Recently, the full business days have been reduced, taking into account the owner's health. Established 58 years ago! The owner is almost 90 years old! This is the most popular coffee shop "Jashumon". It stands quietly in a residential area in Setagaya. The only food available is toast, a true coffee shop. Nowadays, when people think of a "coffee shop", they might imagine spaghetti or omurice. But back in 1965 when Jashumon was established, a coffee shop that doesn't cook was the norm. So, at that time, the only thing available was toast that could be made in a toaster. Later on, with the coffee shop boom, chains and franchise stores started popping up. The interior of Jashumon is like a history museum surrounded by antiques. You can experience the "real retro" that has developed over the years.

I went around 12 o'clock on a regular day. This cafe was frequented by the writer Mari Mori before her passing. The impact of reading "Bed of Withered Leaves" during high school about 40 years ago is still unforgettable to me. By the way, Mari Mori was the eldest daughter of the literary master Ogai Mori, raised carefully by him, and she got married and moved to France in her teens, then returned, gave birth, went through a divorce, and made her debut as a writer at the age of 54. Her writing style, nurtured by her upbringing and experiences, is so aesthetic that it makes you dizzy. On the other hand, her essays reveal a surprisingly sharp tongue, possibly due to her high aesthetic sense, and her love for food. This is where Mari Mori spent most of her day, writing manuscripts, enjoying tea, and was considered a sacred place for her fans, who come from all over the country. The elderly owner guided me to Mari's seat. It was a bright and cozy seat by the window. I ordered: - Honey Toast (with corn potage soup) - Coffee (I forgot the exact price, but it was around 1100 yen for both) The thick bread had cuts filled with plenty of honey and butter, which was delicious. The coffee had a mild aroma. The owner showed me clippings and shared stories from the past, providing excellent service that made me very happy. It was a rare and precious experience. There were local regulars and deep coffee shop enthusiasts, attracting various people to the shop.

Established 57 years ago! The master is 87 years old! As I mentioned last year, full operation is becoming difficult. During the summer period, we will be operating irregularly for a while. Some menu items may be simplified, so it is recommended to call ahead if you plan to visit the restaurant. We offer blended coffee (520 yen) and iced coffee (570 yen). On Sundays, we are open until 5 pm (for now). On hot days, we recommend trying our "cream soda" made with ice cream, or our "coffee anmitsu" which is topped with coffee instead of black honey!

The Vienna Coffee for ¥750 was popular and delicious with whipped cream on top. It was not too sweet, had a rich coffee flavor, and was cold and creamy. The staff asked if I wanted them to add sweetness to the coffee, but I declined. It had a nice aroma and was very tasty.

From July 9th (Friday) to July 11th (Sunday), the coffee shop "Setagaya Coffee Jashumon" will be open as usual. Please check Twitter or Instagram for business hours after that. This long-established coffee shop, founded 56 years ago, is run by a master who is getting up in age and finding it tough to keep up with full business hours. In the summer, you can enjoy the "Cream Soda" for 800 yen and experience the charm of this traditional coffee shop. The smoking area has been moved outside, so there is no longer a smoky atmosphere inside. The "Anmitsu Coffee" for 800 yen, a fusion of red beans, coffee, and ice cream, is a must-try. Although there are similar options elsewhere now, the one here is exceptional. A cup of blended coffee or Americano costs 520 yen, while an iced coffee is 570 yen. This is a place where you can relax and unwind, and I hope it continues to thrive.

In 2020, the cafe I visited the most was a retro-themed space that may seem strange to first-time visitors. Established 56 years ago, "Setagaya Jashumon" has a unique atmosphere where even famous people have frequented. There is a seat known as the "Mori Mari seat" where Mori Mari, the daughter of writer Mori Ōgai, used to sit and drink tea. Coffee classics like "Blend" and "American" are available, along with the popular "Anmitsu Coffee" that often attracts media attention. Despite being sometimes crowded with regulars, the cafe has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. You can also get a cultural map created by the "Kitazawa River Cultural Heritage Preservation Society" at the cafe. I look forward to visiting again this year.

I visited the famous coffee shop, Jazoumon, for the first time, which has been a long-standing challenge. I ordered the Jazoumon blend (520 yen). To be honest, the coffee was light with a hint of acidity, somewhere between Fuguren and Kei Coffee, and it was a wonderful coffee that suited my taste perfectly. It was very delicious. Unfortunately, the shop is dominated by elderly regular customers, including the staff. It is difficult for newcomers to enter, and the atmosphere inside the shop is noisy. It has become more like a local salon. Well, as long as the owner tolerates it, newcomers like me cannot really complain. I simply enjoyed the coffee in peace and left the shop. Thank you for the meal.

Setagaya-ku, Daita, Tokyo. "Jashumon" is not a cult or secret society, despite the suspicious name of the cafe (laughs). It is a long-established cafe that always comes up when talking about cafes. Its history began near Kokubunji Station on the Chuo Line. Former sailor and magician Taketoshi Nawa started operating in Kichijoji just after the war, and then moved to Kokubunji. Each store is not a chain, but individually run by magician friends. The conditions for starting a shop are, first, being a magician. Second, not making money. The name of the shop is taken from the favorite book of Mr. Nawa, the first master of the shop, which is a poetry collection called "Jashumon" by Hakushu Kitahara. The master of Jashumon in Setagaya, Mr. Sakudo, was a regular customer at the Kokubunji store. Mr. Sakudo is actually quite remarkable, as he was a disciple of the first generation Inada Tengo (the current Princess Tengo is the second generation). Last year, he fell seriously ill and, due to his age in his 80s, he is no longer performing magic, but he used to show off his skills to customers who visited the store. I wanted to see that (*´-`) Correction: Even now, if he feels like it, he will show it to you. As of October 2017, Jashumon has 6 stores in Ogikubo, Setagaya, Shimoda, Odawara, Ishida, and Takaoka. The Kokubunji and Seiseki Sakuragaoka stores have closed due to the passing of each master (。゚Д゚。). By the way, the Seiseki Sakuragaoka store is said to be the model for the Earth Shop in the Ghibli movie "Whisper of the Heart" (there are various theories). The master of the Ogikubo store also passed away, but his wife has taken over. The store in Setagaya is quietly located in a residential area about a 15-minute walk from Shimo-Kitazawa Station on the Odakyu Line and Keio Inokashira Line. The first floor of a brick house that has been renovated. When you open the door, you will be surprised (°▽°) It's a full-blown Jashumon world. The master, Mr. Sakudo, has a great spirit of service and explained each of the antiques displayed throughout the store. From famous people like Misora Hibari to enka-related items, automatic fly catchers, jukeboxes from the early Showa period, Kirishitan stepping stones, Maria Kannon, matchlock guns, and cloisonné made by his wife... The list goes on and on, so I'll stop here (^o^;) Many celebrities have visited, including the daughter of Ogai Mori, Mari Mori, and Niji Kiyokawa... There are so many, so I'll stop here (^o^;) On this day, there were only two customers, me and two local regular ladies, so I had a one-on-one with the master. So I heard various stories (*´∀`)♪ About the history of Jashumon, the changes in Shimo-Kitazawa, and episodes related to the movie "Beyond the Boundary" released in 2015, although I haven't seen it yet (I was mistaken for a fan on a pilgrimage to a sacred place f(^_^;) It was over in just over an hour. When the daughter (daughter-in-law)? and the wife, who attends daycare, returned, I left the store. It was fun (v^-゜)♪ ◆Today's order◆ Jashumon Tomato Juice 600 yen Rare Cheesecake (set price) 380 yen Finally, the tomato juice is recommended (^^)b "Anmitsu Coffee" is also popular♪ You can only drink it here. The original brand of Jashumon, made with only tomatoes and salt. It has a rich and solid taste. I am Count Dracula himself (*ノω・*)テヘ On the way out, I was given an empty bottle as a souvenir ( ̄▽ ̄) If you like antiques, classic cafes, magic, enka music, storytelling, or "Beyond the Boundary," I recommend itヽ(*´▽)ノ♪ *Due to the master's advanced age and rest period, there may be temporary closures or changes in business hours. It is recommended to call in advance if you are coming from a distant place. #Sekiwake #Automatic fly catcher #Magician #Movie setting #Pilgrimage to a sacred place #Can only go now #Antique lover #Jashumon #Toshigami Jimo #Cafe #Tomato juice #Cake #Again

The otherworldly café featured in Beyond the Boundary serves exquisite Vienna coffee. The aftertaste is remarkably clean and the ambiance holds immeasurable value that cannot be bought with money.

Anmitsu coffee and Morimari tea were delicious. The mama talked a lot and the atmosphere with local customers was not very calm. I got the signatures of Matsu and Banana.

In the season of cherry blossoms, the nostalgic atmosphere of the Jazoumon is delightful with its antique world. In the back room, there is a jukebox playing music by Misora Hibari, giving off a Showa-era aura. The owner kindly played the record player for me, and showed me the different needles. I enjoyed coffee and rare cheesecake, a pure and classic cafe menu. Despite the owner being elderly, they are knowledgeable and enjoyable to talk to. It's a place where you can quietly close the door and smile to yourself while listening to nostalgic stories about Jazoumon from various places.

Category: [Tokyo] Fast Food The portion of the doria was surprisingly unsatisfying... I entered with a feeling of wanting something simple to eat while drinking coffee and smoking. Jashumon Setagaya Branch. If the items in this store were featured on a certain TV Tokyo program, how much would they all cost? It might be a treasure trove comparable to the mysterious Boys and Girls Museum. The store has a gacha-gacha vibe, but kind elderly couple create a slow-paced atmosphere. By the way, the eldest son is said to run a restaurant called Auberge Restaurant Potatoes in Shirahama, Izu. Grilled rice balls and fried chicken for 650 yen. Surprisingly, the coffee was delicious. I felt like I wanted to come back here and explore again.

In the area around Shimokitazawa, my favorite places are "Vol de Fleur" and recently "Shoku Bu". I go almost every week to "Setagaya Jashumon". They serve a tea called "Mori Mari TEA" which is a recreation of the tea that was loved by Mori Ogai's eldest daughter. I had it straight at first, and then with milk for the second cup. There are also parks named after literary figures, but Mori Mari remains at Jashumon. The Viennese coffee, American coffee, and blends all have a pleasant taste. It's a tradition to look at antiques while discussing deep topics about Setagaya.

Setagaya Jazoumon. In the residential area of Daikyocho, there are a few dining options. Although it doesn't face the street, there is a theater right in front, so it gets crowded on performance days. It also serves as the office for the "Kitazawa River Cultural Heritage Preservation Society," slowly upgrading the old maps. This upgrade is also something to look forward to. Of course, it's a café, so it's a place to come for coffee, but the unique stories here are interesting. The map reflects the love for the Setagaya Daikyo area. It also marks the places affected by the war fires, making you ponder. You can also see photos of post-war Shimokitazawa taken by the GHQ. I'm interested in urban planning and buildings myself, so I enjoy chatting with the regulars here. The coffee and cake set is 900 yen, a fair price in a time when overly expensive coffee is rampant. It's recommended to spend time here quietly reading a book.

Life is unpredictable. This realization has hit me harder than ever before, thanks to my visit to "Jazoumon" in Setagaya. The origin of the Jazoumon group can be traced back to the master of the original store in Kokuritsu, who was a former sailor and magician. The group started when like-minded individuals, including fellow magicians, opened cafes under the Jazoumon name. To become the head of a Jazoumon store, one must adhere to two ironclad rules: the business must not be profitable, and the person must be a magician. My visit to the Setagaya Jazoumon was a result of a chance encounter with a review by Mairebi. This small miracle led me to a unique space filled with history and stories. The decor, including lamps and muskets hanging from the ceiling, transported me through various eras. The most striking feature was the "fumie," a tragic symbol from history. The master of the store, a charming elderly man, explained the history and showed me a notebook where customers write their thoughts. I ordered the "anmitsu coffee," a creation inspired by the master's love for anpan and coffee. The blend of strong coffee, sweet red bean paste, and ice was a delightful dessert. This place, where time and people blend seamlessly, holds a special charm that resonated with me.

Residential area in the city, before it is buried in the shade of the urban jungle of grass and leaves... there is no way it can be buried, this cafe "Jashumon" is here to steal the show, with its unique charm. Do you know Jashumon? The head of the Setagaya Jashumon, whom I spoke to today, wants to introduce you to this cafe, which started about 60 years ago. It was started by a sailor who came ashore, collecting antiques from around the world and selling them with a unique coffee brewing method. One by one, people were captivated by this cafe, and each of them started their own cafes, all inspired by Jashumon. Jashumon is not a chain, but a collection of cafes run by like-minded individuals who share the same values. Jashumon has two iron rules: not to make a profit, and to be a magician. This is because the founder, National, was also a talented magician. The Setagaya head of Jashumon, who is currently in charge, was also trained by the first-generation magician, Hikita Tenko. The atmosphere inside the cafe is not just old, but also unique. The attic may have someone walking around, the numerous wall clocks may show different times, and someone may be sleeping in a chair. Of course, this is not the case, but the unique atmosphere of the "antique mysterious literary space" makes you feel like it is. The head of the cafe is so friendly and welcoming that even I, a shy person, ended up talking for an hour. The cafe is filled with items like a 450-year-old musket on the wall, authentic stepping stones, and a genuine statue of Maria Kannon. Jashumon was the name for Christianity in the Edo period. The cafe also serves a unique dessert called "Anmitsu Coffee," which is a blend of coffee and sweet red bean paste. The bitter taste of coffee and the sweetness of the red bean paste go well together, especially when served with slightly firm homemade agar. The cafe also has a branch in Ogikubo, which is run by the wife of the previous head. The cafe is filled with graffiti left by literary figures from the past. The head of the cafe even performed a magic trick for me before I left. He gave me a matchbox from the original Jashumon cafe, saying, "It's no longer there, so take it with you." I didn't ask why, as not revealing the secret is part of the magic. This was part of the "Residential Area Series." The cafe was started in this residential area because it was surrounded by many student dormitories, and the cafe became a gathering place for young students. The head of the cafe enjoyed interacting with the young people who frequented the cafe, rather than dealing with customers from the station. That's why he started the cafe in a residential area. There's something special about cafes that start in such areas. Oh, by the way, this Setagaya Jashumon was featured in an anime five years ago, and the head of the cafe showed me the anime files. He seemed to explain it in an anime-oriented way, but now I understand. It seems like he enjoys talking to young people.
