It's a bit confusing with all the original and main takeout shops in Kyoto, but at "Honke Funashaya," it's difficult to rate the purchase evaluation. The most famous item is the colorful beans for 850 yen, which looks vibrant and could make a good souvenir, but the taste is like eating a lump of sugar, too sweet for modern people. The "Ikari Mame" for 280 yen for 100g is addictive as a snack with alcohol. The "Aji Matsuri" for 275 yen for 100g is highly recommended. The "Uji" for 300 yen for 100g and the "Batapi" for 550 yen for 200g are consistently delicious. If I hadn't bought the colorful beans, the rating would have been even higher.

The shops at the foot of Sanjo Ohashi bridge are eye-catching even from afar. The variety of rice crackers and senbei always leave me indecisive. I particularly enjoy the tea-flavored rice crackers and the small senbei with sansho pepper. I look forward to visiting Kyoto just to enjoy these treats. Thank you for the delicious meal.

There is a traditional Japanese sweets shop near Sanjo Station on the Keihan Electric Railway. I happened to stop by last time and bought some sweets, which were delicious and cheap, so I visited again this time for souvenirs. They have a variety of traditional sweets, and I especially love the bean sweets. The price is so cheap for this amount, it's great value for money. Next time, I'm going to try the rice crackers.

Last week, I went to "Funhashiya" in Teramachi Nijo, and today I visited "Funhashiya" near Sanjo Ohashi. I mistakenly bought the roasted soybeans called "Hazuke Mame" last time, so this time I wanted to get the fried soybeans called "Ikari Mame". I also purchased some crispy rice crackers with seaweed (name unknown). The beans were not greasy and had a refreshing taste, and the rice crackers were not as hard as I expected. Both were delicious, but personally, I would have preferred a stronger saltiness in the beans and a richer soy sauce flavor in the rice crackers.

I bought some souvenirs at the main store Funahashiya in Sanjo Ohashi Nishi-tsumi, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City. In addition to the usual assortment of five-colored beans, I also bought Kamo no Ishi because it looked delicious. The packaging box for the five-colored beans is beautiful, with each color representing a different flavor: yellow - yuzu, red - ume, white - Fukuyuki, green - Kamonose, brown - Ochibo, and light green - Aosumame. Normally, the female staff at the store would fill the box with plenty of five-colored beans, but this time a male staff member filled it and I noticed that the number of beans was slightly less than before. Each flavor is delicious and the Kamo no Ishi was the best choice. It's really tasty with 9 different varieties, including a spicy red one, ume-flavored seaweed, soy sauce, sesame, matcha, and my favorite, Hoeten. It's a variety of flavors that I enjoy snacking on every day. Check out more photos of this review on the Eternal Rose blog as they are not available on Tabelog. Thank you for reading.

I bought some nostalgic snacks. The yellow yuzu flavor is very good. It goes well with tea. The red plum flavor has a beautiful color that is pleasing to the eyes. The white Fukuyuki has a refreshing sweetness that is not too heavy, so you can eat as much as you want. The green Kamo-no-se has a lot of pairs stuck together. The brown Ochibo has a great cinnamon scent. I ended up buying some rice crackers too.

Located a 3-5 minute walk from Sanjo Station, the traditional Japanese confectionery shop Honke Funashaya is famous for its long history dating back to the Meiji era. Their specialty menu item, Goshikimame (five-color beans), has been beloved by people from Kyoto since the establishment of the shop. Customers can bring their own empty boxes and the shop owner will fill them with Goshikimame, following an old-fashioned system. This time, I purchased the popular menu item, Kinpindou. While the Goshikimame looked tempting, I was looking for a light and easy-to-eat snack, so I chose Kinpindou. The Kinpindou had a firm and crunchy texture with a definite sweetness, making it a classic and delicious treat that you could easily eat as much as you want. If you are looking to purchase traditional Japanese sweets as souvenirs from a Kyoto old-established shop, be sure to visit Honke Funashaya. Thank you for the meal!

The five-colored beans from the main store Funahashiya in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, are made with peas and sugar, creating a simple bean confectionery. My family loves them, so we buy them every year. I purchased both the boxed and the bagged five-colored beans. The bagged beans come in six different flavors, each with a unique taste and aroma. When you open the package, a pleasant scent of cinnamon spreads gently. Yellow - Yuzu fragrance: Created after the samurai, Nakoka Shintaro, brought yuzu from his hometown of Kochi to the shop as a gift. Red - Baizen: Made with plums from the plum grove at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. White - Fukuyuki: Carefully selected to match the shape of the beans, offering a plain flavor. Green - Kamonose: Inspired by the fresh greenery along the Kamo River in spring. Brown - Ochibo: Dried powder of the bark of the Camphor tree is wrapped around the beans. Light Green - Ousumame: Made with new shoots of tea leaves from Komatsunagi Kageen, a tea shop with a history of several hundred years in Uji. I enjoyed savoring the six different flavors of five-colored beans. For more details and exclusive photos not found on Tabelog, please visit the blog "Eternal Rose." Thank you for reading.

Located at the western end of Sanjo Ohashi in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, is the main branch of Funahashiya. This is where the notorious thief Ishikawa Goemon was executed by being boiled alive in oil after being paraded through the streets, near the Sanjo Kawara. This is how the term "Goemonburo" originated. I visit this store every year to buy their famous Goshiki Mame (five-colored beans) sweets. I purchased both the boxed and bagged versions, which are colorful and emit a pleasant aroma when opened. Goshiki Mame costs 490 yen and is a simple Kyoto confection made only with edamame beans and sugar. The different colors offer unique flavors, making it a delightful treat. The bagged version costs 540 yen and includes variations like Yuzu (yellow), Baizen (red), Fukuyuki (white), Kamonose (green), Ochibo (brown), and Uji Matcha (light green). Each flavor has its own story and is a testament to the rich history of Kyoto confectionery. For more information and exclusive photos, check out the detailed blog post on Eternal Rose.

I visited a long-established Kyoto confectionery shop near Sanjo Ohashi today. The shop, called Honke Funahashiya, has been located at the foot of Sanjo Ohashi, which is also the western starting point of the Tokaido 53 Stations, since 1905. The building exuded a Kyoto-like atmosphere. Inside the shop, there were various snacks such as arare, okaki, and kinpaito. I was allowed to take photos of the items but not the people. The shop seemed to operate by allowing customers to choose their snacks and have them packed by the staff. I requested a box of Goshikimame (five-colored beans), which were mixed on the spot and packed for me in a beautiful box. Goshikimame is a traditional Kyoto sugar confection made only with beans and sugar. Each bean is quite large and has a unique five-color mix. The white beans have a basic sugar flavor, the yellow beans have a strong yuzu aroma, the red beans have a rich plum flavor, the brown beans have a refreshing cinnamon taste, and the green beans exude the elegance of Uji tea. When bitten, the beans crushed along with the sugar coating, spreading sweetness in the mouth. I was able to enjoy this traditional Kyoto sugar confection. It's a perfect souvenir from Kyoto.

There are many different types of rice crackers here. It's hard to decide with so many options. The overall prices are a bit high, but I guess that's because they use good quality ingredients. These are completely different from the ones you find in supermarkets! I bought the soy sauce-based rice crackers with a hint of sansho pepper. The sansho pepper flavor is strong and delicious. I like sansho pepper, so I really enjoyed these. I visit this area occasionally, so I'll stop by again on my way back. The bag doesn't have a sealed closure, so it's necessary to transfer the crackers to another container or a ziplock bag when you get home!

Located at the west end of Sanjo Ohashi Bridge, this long-established rice cracker and bean confectionery shop opened in July of 1905 as a branch of the main store in Teramachi Nijo, which was established in 1884. The main store was said to have been engaged in the tea business in Uji before that. The exterior of the shop has a charming appearance. I have visited many times before, but this is my first time writing a review on Tabelog. This time, I bought a pack of Nanami rice crackers (¥810) and two packs of assorted rice crackers (¥170 each) as travel snacks. The Nanami rice crackers are not very spicy in small amounts, but they gradually become spicier as you eat more. The assorted rice crackers for travel are fun as they contain various flavors. I hope this shop continues to thrive for a long time.

Located on Teramachi Street in Nakagyo Ward, the "Funahashiya Sohonten" is said to have branched off from the main branch, "Honke Funahashiya," in the mid-Meiji period. Situated at the west end of Sanjo Ohashi Bridge, the prime location attracts many visitors, although the elderly female owner seems to provide rather indifferent customer service. However, the young female assistant who helped me this time was quite friendly. The shop is filled with various sweets, but only the bean confections such as Goshikimame are homemade. The diverse Arare and Okaki snacks are products from other shops, which is a common product lineup for Kyoto's bean confectionery stores. I bought the "Uki Arare," a unique type of Kyoto Arare known for its distinctive flavor. This round Arare, about 1 centimeter in size, has a subtle soy sauce taste and a delicate sweetness from the water candy, creating a harmonious crispy and fluffy texture that leaves a lasting impression. I once had the opportunity to talk to the mother who made the "Uki Arare," who mentioned that she had taken over from her husband alone, but with no successor, the fate of the shop is to soon disappear. While it used to be widely known, it may not be familiar to people nowadays. The mother of the Uki Arare shared this information with me. The taste is unique and impressive, so if you come across it in a Kyoto rice confectionery store or souvenir shop, be sure to try it out. If you sense a smoky charcoal aroma, then you've found a great bag.

In the past, I used to pass by frequently, but it had been so long that people were asking "How many years has it been?" When I entered the store, it felt nostalgic and unchanged from the old days. I don't eat beans or rice crackers that much, but this time I tried the "ikari beans"! They are much bigger than the ones you see in supermarkets! And on top of that, they don't have that oily smell! The ones sold in supermarkets have a strong smell of oil as soon as you put them in your mouth, which I don't like, but these ones don't have that, and the salt content is also moderate.

This place is located near the hotel where I stayed this time. I have visited here several times, but one of the most famous sweets here is the "Fukudaruma." It has a simple and cute taste, with various expressions and shapes, making it a familiar sweet in Kyoto. Some Japanese restaurants even serve it with tea at the end of the meal. I decided to stop by to try it again after a long time. They also have various other snacks like "Goshiki Mame" and different types of rice crackers. As a fan of rice crackers, I wandered around the store picking up various snacks. However, I couldn't find the Fukudaruma. When I went to pay at the register and mentioned that I wanted the Fukudaruma, I was told that they had stopped production. I was shocked and disappointed as I really liked it. This time, I bought a mix of rice crackers, shrimp rice crackers, and large shrimp and crab rice crackers. The mix includes classic flavors like soy sauce, seaweed, and light soy sauce. They are crispy and delicious. The large shrimp rice cracker is made with only shrimp added to the dough, but it tasted a bit bland to me. The small shrimp rice cracker has seaweed in the dough and is slightly thicker. It has a crispy texture and a good saltiness. I found it more delicious than the large one. The crab rice cracker has a slightly sweet flavor due to the crab mixed in the dough. I preferred the small shrimp rice cracker, but my daughter liked the crab rice cracker the most. The shrimp rice cracker looks like a soy sauce rice cracker, but you can immediately taste the shrimp flavor. The puffy and crispy dough was really tasty and my favorite. Although I was disappointed about the Fukudaruma, I would like to visit again to enjoy the delicious rice crackers. It's sad that the production of Fukudaruma has ended. I hope someone will continue to produce it in the future. Overall, I had a good experience and would like to visit again.

Situated at the west end of Sanjo Ohashi Bridge, it is a shop that anyone visiting Kyoto is likely to have seen. While their signature sweet is the "Goshiki Mame" (five-color beans), their rice crackers, arare, and bean confections are also popular. I opted for the take-out option of "Assorted Rice Crackers and Bean Confections (330 yen)" this time. The bag contained various types of bean confections and arare, each with a delicious flavor and high satisfaction level. They are perfect as they are, or as a snack with beer or sake. With its convenient location and over 130 years of history, this popular shop continues to thrive. In addition to the bag shown in the image, they offer a variety of options such as a bag of peanuts and bean-centered snacks for 330 yen each. They also have items like Kinpaito (golden sugar candy) and hard candy. While the service may sometimes come off as a bit dry, this shop remains a charming, long-standing establishment and a landmark at the west end of Sanjo Ohashi Bridge that I believe will continue to thrive in the future.

I got off at Keihan Sanjo Station for the annual birthday party on November 17, 2019. With over an hour to spare before the 7 pm reservation, I first got some bread for tomorrow morning at the station exit, crossed Sanjo Ohashi Bridge over the Kamogawa River, and decided to take a stroll in Pontocho. At the foot of Sanjo Ohashi Bridge, I found "Honke Funashaya," a long-established store founded in Meiji 17 that sells traditional Japanese sweets and rice crackers. The store, with its old-fashioned charm, was bustling with many people browsing the products. I purchased the following items, all including tax: - Five-color beans bag for 540 yen - Assorted sliced Houten for 330 yen - Shichimi rice crackers for 1100 yen The "Five-color beans," made from peas and sugar and packaged in a bag, and the nostalgic "Assorted sliced Houten" made of crispy karinto covered in sweet ame, were chosen as souvenirs for the birthday celebration's guest of honor. The "Shichimi rice crackers," which I picked for myself, are small rice crackers generously soaked in seven-spice seasoning with a rich soy sauce flavor that tingles on the palate. Once you start eating them, you can't stop enjoying the crunchy and flavorful experience. Although they were a bit pricey, the generous quantity allowed me to savor the traditional flavors for three days. Bon appétit!

In November 2019, I went to Kyoto for dinner. I got off at Keihan Sanjo Station and visited "Honke Funahashiya" located just across Sanjo Ohashi Bridge. They had a variety of rice crackers and snacks on display. I purchased the Sichuan pepper flavored rice crackers this time. It cost 1000 yen for 180g. The rice crackers were flavored with soy sauce, bonito, kelp, and Sichuan pepper. When I tried them at home, they had a nice kick of Sichuan pepper and a delicious aroma. I couldn't stop eating them. Next time, I plan to buy Kyoto's specialty, Goshiki Mame (five-colored beans). Thank you for the meal!

Located just a 2-minute walk from Keihan Sanjo Ohashi Station, I visited the original "Funahashiya" at the western end of Sanjo Ohashi. The shop exudes a nostalgic atmosphere with its wooden construction reminiscent of the Showa era. A sign for "Goshikimame" hangs on the roof, and the vintage Funahashiya sign can be seen on the 1st floor. Inside the glass showcase, there is a colorful display of beans and rice crackers. Among them, I purchased the eye-catching Goshikimame. True to its name, there were indeed five colors: yellow, red, white, green, and brown. Although there are five colors, there are actually six different flavors. The green ones include Kamo no Se and Ousumame, each with a slightly different taste. Made from roasted green peas and sugar, they offer a nostalgic and delicious experience. Some come in cute boxes while others are in plastic bags, making them perfect souvenirs.
