, or cinnamon. The generously spread rich butter soaks into the toast, making it incredibly delicious! The scrambled eggs are cooked to perfection, and the sausage seems to be fried before being grilled, giving it a crispy and juicy texture. The slightly spicy potato salad complements the bread well. The in-house roasted coffee is delicious with a deep roast. The famous homemade Rum Raisin Pudding at Takagi Coffee Shop has an old-fashioned firm texture that is popular among regulars. When you put your spoon in, the pudding has a satisfyingly firm and bouncy texture, not a joke. When you taste it, you can enjoy a hint of rum aroma that lingers through your nose. For a break from work or a rest during sightseeing, why not enjoy some adult sweetness with coffee?

Used for lunch during a trip. It's common to have trouble getting into restaurants with names that include "100" in them, but we were seated without waiting around noon. Since smoking is allowed throughout the restaurant, non-smokers and families with children may find it difficult to use. I was torn between a sandwich, but when I discovered the pork cutlet curry on the menu, I immediately ordered it for 1,400 yen. It comes with salad and coffee, so it's a good deal. The curry sauce was light and the pork cutlet was thinly sliced into bite-sized pieces, making it easy to eat.

I wanted to have breakfast, so I went to Takagi Coffee Shop, which opens from 7 am. Smoking is allowed, so regular customers were smoking inside, but the place was clean and didn't smell like cigarettes. The morning set was delicious and generous. I heard their firm pudding is famous, so I want to try it next time. Thank you for the meal!

On this day, I revisited the streets I walked in Kyoto two days ago. I wanted to have breakfast, so I left early, but I ended up spending time looking for a coin locker at Osaka Station, and by the time I arrived at the restaurant, it was already past 10 a.m. I was worried that I might have missed the morning service, but when I checked the reviews, I found out that breakfast was available until 11 a.m., which was a relief. When I arrived at the restaurant, a woman was entering just before me, so I thought I might not get a seat. However, it turned out that the restaurant does not allow children, so the woman with two kids was turned away. When I said, "I'm alone," I was immediately seated at a table for two. I ordered the A set (900 yen) with a hot coffee. The coffee arrived first in a thick cup, which seemed to be designed to keep it warm. It had a balanced flavor with a good mix of richness and acidity. The breakfast included thick toast, scrambled eggs, crispy sausages, and homemade potato salad that was addictive. It gave me a powerful start to my morning in Kyoto. The fact that they serve breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. is much appreciated.

The set of pudding and iced coffee for ¥1000. The pudding is a bit firm, not as creamy as expected. It feels more like jelly, with a normal taste. However, the cream and caramel are delicious. The spoon is very easy to use and I liked it. The coffee is light, not too bitter, easy to drink. But the place allows smoking, the service is unfriendly, and it has a nostalgic atmosphere, for better or worse.

A café located in the Shijo-Karasuma area. Both their morning set and snacks are popular. Many people come around the opening time at 7 a.m., so I visited around the time they finished their first round. There was a bit of a wait, but since it was morning, the turnover was fast. Many solo diners. The Morning Set A includes toast, scrambled eggs, grilled sausage, and potato salad. Coffee is the standard drink, but you can switch to a café au lait for an additional 200 yen. The menu is quite traditional, yet everything is delicious. The toast was perfectly grilled, with a fluffy texture inside, the scrambled eggs had an exquisite balance, the potato salad had just the right amount of chunky potatoes, and the crispy grilled sausage was a nice touch! It might not look like much, but you can feel the care put into making them. The kindness of the café au lait was also nice. Many people were even having their famous pudding for breakfast. For me, this was enough. It was a very delicious morning. Thank you for the meal.

The nostalgic atmosphere of the smoking allowed café made me feel nostalgic. Even though I don't smoke (lol), the omelette rice had a pilaf-like flavor rather than the usual ketchup rice, with a subtle taste and a strong bell pepper flavor, which was delicious. The ketchup sauce on top had a rich taste, so the mild flavor of the rice was just right. The pudding was firm and you could taste the rum, it was super delicious. They have various options like spaghetti, gratin, sandwiches, curry, etc., making it hard to decide.

I am Shinsuke Watanabe, Japan's most free-spirited branding consultant. I went to Kyoto the other day. After finishing some work, I searched for a place to have a late lunch before heading back. Among the many trendy new restaurants that seemed to have popped up due to the increasing number of foreigners, I stumbled upon an old-fashioned coffee shop that also served meals. It was the Takagi Coffee Shop Takatsuji Main Store, located a little south of Karasuma Station. Despite its retro exterior, the place didn't feel dirty at all. I was surprised when I entered - it's a rare find these days to have a smoking-permitted establishment. I don't smoke, so I felt a bit out of place as I looked through the menu. There were a lot of fried dishes, but they also had hamburgers. After some contemplation, I decided to go with my recent favorite, omurice. It had a thin omelette wrapping and the quality was on par with Western-style restaurants. The inside was not chicken rice but pilaf. While most omurice dishes come with tomato sauce, this one had demiglace sauce, which suited my preference for a lighter flavor. The meal also came with a salad and coffee. The sesame dressing on the salad was incredibly delicious, making me wonder if it was really made of sesame. Given the name Takagi Coffee Shop, their coffee must be their specialty, but I was already fully satisfied before the iced coffee after the meal. Of course, the coffee was also delicious. Branding is not about making things look good or profitable. It's about creating a differentiation that sticks in people's memories. In a world where cafes and coffee shops are everywhere, all competing to be Instagrammable and trendy, the unique skill that long-standing establishments possess, like being in business for X years, stands out. While modern trendy cafes may dominate the scene for now, I believe there will be a resurgence of Showa retro vibes. However, there's a difference between recreating a Showa taste and actually being a relic from the past, which gives a unique flavor. Longevity in business is the ultimate differentiator. Coffee shops often lack good food or variety, but if they offer dishes that rival Western-style restaurants like Takagi Coffee Shop, they can truly set themselves apart.

Morning Set A for 900 yen. Had a morning at a long-established coffee shop. Toast, scrambled eggs, sausage, and potato salad - a classic morning set! Good atmosphere. Good taste. Thick and fluffy toast with butter is the best. However, 900 yen might be a bit pricey...

Attracted by the name "Lamprin," I woke up early and visited the restaurant. Since it was a weekday, it wasn't crowded, which was lucky. The morning menu looked appealing, but I had plans to eat a lot today, so I resisted and went for the Lamprin I was looking forward to. The Lamprin was a firm custard pudding, with a subtle sweetness and a light taste. I devoured it quickly! It paired well with coffee too! If I were to be picky, maybe a bit more rum flavor would have been nice... Sorry for being cheeky! But it was a good taste for a morning dessert.

I wanted to eat the pudding here, so I took a little detour to come here. I ordered a rum pudding, cheesecake, and a drink. The interior has a retro feel and smoking is allowed, so there is a tobacco smell (lol). About 80% of the customers were not smoking, so the remaining smell was tolerable. The pudding is firm and has a good texture, melting nicely in the mouth and delicious. The cheesecake is moist and good! I don't like tobacco, so I left quickly (lol).

Today we came here. It was before 9 a.m. on a weekday after breakfast, and we were able to enter without waiting in line. Most of the customers, over 80%, were foreign tourists, perhaps because this café is famous as a historic café in Kyoto. We ordered... - Iced coffee 500 yen/tax included - Homemade rum pudding 550 yen/tax included *You can get a 50 yen discount if you order a drink with the set. The iced coffee was refreshing, with a slightly deep flavor. It was easy to drink and perfect for a morning wake-up. The homemade rum pudding is said to be a specialty of this café. It was firm with a good blend of egg flavor and the slight bitterness of caramel. However, it didn't have as much rum flavor as expected, and you wouldn't have known if it wasn't mentioned. Thank you for the meal. It was a moment where I deeply felt the increase in tourists from Europe. *Visit Rating: 3.64

[TOP100 in 2022] Takagi Coffee Main Store (Visit Date: June 13, 2023 around 9:00) Takagi Coffee was originally created by someone who used to work at "Inoda Coffee," and it has the essence of a traditional coffee shop. Jazz music plays inside, and there are magazines available. It's a recommended space for everyone. ✔︎ Rum Pudding - Although they also offer morning sets, I ordered their specialty pudding. The large pudding was rich with a perfect firmness, complemented well by the cream. The caramel wasn't too bitter and was easy to eat. It was very delicious. ✔︎ Service and Atmosphere of the Restaurant - The cozy retro space is filled with both tourists and locals. Surprisingly, there were quite a few solo customers in the morning, which is recommended. However, it might be best not to linger too long to avoid causing inconvenience.
