I made a reservation a month in advance after failing to secure one several times before. Upon my first visit, the restaurant was filled with strips of paper listing the dishes available that day. I ordered the following dishes: Sugar tomato salad, Taro root tempura with raw seven spice, Vinegared mackerel, Iberico pork hot pot with miso, Udo and rapeseed flower with miso, Grilled amberjack, Small fish tempura bowl with steamed sea bream and red rice, topped with chopped pickles. Most dishes were priced under 1000 yen, offering a wide variety of carefully prepared dishes. The chef, who seemed to be the sole cook, was focused on cooking while family members assisted. Although the chef didn't engage in conversation, their dedication to serving delicious food was palpable, making it a delightful dining experience.

My former colleagues from my company live half the time at a villa in Kyoto and occasionally invite me to good restaurants they find. This time, although nothing felt particularly special, it was a deeply satisfying restaurant. It was bustling with locals. It's a nice place to relax without feeling the need to be on edge in Kyoto, and the small dishes were also good. We toasted with barley shochu and soda, and from the appetizers... "Chilled tofu topped with large leaf and chopped green onions" was refreshing. Since there were four of us, we each ordered two dishes. "Sesame tofu (incl. tax ¥638)" was a bit different from what I had imagined, being more viscous. "Smelt tempura with tade vinegar (incl. tax ¥936)"... Since it's summer in Kyoto, we had to have some smelt. The bitterness of the liver was also refreshingly delicious. "Winter melon and aburaage kudzu stew (incl. tax ¥660)"... A piping hot kudzu stew. A comforting taste. "Grilled yellowtail with yuzu (incl. tax ¥858)"... "Man'nenji chili pepper (incl. tax ¥748)"... Plenty of bonito flakes and a soy sauce flavor, the taste was as expected and did not disappoint. It was delicious. "Eel and burdock yam stew (incl. tax ¥1100)"... It was brought in a simmering pot. This stew, with a slightly sweet broth, also did not disappoint. The crunchy texture of the burdock yam was delicious. "Horse mackerel kosode sushi (incl. tax ¥1100)"... It had Japanese pepper sandwiched in between, giving it a nice flavor. I was torn between this and smelt ochazuke for the finishing touch, but this was also refreshing and delicious. With drinks and food, it was just under ¥5000 per person... Sometimes it's nice to eat at fancy restaurants, but somehow, I'm happy with places like this on a regular basis.

It's a bit of a walk from Sanjo Station, crossing the Kamo River. As you get further from Kawaramachi, it becomes quite a quiet area. Since I was in Kyoto, I wanted to have some delicious Japanese food, so I chose this restaurant. It was the right choice. The restaurant has just the right size with a counter and two raised tatami seating areas. The quiet owner calmly prepares the dishes. It was nice to enjoy delicious dishes in a calm atmosphere. - The appetizer was dried daikon radish with black shichimi pepper as a nice accent. The daikon was very tender and soaked in the flavor of the broth. It was so delicious! - The sesame tofu had a firm texture and was rich and tasty. - The seared yellowtail belly was amazing. - The simmered dish of shrimp shinjo and turnip from Seigoin was the best. The turnip cooked in a gentle broth was delicious. - The tempura of spring vegetables offered a bitterness and nice aroma. - The Kujyo green onion udon had a great flavor of green onion and broth. - The rice with salmon roe and okaka (bonito flakes) was tasty, with a strong flavor of the salmon roe. With three drinks, the total bill for two people was less than 6000 yen. Payment is cash only, but the cost performance was so good that it was surprising. Thank you for the meal!

I went to a quiet and calm restaurant called Manbou on a weekday night around 8:30 pm, and it was the first day after they had finished serving for the night. I saw some empty seats at the counter, so I casually walked in by myself. Since it was a highly rated restaurant on Tabelog, I wondered if the seats were reserved for customers. When I asked if there was a seat available for one person, they kindly welcomed me in. The service was excellent, and I was able to relax and enjoy my drink at the counter even though I was alone. It was cold, so I ordered some warm sake. The lineup of shochu on the menu showed good taste. The warm sake was served in a smaller size but seemed more than a regular cup. It was delightful. The tokkuri (sake bottle) was cute. The meal started with a refreshing spinach ohitashi (boiled spinach in soy sauce) as an appetizer. Then, I ordered sashimi of sea bream, fresh fu (wheat gluten), and deep-fried eggplant. The portions were sufficient, and the dishes were comforting and moist. Everything was delicious. Thank you for the meal. I will definitely come back.

I went based on a friend's recommendation. Every dish was delicious and made my chopsticks move non-stop. It feels like a chef is cooking just for the three of us, as the dishes come out one by one. The wait for the food is worth it, and you can enjoy the time at the counter. The food was so good that I kept adding more items to my order. I dined alone this time, but next time I want to come with someone to share the experience.

I don't really want to share this gem, the best find of this Kyoto trip! There are 7 counter seats and 2 small raised tables for 4 people each. The chef is busy preparing dishes alone. The appetizer is dried fish, cucumber, and grated radish. The vinegar is mild. Oh, my expectations are rising. The first order is sashimi of yellowtail, yummy, it's good. The steamed egg custard with conger eel and matsutake mushrooms was only 850 yen each? So cheap! You can't miss ordering this during this season. It has a good broth and rich flavor. The conger eel and green onion tempura is beautifully garnished with paprika. The fried dishes are skillfully done too! The smoked Pacific saury is deeply smoked. It goes well with alcohol! The simmered head of sea bream is mildly sweet, just how my husband likes it. I'll definitely come back here next time. There is a wide variety of rice dishes for the end of the meal. I shared a bottle of beer with my husband (I drank most of it), and the total was 8,420 yen for the two of us. It's no wonder there are many young customers here, it has a hidden gem vibe, like a MUJI store. The floor staff, who take good care of customers, make up for the quiet chef with their smiles and gentle atmosphere.

A must-visit Japanese restaurant with great value for money that requires a reservation! Invited by my friend in Kyoto who said, "I have a place you absolutely must try!" The entrance had an exclusive vibe, not somewhere you could just walk into. Grateful for the invitation. Everything I tried was delicious, but personally, I recommend dishes with rich broth. The fried wheat gluten and eggplant absorb the broth completely. The sliced raw mackerel is seared before being cut, creating a unique contrast in texture between the skin and flesh, which is interesting. The roasted duck is sliced thickly, allowing you to savor the flavors slowly. Please note they only accept cash.

No matter which dish you choose, you can feel the season in each bite. The delicious ingredients and preparation methods are wonderful, and the charming tableware enhances the dishes. The restaurant is clean, and you can tell that every customer is here to enjoy the food. Unlike many traditional Kyoto restaurants that don't list prices on the menu, which can be unsettling, this place has prices clearly displayed for transparent billing. I believe enjoying the dishes would be even better with the option to pair them with alcohol.

Located in front of Kyoto City Hall, the small Japanese restaurant "Ippin Ryori Takakura." I decided to casually go for a drink that day and searched for a restaurant without a reservation. I took a chance and called "Ippin Ryori Takakura" in the vicinity of Kyoto City Hall. I had tried to make a reservation several times before but always ended up being turned down due to scheduling conflicts, so it was lucky that there was an available seat this time! A small restaurant I want to make my regular spot. The interior has a calm atmosphere. I don't want to be in a noisy place but rather enjoy the leisurely flow of time with the food. Calling a place like this my "regular spot" makes me feel like an adult. There are counter seats and two sets of table seats for four people on a raised platform. Since the counter seats were fully booked, we were seated at a table. Various carefully prepared dishes. The appetizer consisted of stir-fried garlic chives, bean sprouts, and fried tofu. Delicious broth. "Shime-saba" (cured mackerel) for 950 yen - firm and high-quality mackerel. Not too sour, with a good sweetness from the fat. Refreshing finish with grated daikon radish and ginger. Beautifully presented with lotus root and bell pepper. "Yaki-celery no Tosazu-zuke" (vinegared and grilled celery) for 400 yen - celery lightly grilled to retain its crispy texture while bringing out the sweetness. The slightly sweet Tosazu vinegar and the umami of bonito flakes are exquisite. "Takakura no Goma-dofu" (sesame tofu) for 580 yen - rich sesame tofu enveloped in the gentleness of sesame. A unique texture similar to mochi with a thick viscosity. "Buta Hire Katsu Dai" (large pork fillet cutlet) for 1150 yen - surprisingly, the pork cutlet is a popular menu item. The pork fillet, cooked slowly, is tender. The demi-glace sauce is gently sweet. A hearty portion of rice, but a sophisticated pork cutlet that suits the atmosphere. It's also nice to have plenty of cabbage, radish sprouts, onions, and vegetables on the side. The ochazuke (rice with tea) looked delicious too, but we settled the bill around this point. Not flashy, but a confidently recommended restaurant. For other menu items, please visit the reviewer's page on Tabelog. If you're looking for a date spot, check out their website. They also have a blog and a Facebook page. They are on Instagram as well! #Mach's recommended food.

On December 19, 2020, in the magazine Hanako, gourmet writer Mr. P recommended this restaurant for those visiting Kyoto, so we made a reservation a month in advance. We stayed at ACEHOTEL, so it took us about 20 minutes to walk from Karasuma Oike. It's about a 5-minute walk from Kyoto City Hall Station. When we arrived, despite being first-time visitors, we were seated at the counter furthest back, perhaps because we had made an early reservation. The menu signs were displayed on the wall, offering reasonably priced dishes with ample portions for two people. We enjoyed draft beer, warmed sake, chilled sake, spinach ohitashi, Takakura sesame tofu, bonito sashimi, fried sweet potato stems and turnip with crab ankake, fried eggplant in broth, shiso and fried sweet potato with fresh chili pepper, ankimo with shirataki and kikurage mushroom, and noodles with fried tofu and green onions. The hostess even commented, "You've eaten a lot," as we had indulged quite a bit. The total came to about ¥5,000 per person including tax. Every dish was delicate and made with fresh vegetables, providing a satisfying crunch and accented with shichimi spice. The flavors were truly impressive, with a rich dashi broth. It was the first time we had such a satisfying meal mainly consisting of vegetables and fish. It was surprisingly affordable for such delicious food. The plates were lovely, the restaurant was clean, and the atmosphere was both invigorating and relaxing. It was a wonderful dining experience.

It was a restaurant I passed by on my way home from the office, but it was always crowded, so I had been wanting to try it once. However, since it was not a very big restaurant, I felt hesitant to go alone, and six months passed. But when I finally mustered up the courage to go, everything from the appetizers to the main dishes was delicious. Each dish was also visually appealing, and I couldn't help but take photos.

A warm and welcoming traditional Japanese restaurant serving meticulous, delicate, and sincere dishes. The interior may not be modern with its old-fashioned design, but the food is beautiful. The entrance with a grapevine tree shows a good sense of style, and the quiet jazz music playing in the background creates a chic and cozy atmosphere.

Whenever I go, I feel safe and secure, and there are many traditional yet innovative dishes prepared. It's not just about enjoying the food, but also the small details that change every time I revisit, making it enjoyable. And above all, the cost is more affordable than any other Japanese restaurant in Kyoto... haha The head chef, who loves Takakura Ken, is very charming, so I'd like to take a photo with him next time I visit.

After a long stay in Kyoto, we made a reservation well in advance for a special dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday during a business trip with my boss, who was introduced to us by a friend who is familiar with dining spots in Kyoto. It was our first time at this restaurant and being in Kyoto, we were a bit nervous. However, with three people, we were able to order a variety of dishes which was a plus. As expected from a recommended spot with good value by our knowledgeable friend, we were all very satisfied with the traditional Japanese cuisine. The dishes were all beautifully presented, and the background music added to the chic atmosphere. Next time, we might try sitting at the counter while enjoying drinks. We got a bit distracted by ordering and chatting, so we didn't take many photos, but after the appetizers, we had seasonal dishes like simmered bamboo shoots, pickled mackerel, sakura shrimp tempura, and wild vegetable tempura, along with a rare cilantro salad for Kyoto cuisine, all of which were delicious. Both my boss from Germany and I were surprised by the squid sashimi. It was from Hyogo prefecture, and the thick squid seemed to have been prepared well; it wasn't chewy at all, but had a great texture that melted in your mouth. It was an excellent dish in terms of ingredients and taste. We ordered udon noodles, and my wife silently finished her bowl. She usually skips dinner, but she couldn't resist the delicious meal, saying "It's superbly delicious" with a big smile on her face. We ended the meal with sukiyaki-style beef and tomato. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful. When you eat it, the acidity of the tomato and the sweetness of the egg mix together, spreading happiness in your mouth. The only downside was that they only accepted cash. Even though it may not be a place where many foreign tourists visit, it would be great to see them introduce cashless payment options, maybe with a small fee added, to promote cashless transactions. It was a great experience. With this kind of value, you could enjoy various dishes by yourself or with someone else. If we have the chance to visit Kyoto again, we will definitely make a reservation to return.
