Today's highest temperature in Fukuoka City was 36℃! After the Obon holiday, there was a hint of coolness, but the lingering summer heat is still intense. In today's Koshien quarterfinals, the local team from Ichiki-Kushikino City, Kamimura Gakuen, won 6-0 and advanced to the Best 4! Despite the heat, I hope they can win the bright red championship flag. So, craving for something cool and refreshing, I headed to Yakuin Dori and visited Manda Udon! Manda Udon opened on June 12, 2017! The owner trained at Tsudaya Kanbei, the main temple of the Toyama Urauchi-kai, before opening this restaurant! They have also expanded to Tokyo, with a branch called Manda Jiro in Shinjuku Gyoenmae. Totally unrelated, but I used to like Manda Ginjiro. Haha. Now, I arrived at the restaurant, a 10-minute walk from Nishitetsu Yakuin Station, around 1:30 pm, but it was full with a waiting list for 4 people! After waiting for about 15 minutes, I was seated at the counter. The interior of the restaurant is stylish and doesn't look like a typical udon shop! It is located on the 1st floor of the VIP Yakuin building, and they have used the former dining bar or Italian restaurant space. There is also a terrace seat, making it suitable for use as a cafe! Looking at the menu, there is a wide variety of udon and other dishes available! The appetizers and side dishes are also plentiful, making it a good place for evening use as well. For my first visit, I ordered the most popular item, the cold corn tempura udon (large)! It arrived in about 30 minutes! The dish was visually stunning with grated daikon radish, chopped green onions, bonito flakes, and chopped seaweed, topped with corn tempura. The homemade udon noodles were creamy and slightly transparent, with a strong chewy texture, and most importantly, they were ice-cold! It was the first time I had udon this cold, and it was perfect for such a hot day! The noodles were springy and easy to slurp down, so I didn't feel like the large portion was too much! You could really tell the effort put into making the homemade noodles! Next, the huge corn tempura, almost as big as a tonkatsu! The vegetables were sourced from YAOYASHO, a fresh local produce shop, so they were incredibly sweet and delicious! They were tasty on their own, with a thin and crispy batter that was not greasy, making them easy to eat. Each piece was carefully prepared, and you could tell a lot of effort went into it! I left the restaurant completely satisfied around 2:30 pm, but there were already more than 10 people waiting! I would like to try visiting for dinner next time. Thank you for the meal!!
