[Tokyo, Chuo-ku] [Number of visits: 3 times] On February 26, 2020 (Wednesday), I visited a motsunabe izakaya located on the east side of Ginza Hacchome and Showa Street. I visited during lunchtime. The location is near the intersection where Showa Street meets the southern end of Kaigan Street (above Tokyo Expressway). It is located on a side street of Showa Shell, northwest of the Shinbashi Capsule Tower. It is very hidden, so unless you are walking in the neighborhood, you may not notice its existence. It is a 5-minute walk from Shiodome Station on the subway and an 8-minute walk south from Higashi-Ginza Station. Closed on Sundays. Since it is a prepaid system, be sure to "decide on the menu before entering" the restaurant. The entrance is low, so be careful not to hit your head (also when leaving). There are four lunch menu options: fried chicken set, motsunabe set (salt, soy sauce), spicy motsunabe set. You need to inform the staff of your order and pay at the first-floor kitchen. Take off your shoes and store them in the shoebox before climbing the narrow stairs to the second floor. There are many shochu bottles next to the stairs. Since there are no slippers, your feet might feel a bit cold in winter. The second-floor seating consists of one table for one person, one table for two people, and three tables for four people. There also seems to be seating on the third floor. All seats are non-smoking. The BGM is jazz piano. There are many shochu bottles lined up next to the stairs. Despite being built on a small plot of land, the interior is quite modern. Many autographs of celebrities are displayed. For some reason, there are many female customers, so a lone male may feel slightly out of place. The water is self-service (there is a tea server at the top of the stairs). Rice refills are free. You can also choose "without rice" (¥100 discount). Condiments such as yuzu pepper, crushed red pepper, shichimi, and ground sesame are provided on the table. -------------------------------------------------- ■ Motsunabe set - Salt (¥1100) *Including 10% tax Served in a small aluminum pot for one person. Comes with rice and pickles. The aroma of motsu rises from the pot. I imagined a cloudy soup, but it turned out to be a clear, light salt soup. The saltiness is just right, not too strong or weak, quite pleasant. The beef offal is cut into small pieces and has a rather firm texture. It's like the meat of a mature bird, or rather... a rubbery texture. If you want to enjoy the "jiggly" texture of offal, I honestly can't recommend it (at least for lunch). It's better to think of it as an ingredient for the broth rather than tasting the offal itself. What you should pay attention to is that it is "full of vegetables." Large cabbage, chives, garlic (a few slices), tofu, and aburaage. The sweetness of the cabbage is impressive. The reason why there are many female customers may be because you can enjoy eating vegetables. And when you scoop at the bottom, there is hidden "ramen" for finishing the pot! The texture is soft like udon. I was pleasantly surprised that you could eat the noodles as well. With the combination of noodles and rice, the portion is just right. You can have rice refills, and you can also enjoy it like a porridge by adding rice to the pot. -------------------------------------------------- ■ Spicy motsunabe set (¥1200) Although it doesn't boil vigorously, when you try it, it was actually hot, so I was relieved. There is plenty of chili oil floating on the surface, so it doesn't seem to boil over. The fragrant aroma of sesame, probably from the chili oil, stimulates the appetite. The taste is more spicy than I expected. The soup is soy sauce-based with a strong kick of chili peppers. It's not super spicy, but it's enough to make you break a sweat. The noodles hidden at the bottom are soaked in the spicy soup and are more delicious than the salt motsunabe mentioned earlier. These noodles can even be a side dish for rice. -------------------------------------------------- ■ Fried chicken set (¥900) Four fist-sized pieces of fried chicken are served with raw vegetables. The fried chicken is crispy and hot! The seasoning is good, and the crispy skin is delicious. You can change the flavor with mayonnaise and yuzu pepper. Especially, the yuzu pepper...
