A udon and soba restaurant in Kyoto. Located near Okazaki Park, next to another famous udon restaurant called Yamamoto Menzo. The sidewalk is always crowded with people, so passersby might wonder what's going on. I happened to pass by 15 minutes before opening and the line was still short. I saw it as an opportunity and decided to have lunch there.
The restaurant has 9 tables, so they can accommodate up to 9 groups at a time. However, there is one table that seats 6 people, so if you are dining alone, you may be asked to share that table. This time, I managed to get in during the first round. First, I checked the menu. They offer a variety of udon and soba dishes, including hot, cold, tamago toji, curry, and about 30 other options for each. They also have donburi dishes. This time, I opted for udon. I ordered the Oyako Nanba Udon and the Otegaru Tempura Seiro Udon.
○Oyako Nanba Udon (1350 yen)
Udon with plenty of egg on top, with chicken and green onions inside. The noodles are slightly thin with a smooth texture and a firm chewiness. The udon is quite hot, so it becomes slightly softer compared to when it's cold. However, the melt-in-your-mouth texture is still delicious. The broth has a refined taste with a slightly strong sweetness. It is topped with sansho pepper, which adds a nice accent. The egg on top is fluffy and creamy, staying hot even after some time. It can be enjoyed in the summer, but it's best in the winter.
○Otegaru Tempura Seiro Udon (1600 yen)
A more casual version of the Tempura Seiro with fewer types of shrimp and vegetables. The tempura includes 1 shrimp and 4 types of vegetables: lotus root, eggplant, eringi mushroom, and green pepper. The tempura is crispy and adds a delightful texture to the meal. The noodles are the same as the previous dish, slightly thin with a smooth texture and a chewy consistency. Being cold, these noodles have a firmer chewiness, making them enjoyable to eat. The dipping sauce is outstanding. It is rich in umami without being overwhelming. It has a balanced sweetness and the aroma of bonito, showing a dedication to quality ingredients. This dipping sauce is so delicious that you could even enjoy it with sake. It was the best I've ever had. I would gladly wait in line just to have it again. The noodles were enjoyable, with the Tempura Seiro perfect for summer and the Oyako Nanba ideal for winter. However, the most surprising part was the dipping sauce. Its flavor was exceptional, reaching a new level of excellence. I would line up just to have it again! That's how amazing the dipping sauce was. I left feeling completely satisfied. Thank you for the meal.
