shihonatsu
The last stop of the Fukuoka expedition was at Tenjusha in Kokura. I couldn't make a reservation at the Kyomachi branch, so I asked a friend in Fukuoka to make a reservation for this restaurant instead. When I arrived at 11:30, there were no other customers, so I had the owner all to myself for about 30 minutes and enjoyed the sushi! I requested omakase and received only nigiri sushi, with cucumber as a palate cleanser. Here are the items I remember eating: hirame, shirauo, gunkan-style saba, seared sawara, uni, tairagi shellfish, shrimp head salt-grilled, toro, ikano doguro, seared anago, fugu, fugu shirako, gunkan-style grilled oyster, gunkan-style grilled aji, and me-negi. Most of the items were already seasoned, and I only used soy sauce for maguro and aji. The seasoning included yuzu pepper, sansho pepper, and citrus flavors that I had never experienced before. I was surprised and impressed, and found this sushi to be the most delicious I have ever eaten. The owner worked at a good pace, so I felt hesitant to take photos and finished the meal in about 40 minutes. I spent less than an hour in Kokura, then rushed back to Hakata by Shinkansen and flew back to Tokyo. It was a challenging journey, but the restaurant was truly wonderful. I had 2 beers and the bill came to 14,500 yen. The pricing was unclear, but for this quality of sushi at this price, it was quite a bargain!
