It was a private dinner at the second floor of Shiori. This was the best. First, we were served delicious mushroom and mountain vegetable spinach ohitashi. Then a vegetable salad. They showed us the ingredients for today's tempura. First, shrimp, clams, and sea bream, all fresh. The first tempura was shrimp legs and conger eel bones. It was amazing. Then shrimp. Amazing. Then ginkgo nuts. It's the season for it. Then young sweetfish. It looks like it's swimming. Then onion, sweet and amazing. Then delicious white fish wrapped in shiso leaves. Also lotus root, sea bream, myoga, scallop, followed by palate cleansers like okra and jellyfish. And again shrimp, eggplant, squid, thick asparagus. Kiss was also amazing. Finally, tempura tea. It was the best. Lastly, dessert like melon. It was amazing.

The shop is usually crowded with female customers, but today there was no line and it wasn't very busy inside, so I gathered my courage and decided to go in. The counter and table seats were spacious and there were empty seats available. I sat at the counter and watching them cook tempura made me want to eat it, but I was in the mood for a delicious meal, so I decided to go with a bottle of beer for 770 yen (tax included) and a tempura set meal for 1,600 yen (tax included) for a luxurious lunch! It arrived in about 15 minutes. The tempura included 2 shrimp tempura, a small fish, conger eel, shiitake mushroom, zucchini, lotus root, and the rice was refillable, so I had seconds without hesitation. I also had another beer, finished my meal, and left the shop. I was satisfied. I'll try coming back at night next time. Thank you for the meal.

The spacious seating arrangement and warm tea service were nice. The tempura bowl had a nostalgic feel, giving off a Showa era vibe. It might be a good choice when you want to experience that retro atmosphere. Overall, it wasn't rushed. I was surprised to see three large prawns arranged in a row as a single unit. I had trouble with poor cell phone reception, so I wish they had Wi-Fi available.

This time, I had a great deal on tempura rice bowl for lunch. I went there on Saturday morning, about 20 minutes after they opened, and waited in line for about 15 minutes. The taste was elegant. I would like to try it again, but I also want to try other tempura menu items. There were surprisingly many staff members.

Lunch: Tempura Set Meal ¥1,600 (tax included) Established in 1885 in Ginza 3-chome, the long-standing tempura restaurant "Ginza Tengoku Main Store." The current location is a new store that relocated in 2020. The tempura served when the restaurant first opened was like fast food at the time. As if to preserve that tradition, you can enjoy authentic tempura at a very reasonable price. I visited around 1:30 PM on a weekday. There were about 3 groups of customers already there. The restaurant has counter seats and table seats, and even though I was alone, I was seated at a table for two. The lunch menu until 3:00 PM includes the "Lunch Tempura Donburi" and the "Lunch Tempura Set Meal," both priced around ¥1,500. This time, I ordered the "Lunch Tempura Set Meal." It arrived in about 15 minutes. The tempura included 2 shrimp tempura, whiting, conger eel, green peas, eggplant, and lotus root. Seasonings provided were salt and tempura dipping sauce. The tempura was crispy and classic. It's nice to be able to enjoy this kind of tempura easily. It was also nice to be able to get a second helping of rice. Depending on the timing, there may be a line as well. In fact, after I entered, including foreign customers, the restaurant was full. For ¥1,600 in Ginza, this tempura set meal is reasonable. From the Meiji era to the Reiwa era, it will continue to be loved in the future.

I arrived at the restaurant just before 12 o'clock on Saturday. It seemed like the peak right after opening had passed. I was seated at the counter. From the counter, I could see the inside of the kitchen. There were two people at the copper tempura pot. One person was serving rice and the other was pouring miso soup. Wait, is it "pouring" or "serving"? I'm a bit confused. I watched the person in charge of miso soup and noticed that their thumb was touching the middle of the bowl. It was a bit off-putting. But when they poured the miso soup, their fingertips were away from the inside of the bowl. Next, I watched the person serving rice and saw that their fingertips were also touching the middle of the bowl lid. It's visible because of the counter seating. If it wasn't visible, I wouldn't know about it. I wish they would hold it in a way that doesn't touch it with their bare hands. Now, I ordered the lunch tempura rice bowl for 1500 yen. It came with miso soup and pickles. The tempura bowl had three small shrimp, squid tempura, sliced eggplant, and lotus root. The tempura was generously topped with sauce, and the rice was soaked in the sauce, making it delicious.

I visited the long-established tempura restaurant "Ginza Tengoku Honten" in Ginza 8-chome for a lunch tendon! It was a scorching hot day, and I thought I should have a delicious lunch in Ginza. It was my first visit here. The restaurant was bustling, with a little line forming outside. There were also foreign visitors waiting in line, so maybe the restaurant has been featured in some media. The tendon consisted of shrimp, vegetable tempura, sweet potato, and pumpkin! It was a perfect combination. The rice was cooked just right, and the sauce coated everything beautifully. It was an excellent tendon.

A tempura restaurant closer to Shinbashi rather than Ginza. It may be difficult for someone like me to find a place to enter, but during lunchtime, you can manage to get in. It might be tough at night. The customers seem to be working professionals, and for 1500 yen, it's very satisfying. The taste was elegant, although I don't remember it clearly. If I go to Ginza again, I will definitely visit this place once more.

"I came across the 'Spring Mountain Vegetable Assortment' and was immediately drawn in. It's one of my favorite dishes, especially love fiddlehead ferns and young bamboo shoots. The assortment includes bracken fern, udo (mountain asparagus), taranome (Japanese angelica tree shoots), fiddlehead ferns, and bamboo shoots. The bamboo shoots are sweet. The fiddlehead ferns are small but delicious ☺️. I added a rice set for a total of 2420 yen. Quite reasonable! ☺️ There was a bit of a line, but I was able to smoothly get a seat at the counter. I'll come back again this season. Next time, I'll try the bowl."

We arrived around 11:42 on a weekday Saturday, and the restaurant was full when we entered but there were empty seats when we left. We looked at the menu, placed our orders, and paid when we left. The food was served around 11:59. The tempura had a fluffy and soft texture with a slightly strong taste in the sauce. The eel did not match my taste preference in flavor and frying style, but the rest was good and delicious. The tempura set allowed for adjusting the taste with the sauce. My family members found the tempura rice bowl too salty as they couldn't adjust the seasoning. The restaurant was clean and had a nice atmosphere. Other customers were eating quietly, and it felt casual and easy to enjoy the meal.

It had been a while since I last had the tempura bowl at Tengoku. This was my first visit since the store relocated to a new place. The tempura bowl seemed more refined, perhaps due to the new store. I have been coming to Tenkoku since the days when Mr. Ibata Masataro was just a stock boy. I always order the "tempura rice" set, which is basically a tempura set meal. They always confirm with me if I want the set meal, but I like to follow Mr. Ibata's lead and order it that way. I used to come here only for dinner a couple of times, but this was my first time coming for lunch. While the dinner is delicious, I prefer to have a little bit of tempura with rice, soup, and pickles for lunch. The price is great for Ginza, and it's a reliable option for a quick meal during work breaks.

The tempura bowl had a dark color and a strong soy sauce flavor. Personally, I prefer a milder soy sauce flavor. I visited the ultra-long-established tempura restaurant "Ginza Tengoku Main Store," located a 7-minute walk from Ginza Station and founded in 1885. I arrived 10 minutes before the opening on Saturday and was the 5th in line. I was able to enter as soon as they opened. I ordered the lunch tendon for 1,500 yen, which came with miso soup and pickles. It was served in just 10 minutes. The tempura bowl consisted of 3 prawns, squid tempura, Nasu eggplant, and lotus root. The ingredients were thoroughly soaked in a dark-colored tempura sauce. The tempura sauce, despite its appearance, was not too heavy and had a sharp soy sauce flavor that was mellow and delicious. I enjoyed it until the last bite.

Established in the 18th year of the Meiji era, "Tengoku" has gone through many changes before finally completing its brick-colored main building in Ginza Hacchome in 1984. In 2020, the building was sold and the restaurant relocated to a new location just behind the original spot, where it reopened for business. The new space features a L-shaped counter with 10 seats, and 20 table seats. The second floor serves tempura at the counter and a restaurant called "Shiori," while the third floor offers Japanese cuisine at "Yuutsu." The lunch menu includes a tempura bowl with 3 shrimp, eggplant, lotus root, and squid tempura for 1,400 yen, as well as a salad with carrot dressing for 275 yen. There was a period where it seemed like the restaurant had suddenly closed or gone bankrupt, but it turns out they simply relocated to a new spot just two streets behind the original location. Despite the smaller scale, Tengoku is still going strong.
