kinako-anko
I made a reservation using the national travel support system at OMO3 Kyoto Toji, the fourth facility of Hoshino Resorts' OMO series that I am trying to visit all 15 facilities across the country. I left home around noon and took the Keihan Limited Express to get off at Shichijo Station, crossed the Shichijo Ohashi Bridge over the Kamo River, and walked 850m west to have lunch at "Yamamoto Manbo," a teppanyaki restaurant founded in 1948 known for its Kyoto-style okonomiyaki called "Manbo-yaki." The restaurant has moved 100m north from its previous location across from the popular ramen shop "Daiichi Asahi Main Store" due to public housing redevelopment in May 2020. It is only a few minutes' walk from Kyoto Station, so both locals and tourists visit frequently. The interior of the restaurant has a large L-shaped counter with a teppan and three tables with six seats each. I arrived at 12:40 pm on a weekday and was seated immediately at the corner of the counter. I ordered a draft beer for 550 yen, grilled sand gizzard for 550 yen, and the specialty "Manbo-yaki" all-inclusive special for 1,150 yen, which includes beef tendon, squid, offal, oil residue, egg, green onion, and soba sweet and spicy sauce with a half-cooked egg. While waiting for the sand gizzard to grill, I was served the draft beer and made a toast before enjoying the crispy sand gizzard seasoned with salt and pepper. After about 10 minutes, the famous "Manbo-yaki" was ready. The "Manbo-yaki" is made by stir-frying beef tendon in lard, pouring a batter made of wheat flour, adding various toppings such as bonito flakes, tempura bits, pickled radish, ginger, green onions, and squid, layering separately stir-fried cabbage with sauce, and stacking soba or udon noodles. Finally, finely chopped offal and oil residue are added, flipped, grilled, topped with an egg, brushed with sauce, and garnished with chopped green onions. I chose the luxurious version with all the toppings and requested a half-cooked egg. The sauce, a combination of sweet and spicy, can be chosen between sweet, sweet and spicy, and spicy. The thin soba noodles were chewy, with crispy parts, and the flavors of various toppings layered on top were delicious. After about an hour, I finished lunch and took a taxi to visit "Toji Temple" near the hotel. Thank you for the meal!
