During another business trip to Kyoto, I couldn't predict the timing, so I couldn't get a reservation at Yoshidayama Seseri or Okonomiyaki Yoshino. When I called this place in a hurry, they said they could fit me in. I rushed to take the train to get there after hearing a recommendation from a friend about Hoshinoya. The tasting of 7 different rice polishing ratios at Kaname was interesting (they only had Kaname sake available). This place is not one to travel far for, but it's convenient for when you want to casually drink near your accommodation. It's not a bad place, but I don't quite understand why it's so highly praised; maybe it hasn't reached its full potential yet. The craft beer of the month was a golden ale for 600 yen. When I asked a regular next to me for a recommendation, she suggested the liver. She also informed me that the menu is attached to the wall with magnets. Although the portions are generous, you can order a half portion. I opted for a half portion of the medium-fatty tuna for 950 yen, which turned out to be 750 yen. The prices are somewhat higher than expected. The taste of the tuna was delicious, and the portion was satisfying. I should have ordered the full portion. The prices for items like yakitori liver (380 yen), gizzard (280 yen), seseri (salt or ponzu, 280 yen), salted thigh (tare, 280 yen), and bonjiri (280 yen) were reasonable, but the pickled cabbage (380 yen) didn't arrive promptly, so I skipped it and proceeded to pay. The bonjiri was the most delicious, with a good balance of sweetness and acidity. While the other items were tasty, you can find cheaper and higher-quality options, especially for liver, in areas like Noge. There are probably other similar places in Kyoto, but I'm not sure. The Kaname 7-taste sake tasting set was 1200 yen, with rice polishing ratios ranging from 40% to 100% (including brown rice). The taste ranged from burnt sugar-like bitterness (90%) to slight acidity (80%), with a pleasant balance of sweetness and acidity. I understand why it's the most popular. The flavors progressed to a clearer taste with less acidity (60%), more wine-like acidity (50%), and finally a strong acidity (40%). The skewers (1500 yen), drinks (1800 yen), and half portion of tuna (750 yen) totaled 4050 yen, but the bill came to 4480 yen. They accept card payments. It's unclear from the bill if tax is excluded or if there's a seating charge. There was no appetizer served. The friendly staff work hard, creating a good atmosphere for drinking. The service is slow, so it's best to go with extra time.
