Eat Log 3.47 ✍️ Michelin Bib Gourmand Tempura Abe Hacchome Store Ginza/Shinbashi - Ebi Tendon ¥1,000
On this day, I headed to "Tempura Abe Hacchome Store," where you can enjoy the incredibly cost-effective Ebi Tendon that has also earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand in Ginza. This restaurant, opened on April 1, 2016, as the second branch of "Tempura Abe" in Ginza 8-chome, is run by the chef Abe, who has been frying tempura at the traditional Japanese restaurant "Nadaman" for 30 years. They offer authentic tempura at a super reasonable price!
The carefully selected oil, a blend of cottonseed oil and sesame oil, achieves a crispy texture, light chewiness, and ideal juiciness. The tempura, which is satisfyingly filling but not heavy, pairs excellently with alcohol. There are also private rooms at the back of the restaurant, making it perfect for entertaining or special occasions!
On a certain Thursday, I arrived at 12:10 and was promptly seated at the counter in the back as a customer was finishing their payment. Despite its location in Ginza, the lunch menu offers Kakiage Don and Ebi Tendon for only ¥1,000 each, making it incredibly cost-effective! I was torn between the rumored delicious Kakiage Don and Tempura Lunch, but I decided to order the Ebi Tendon.
After a 10-minute wait, my Ebi Tendon arrived! When I opened the lid, I was greeted with three pieces of Ebi Tempura along with eggplant, okra, shiitake mushrooms, and lotus root, all with a significant presence and volume. The plump Ebi Tempura was incredibly delicious with a light and crispy coating. The carefully selected oil truly lived up to its reputation, as it was not heavy at all! While the eggplant and okra were tasty, the shiitake mushrooms, with their rich umami flavor and pleasant aroma, were exceptionally juicy and delicious. I was delighted to have three pieces of Ebi Tempura, but I wished there were more shiitake mushrooms!
What stood out about all the ingredients was the perfect cooking. Despite having three pieces of Ebi and four types of vegetables, the rice portion was quite generous, yet the Ebi Tendon remained delicious until the last bite. Although I usually avoid tempura bowls because they tend to be greasy, I realized that truly delicious tempura is in a league of its own.
I will definitely come back to try the Kakiage Don or Tempura Lunch next time!
