When I went to Izumo Taisha, I mentioned that I tried something called Izumo zenzai. While researching zenzai, I found out about awa zenzai. I looked for it in Kyoto and ended up at this place. It's a popular shop, and even though I arrived before opening time, there were already people waiting. I ordered the "awa zenzai" here, which takes about 10 minutes to cook. I also ordered the "mitarashi dango" with 3 skewers. I came for the awa zenzai, but it turns out the specialty of this shop is the mitarashi dango. By the way, you may have noticed that I keep writing zenzai, but don't you feel something is off when you look at the pictures? That's right, it's zenzai without the soup! In Kansai, zenzai with soup and sweet red bean paste is called zenzai, but in Kanto, zenzai without soup (regardless of the type of red bean paste) is called zenzai. So, awa zenzai is a dish from the other region after all. The other zenzai at this shop had soup, but the awa zenzai was soupless. The sweetness of the red bean paste was more direct without the soup (maybe because it was chunky red bean paste?). Soupless and sweet, delicious... The awa mochi had a unique nutty flavor and a chewy texture that gave it a different deliciousness from regular mochi. Honestly, this was even more delicious than regular mochi! The awa zenzai was the best with its soupless sweetness and tasty awa mochi. As for the mitarashi dango, it was subtly sweet, with the soy sauce flavor taking the forefront. If I had eaten this alone, I might not have liked it, but as a palate cleanser after the sweetness of the awa zenzai, it was actually quite good. Thank you for the meal ☆☆☆

I received warabi mochi as a souvenir when I went to Kyoto. It was a set of 6 pieces, including matcha warabi mochi and black honey kinako warabi mochi. I chilled them in the refrigerator before eating, and they tasted even better. I also wanted to try mitarashi dango, but the shop was about to close, so they only had warabi mochi available. It was not too sweet, very elegant, and the warabi mochi itself was soft. I thought it was truly a top-notch shop. Next time I visit Kyoto, I definitely want to try them at the store.

Before the end of summer, I felt like eating shaved ice, so I thought about where to go and remembered Umeen. I was happy to be able to choose between sweet bean paste with whole beans or smooth sweet bean paste for my shaved ice. Next time, I would like to try the rice dumplings.

Elastically sweet Mitarashi dango! It looks and tastes like tteokbokki. I was able to buy it as a takeout without waiting in line. The dango is not too soft, surprisingly quite elastic. It's very sweet, so if you like sweet Mitarashi dango, you'll enjoy it. The generous amount of sauce is delicious. 5 pieces for 450 yen.

On the day I visited, which was a Saturday, there were about 5-6 people waiting inside the shop. I tried the "mitarashi dango" and green tea mochi. The mitarashi dango is a speciality here, with 5 small-sized pieces in total. The sauce is not too sweet, and the mochi is soft and chewy, making it easy for anyone to enjoy. The combination of the gentle sweetness and the chewy dango is definitely a winning one. It's no wonder this place is popular! I will definitely visit again!

During my trip to Kyoto on a Saturday evening around 6pm, I was prepared to wait in line but luckily managed to get a seat right away. However, there was a line forming shortly after. I ordered the mitarashi dango drink set (with green tea). As soon as it arrived, a delicious aroma filled the air. The mitarashi sauce was strong with soy sauce and had a rich flavor. It was not too sweet, but had a nice crispy texture. The dango was chewy but not too sticky, with a bite that was easy to chew. It reminded me a little of the texture of Korean tteokbokki. The green tea in the set had a nice bitterness that paired perfectly with the rich flavor of the mitarashi dango! I also tried a bit of my partner's Uji sweet potato shaved ice. The matcha syrup and red bean were quite sweet, so I think it would go well with the soy sauce flavor of the mitarashi. The atmosphere of the shop and the staff were great, giving off a Kyoto-like vibe that left me very satisfied.

The rare oblong-shaped mitarashi dango is small in size, making it easy to eat. The slightly burnt surface adds a nice crunch. The taste is not overly sweet, but it lacks a bit of depth. The warabi mochi has a deliciously gooey texture. The restaurant is not very spacious, but surprisingly easy to get into for a popular spot.

Visited the long-established sweet shop "Umezono" in Kawaramachi. Established in 1927, this longstanding shop has multiple locations in Kyoto city. Tried the Mitarashi dango and Anmitsu (¥950), their signature menu items. The Mitarashi was warm, with a perfect balance of softness and elasticity. It had a sweet and slightly bitter, sticky texture. The presentation was incredibly cute, but the taste was traditional. The Anmitsu was small in size, with the red bean paste retaining some texture while being moist. The agar jelly seemed firm at first but melted delicately in the mouth. The black syrup was mildly sweet, with a hint of bitterness. It felt like a mature version of Anmitsu, which I think is nice and fitting for Kyoto. It's easy to enjoy in Kawaramachi.

Located a 5-minute walk from Kawaramachi Station, I ordered the "No-Wait Mitarashi Dango and Kinako Shiratama with Ice Green Tea" set for 1160 yen on a Saturday at 18:30. The set arrived promptly in 5 minutes. The Mitarashi Dango was delicious, with a nice balance of mochi and sauce, although they were slightly smaller in size compared to others. The Kinako Shiratama was also delicious, with the mochi itself being very tasty. I think I will just order the Kinako Shiratama next time, maybe for takeout. Thank you for the meal!

I went to a famous plum orchard to eat shaved ice! When I went around 12 o'clock on Sunday, it was quite empty ^^ There were many toppings to choose from, but I decided on the recommended set of matcha warabi mochi, kinako shiratama shaved ice!! When I tried it, the matcha flavor was quite authentic and not too sweet. I personally like it sweeter, so I thought it would have been better with condensed milk topping. But since there was a separate matcha sauce included, I was able to enjoy it until the end (*Ü*) What was even more delicious was the mitarashi dango!! As expected of a famous place, no matter how many I ate, I didn't get tired of the perfect sweet and salty taste, it was the best(;;)

During a trip to Kyoto, unable to resist the heat and humidity, we checked into our hotel and couldn't wait until nighttime for a cold beer. Drawn in by the sign that said "ice," we entered the shop. Two middle-aged men who didn't quite fit the image of a traditional sweet shop immediately ordered shaved ice without hesitation. Later, we found out that their specialty is mitarashi dango. The matcha milk and matcha warabi mochi were also incredibly delicious.

Umezo-san, I ordered the flower petit fours for revenge since they were sold out last time. They were arranged on a plate one by one, so you can enjoy all of them at once, a great deal! The Mitarashi dango was recommended to eat while warm, and it was delicious! The two types of warabi mochi were consistently tasty. As for the Mikasa, it had something on top of the anko that I couldn't quite make out. It had a slight bitterness, but it wasn't too noticeable. Lastly, the matcha cookie had sweet red bean paste spread underneath the cookie, but I ended up eating them separately (laughs). It was a rare sight to see a line on a Sunday.

Four of us went to this restaurant. The entrance is narrow so you can't see inside from outside, but just looking at the showcase of mitarashi dango at the storefront got us excited. It was lunchtime so it wasn't crowded yet, which was good. The mitarashi dango was delicious, no doubt about it! It had a nice chewy texture and its small and elongated shape made it very easy to eat. The crispy burnt parts were slightly bitter and fragrant, incredibly delicious! I ordered a set with kinako shiratama, so I dipped the mitarashi dango in the kinako powder and ate it... even more to my liking! The green tea was also delicious! Thank you for the meal!

Visited on Saturday afternoon. The restaurant was very crowded, but takeout was available without waiting. Ordered a 6-piece Mitarashi dango. Got freshly made ones on the spot, and they were deliciously hot. The price was reasonable, so I was very satisfied. I want to go again.

I went around 11 am on a weekday, so the restaurant was not crowded and there were plenty of seats available. I was able to relax and enjoy my time. The rice cakes were fragrant and chewy, perfect with the matcha. The price of the sweet red bean soup was reasonable compared to other places, making it a great value for money.

When I visited around 3:30pm on a weekday, I had to wait a bit but was seated quickly. The interior hallway was quite narrow, making it difficult to pass by while waiting. I ordered a set of rice balls and green tea, as well as a single item of soy milk matcha. The single item came with a snack, a delicious matcha-flavored Japanese sweet. The rice balls were small but chewy and tasty, in a cute size that you can easily gobble up. Since it was hot, I opted for cold green tea instead of matcha, and was surprised by its sweetness. The soy milk matcha was a bit less sweet due to the addition of soy milk, but I would have preferred it less sweet when eating with the rice balls.

Snack ■ Mitarashi Dango Drink Set ¥960 (tax included) One of the Kyoto gourmet sweets that I personally want to try is "mitarashi dango". Each shop has its own unique twist, making it a must-try in Kyoto. When it comes to mitarashi dango, the round shape is familiar, but the ones at this shop are a bit different. I visited the sweet shop "Umazono", which was founded in 1927 and located in Kawaramachi, a bustling area of Kyoto. I visited around 4:00 PM on a weekday and was able to enter without waiting. I ordered the "Mitarashi Dango Drink Set". For the drink, you can choose from cold options like green tea, matcha soy milk, black sugar soy milk, or hot options like matcha (+50 yen), hojicha, or sencha. The order arrived in about 3-4 minutes. The mitarashi dango here is shaped like a bag. The sweet and rich sauce with a slightly burnt crust is delicious. The light and chewy texture, along with a gentle elasticity, is very appealing. The set comes with 5 pieces, but they are small and can be eaten quickly. The green tea drink is just right with a mild astringency. Umazono, now run by the 3rd generation, also operates cafes and other new businesses, making it a place worth visiting.

I got a set of 5 mitarashi dango to go. One thing that sets them apart from other mitarashi dango is the texture. Despite being small, they have a firm bite, which gives a satisfying feeling. The sauce is sweet and rich.

◆Report ContentEnjoying "mitarashi dango" at "Umeen Kawaramachi Store"◆MenuMitarashi dango drink set ¥960◆ImpressionToday we introduce another gourmet spot from around the country! This time, it's Umeen Kawaramachi Store in Kyoto. I was searching for a delicious mitarashi dango shop in Kawaramachi, and stumbled upon this place. There were about 5 groups lined up in front of the store, so I waited for about 20-30 minutes before entering. I ordered the store's signature dish, mitarashi dango. While mitarashi dango is typically round, Umeen's version is elongated. This unique shape caught my attention. With just one bite, I could tell this mitarashi dango was different from what I usually have! It's not overly sweet like typical mitarashi dango, but has a slightly salty sauce with a chewy texture that lets you savor the flavor of the mochi. Despite the sauce's flavor, the mochi still stands out and tastes delicious. The drink in the set was matcha soy milk. The bitterness of the matcha paired with the smooth sweetness of the soy milk was a great combination. If you're craving mitarashi dango, be sure to give this place a try!✨

After waiting for about 30 minutes, I entered the restaurant. The interior had about 20 seats. I ordered the set of mitarashi dango and matcha tea that I was looking for. The dango was fragrant, and the mitarashi had just the right amount of sweetness, so delicious!!! There were several set menus available, and the person I went with ordered the anmitsu set. It was also delicious!!! The combination of traditional Japanese sweets and matcha tea made me feel the essence of Kyoto, it was amazing!

I visited this restaurant during my trip to Kyoto. It is located on Agate Street along Kawaramachi Street. The shop is small, with the entrance area serving as a takeout counter and kitchen, and tables in the back for dining in. It operates on a one-person-one-order system, so sharing with family or friends is not possible.
