I made a reservation using the national travel support system at OMO3 Kyoto Toji, the fourth facility of Hoshino Resorts' OMO series that I am trying to visit all 15 facilities across the country. I left home around noon and took the Keihan Limited Express to get off at Shichijo Station, crossed the Shichijo Ohashi Bridge over the Kamo River, and walked 850m west to have lunch at "Yamamoto Manbo," a teppanyaki restaurant founded in 1948 known for its Kyoto-style okonomiyaki called "Manbo-yaki." The restaurant has moved 100m north from its previous location across from the popular ramen shop "Daiichi Asahi Main Store" due to public housing redevelopment in May 2020. It is only a few minutes' walk from Kyoto Station, so both locals and tourists visit frequently. The interior of the restaurant has a large L-shaped counter with a teppan and three tables with six seats each. I arrived at 12:40 pm on a weekday and was seated immediately at the corner of the counter. I ordered a draft beer for 550 yen, grilled sand gizzard for 550 yen, and the specialty "Manbo-yaki" all-inclusive special for 1,150 yen, which includes beef tendon, squid, offal, oil residue, egg, green onion, and soba sweet and spicy sauce with a half-cooked egg. While waiting for the sand gizzard to grill, I was served the draft beer and made a toast before enjoying the crispy sand gizzard seasoned with salt and pepper. After about 10 minutes, the famous "Manbo-yaki" was ready. The "Manbo-yaki" is made by stir-frying beef tendon in lard, pouring a batter made of wheat flour, adding various toppings such as bonito flakes, tempura bits, pickled radish, ginger, green onions, and squid, layering separately stir-fried cabbage with sauce, and stacking soba or udon noodles. Finally, finely chopped offal and oil residue are added, flipped, grilled, topped with an egg, brushed with sauce, and garnished with chopped green onions. I chose the luxurious version with all the toppings and requested a half-cooked egg. The sauce, a combination of sweet and spicy, can be chosen between sweet, sweet and spicy, and spicy. The thin soba noodles were chewy, with crispy parts, and the flavors of various toppings layered on top were delicious. After about an hour, I finished lunch and took a taxi to visit "Toji Temple" near the hotel. Thank you for the meal!

On a typical Friday at 7:20 PM, there was a wait of 3 groups (2 people each) ahead of us when we arrived. Two groups were seated early, so I thought we might wait around 30 minutes, but ended up waiting for an hour. We ordered manju-yaki, betayaki, and cider. Betayaki was really plain, haha. And it cost 1,100 yen? Not good value for money. The manju-yaki was just okay in terms of taste. Why is this place so popular?

I had monja-yaki and simmered beef tendon! The flavors were strong, so they paired perfectly with a lemon sour. The beef tendon was tender and fatty but not heavy, which was surprising. I wonder if the restaurant is family-owned? The service was very friendly and welcoming, creating a cozy atmosphere.

It is said to be a popular restaurant, but I arrived before 4 pm and was able to enter without waiting in line. The seats were only half full. There were counter seats surrounding the teppan grill and table seats, but since I was dining alone, I was seated at the counter without choosing. As soon as I sat down, the heat from the teppan grill in front of me was intense! It was a scorching hot day outside, over 30 degrees Celsius, and the moment I sat at the counter, I started sweating. It was the perfect environment to make me want to drink. I ordered the "manbo-yaki all-in special" (1,200 yen). The egg was half-cooked and I chose a sweet and savory sauce. At first, I ordered a spicy sauce, but the owner warned me, "It's quite spicy," so I changed it to sweet and savory. The owner cooks everything, so I thought it might take a while, and I quickly added enoki mushroom yaki (400 yen) to my order. Since all the other customers were drinking beer, I was tempted to join them, but I had work later, so I managed with carbonated water (300 yen). As expected, the enoki mushroom yaki came out as an appetizer. The seasoning was all up to the owner, and there were no condiments on the counter. The enoki mushrooms were seasoned with a slightly soy sauce-based flavor, making it a perfect snack while waiting for the manbo-yaki. And with the heat from the teppan grill in front of me making me thirsty, the carbonated water went down smoothly. Without waiting for the manbo-yaki, I finished the carbonated water. Then came the manbo-yaki. It was like yakisoba cooked with a thin layer of okonomiyaki batter, and as a yakisoba lover, I quite enjoyed it. I might even prefer this over thicker okonomiyaki batter. Since it was continuously cooked on the teppan grill, the yakisoba was initially loose, but towards the end, it became crispy. This made it a great snack. Next time, I'll try eating it with beer. I was also drawn to the udon that the customer next to me ordered, so maybe I'll try that too.

I went on a gourmet trip using the Seishun 18 ticket. "Yamamoto Manbo" is the birthplace of Mambo yaki, located about a 10-minute walk from Kyoto Station and opens at 10 am. On a Saturday, 10 minutes before opening, I was waiting along with two young Korean women and one man. While Osaka-style okonomiyaki and Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki are famous nationwide, I learned that in Kyoto, there is Betayaki and the evolved Mambo yaki. I ordered the Mambo yaki All-in Special (1200 yen). Basically, it is a layered okonomiyaki like the Hiroshima style, but the batter contains meat, squid, offal, fried tempura scraps, shaved bonito, pickled radish, green onion, red pickled ginger, etc. Cabbage and soba noodles are stir-fried separately and then combined with the batter. The batter is poured over again and flipped. The soba noodles are thin noodles specially ordered. The Mambo yaki turned out to be a slightly lighter Modern yaki compared to the Hiroshima style, with differences in sauce types, ingredient placement, and cooking method.

It was just before 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. I thought it might be impossible because the Shinkansen leaves after 8:00 p.m., but I decided to try anyway. Luckily, there was only one group of four people waiting. We were seated shortly after and ordered a highball (500 yen) and a manbo-yaki (1200 yen). Initially, I wanted to order the small size (1100 yen), but they said it was quite small so I opted for the regular size. I chose udon, half-cooked eggs, and a sweet and spicy sauce. I was told the spicy sauce was quite hot, so I decided against it. I usually don't like okonomiyaki with thick dough, like in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, but the manbo-yaki here was delicious! The ingredients were all small, but they blended well with the dough, udon, and sauce, creating a harmonious and tasty combination. Despite the thin dough, the presence of the udon was prominent, but the dough also made its presence known. The sauce had a perfect balance of sweetness and spiciness. The staff at the restaurant were very friendly, and I left feeling completely satisfied after enjoying a great dinner!

I came across this place too many times on my timeline and decided to visit. I really enjoyed the food. Calpis Water for 300 yen, non-alcoholic beer for 500 yen, grilled eggplant for 400 yen, hormone stew for 600 yen, manbo-yaki with everything for 1200 yen, petayaki with everything for 1100 yen. The Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki here doesn't have cabbage in it, which is perfect for me. The manbo-yaki has yakisoba inside, while the petayaki doesn't. The meat and shrimp are finely chopped, enhancing the flavor. You can choose from three types of sauce - spicy, medium spicy, and sweet. Even the medium spicy was quite hot. It may sound like a child's composition, but it was really delicious. The high counter without a backrest was a bit tough though. Thank you for the meal.

A delicious restaurant within walking distance from Kyoto Station✨ Luckily I had a reservation, but those without had to wait outside. My favorite dish was the okonomiyaki! I ordered it with a sweet and savory sauce and a half-cooked egg. The sauce was so delicious - it was addictive! I also tried the monjayaki with soba noodles, also with a sweet and savory sauce and a half-cooked egg. The yakisoba with the same sauce was good too, but maybe a bit too sweet for my taste! The rolled omelette was also delicious✨ The chicken tenderloin and squid were tasty as well✨ If this restaurant was nearby, I would visit every week! I wonder if there are any similar restaurants in Tokyo - I really want to eat there again!

We visited just before the lunch rush. The restaurant had just opened and there was only one customer. Yamamoto Manbo used to be located in Takabashi, but moved to Kyoto Geidai Kensetsu in 2020. My friend and I ordered both the Manbo yaki soba and udon, as well as the yakisoba. The udon was chewy and delicious. We also loved the soba version with its thin noodles. The sauce was sweet and savory. Thank you for the meal.

The opening hours are perfect for brunch, so I decided to try the manbo-yaki. You can choose between udon or soba, well-cooked, half-cooked, or raw egg. I chose soba with raw egg and a sweet and salty sauce. The crispy soba paired really well with a lemon sour. Choosing the raw egg is the best because you can adjust the cooking to your liking on the hot plate. The rolled omelette was fluffy. The pickled ginger did a great job. While the grilled hormone seems popular, it was hard to find. The vegetables absorbed the fat from the hormone. The chopped hachinosu was crispy and makes a great snack. The squid cartilage is also a perfect snack. The simmered beef tendon and konjac makes you crave for shochu.

On weekdays at 17:20, there was no wait. I had the hormone yaki (¥600), beef tendon stew (¥600), and manbo yaki (¥1,200) after a long time. I still don't understand what "manbo" means, as there was no explanation at the restaurant. The yakisoba had a wonderful crispy texture, similar to Hita yakisoba, but with thin noodles that were quite unique. The side dishes like the hormone yaki were also delicious.

I returned from Shiga to Kyoto and stopped by Yamamoto Manbo for lunch before catching the Shinkansen. It had been decades since I last visited in June. It was a Sunday afternoon around 1:30, and luckily I didn't have to wait to get a seat. I wanted to try a few appetizers before diving into the signature Manbo-yaki, but I only had about an hour. So, I quickly ordered a large bottle of beer and the Manbo-yaki with all toppings (spicy, soba, half-cooked) and the yakisoba with all toppings (medium spicy). However, it turned out that most of the customers had just arrived, and I ended up waiting for my food for over 40 minutes. In the end, I had to eat in a rush before catching my train. My wife said, "It tasted good, but I couldn't really savor it because we were in a hurry." She's right. I made a mistake in estimating my time. These kinds of places are meant to be enjoyed slowly, savoring the food while waiting for it to be cooked. The Manbo-yaki style, come to think of it, was similar to the one I tried recently at Issen Youshoku, where noodles are incorporated into the dish. I wonder if the original owner got the idea from the one-sen Western food served at the old candy store... Just my random thoughts. The place is still popular, with many foreign visitors. It's hard to get a reservation on weekends and holidays, but weekdays are usually okay. If you really want to try it, I recommend making a reservation.

I came to Kyoto. When in Kansai, I always crave okonomiyaki. There is a famous shop near Kyoto Station called "Yamamoto Manbo" that serves a specialty called Manbo-yaki. I ordered the following menu items at the L-shaped counter. It has a welcoming atmosphere even for solo diners. ■What I ate - Manbo-yaki (Special with all toppings) ¥1200 - Betayaki (¥1100) - Specialty Hormone-yaki (¥600) You can see them cooking right in front of you, which adds to the lively atmosphere. The food arrived in about 20 minutes. First, the Hormone-yaki. At first, I thought the portion was small, but it was incredibly delicious. The flavor of the hormone was outstanding. They must be using high-quality ingredients. And then, the Manbo-yaki. An okonomiyaki with meat, squid, tempura scraps, hormone, egg, green onions, and your choice of soba or udon. I chose the sweet and spicy sauce. The crispy texture of the batter was excellent, and the ingredients were full of flavor. The Betayaki was also delicious, but I preferred the Manbo-yaki. Definitely try it when you visit Kyoto! On my Instagram account "Nonaru Danshi no Tokyo Lunch Meshi" with 70,000 followers, I introduce delicious food from Tokyo and all over Japan!

Today, I visited Mr. Yamamoto's restaurant. I arrived a little after 10:00 AM when they opened, and I was the first customer. I sat at the counter and ordered the specialty dish, manbo yakisoba, and the famous grilled hormone. I asked for the egg to be half-cooked and the sauce to be sweet. The grilled hormone arrived first. The hormone was cut into small pieces, and I personally wished they were a bit bigger. The taste was flavorful with a good amount of salt and pepper. I also tried the manbo yakisoba. It was topped with green onions, which was nice. The portion size wasn't very big. The sauce was delicious and had a good flavor. I finished it in no time. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Founded in 1948, the renowned restaurant "Yamamoto Manbo" in Kyoto is known for its unique style of okonomiyaki, such as the "Manbo-yaki" and "Beta-yaki." Located just a 6-minute walk east of JR Kyoto Station, the restaurant is easily accessible for travelers. The nostalgic atmosphere inside, with its L-shaped counter and a few table seats, is perfect for enjoying a meal with friends, colleagues, or loved ones. The menu offers a variety of teppanyaki dishes, including "Manbo-yaki," "Beta-yaki," and yakisoba or yakiudon. The main teppan grill in the center of the restaurant allows customers to watch as their orders are cooked before being served directly to their table. The "Manbo-yaki" features a special wheat flour batter spread on the teppan, topped with ingredients like oil scraps, meat, squid, and offal, then combined with yakisoba and finished with egg and sauce. The "Beta-yaki" is similar but without noodles, resulting in a thinner, crispier texture. This Kyoto establishment has been recognized as one of the top okonomiyaki restaurants in Japan, making it a must-visit spot for tourists exploring the city.

【2023 Best Okonomiyaki Top 100】Located about a 5-minute walk from Kyoto Station. Our restaurant was established in 1948 and is the birthplace of Kyoto's "manbo-yaki." "Manbo-yaki" is a type of okonomiyaki that includes soba or udon noodles, which is slightly different from Modanyaki or Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. It is a thin okonomiyaki with noodles on top. We also offer other delicious teppan dishes that are affordable. I visited on a weekday after 3 pm and was able to enter smoothly. It's great that they are open all day, making it easy to visit. The service was also good. Since it was my first visit, I tried a variety of dishes. The "Manbo-yaki" for 1200 yen was a unique dish that was a mix between okonomiyaki and yakisoba. The crispy noodles were delicious. The "Betayaki" for 1100 yen was, well, interesting... it's all about the dough. If you think of it as a different type of dish, it's actually quite tasty. The portion size may be a bit small. We also tried other teppan dishes and yakisoba, all of which were delicious. It's nice to try Kyoto-style okonomiyaki like "Betayaki" and "Manbo-yaki" when in Kyoto. The fact that it's close to the station is also convenient. Thank you for the meal. I will definitely come back. ⭐️

I had lunch at this place that has been selected as one of the top 100 restaurants, which I had been curious about for a long time (*◕ᴗ◕*)♡ The shop originated in 1948 with the first generation owner who created the "manbo-yaki." The retro atmosphere of the shop is lovelyヾ(*´▽`*)ノ♡♡ Luckily, we were able to find seats after the customers left. The small shop was full. We shared the following dishes with three people: - Manbo-yaki all toppings: 1,200 yen - Betayaki all toppings: 1,100 yen What is manbo-yaki? It's like a soba-filled okonomiyaki. You can choose toppings such as egg (well-done/half-cooked/raw), yakisoba/udon, sauce (sweet, sweet and spicy, or spicy). We chose well-done, soba, and sweet and spicy. The all-toppings option includes meat, squid, oil cake, hormones, egg, green onions. Betayaki is apparently a type of okonomiyaki from Kyoto. I've only had okonomiyaki with lots of cabbage, so this was a new experience (◍´ꇴ`◍)♡♡ The sweet and spicy sauce was light and easy to eat♡♡ The crispy texture of the dough was delicious (●︎´∀︎`●︎)♡ I didn't expect the dough to be so thin, and even though we shared it among three people for dessert, we could have easily eaten one each. The chopped hormones added extra umami♡♡ Lots of green onions were also good( ♥︎ᴗ♥︎ )♡♡ The owner was very friendly. The staff provided excellent service (ˊᗜˋ*)♡ They only accept cash.

I made a reservation in advance and arrived at the restaurant at 5:30 pm on a weekday. By 6:00 pm, the restaurant was full. Those who didn't make a reservation were warned that they might have to wait for a while. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was mostly filled with salarymen, with a few Chinese tourists as well. The table seats were a bit noisy but not overly loud. There were two men, one young and one in his 50s or 60s, cooking okonomiyaki on the hot plate. Ordered items: - Manbo-yaki Special (soba) with half-cooked egg and sweet and spicy sauce for 1,200 yen - Manbo-yaki Special (udon) with raw egg and sweet sauce for 1,200 yen I tried both soba and udon. They were both filled with meat, squid, offal, egg, and green onions. The soba version had a strong and slightly spicy sauce, while the udon version had a sweet sauce that soaked into the chewy noodles. The dishes were flavorful without being too heavy, making it enjoyable to eat. Also tried the Betayaki with all the fillings for 1,100 yen. The thin and moist texture of the dish was complemented well by the combination of meat, squid, offal, egg. It was a great accompaniment to drinks and was very delicious.

This is a local restaurant in Kyoto. When you enter the store, most of the customers are regulars, and the staff's service is really good. It's about a 7-minute walk from Kyoto Station, and it seems like it's not well known to tourists yet, so we were able to get in right away. The prices are around 1200 yen for main dishes and 600 yen for side dishes, which is quite cheap compared to Tokyo. Without a doubt, it's delicious. I definitely want to go again.

A famous okonomiyaki restaurant within walking distance from Kyoto Station. I visited around 5 pm and it quickly became full shortly after I arrived. The menu is extensive with a variety of seafood and meat teppanyaki dishes, all served in small portions so you can try different kinds. I ordered the manbo-yaki soba and horumon-yaki, both of which were delicious. The head chef was off that day, so a young chef was cooking. I definitely want to come back when the head chef is there.
