I visited Imamiya Shrine in Kyoto's Kita Ward for lunch on a regular day. The fresh greenery is beautiful. The famous "Yasurai Festival" was last week. As I walked along the approach, I saw two shops selling grilled rice cakes across the road. I decided to go into the closer shop, "Kazariya," which has been open since 1637! The long history of the shop got me excited. It was lunchtime, so the shop was not crowded at all. I couldn't decide whether to sit inside or outside, but the weather was nice, so I chose an outdoor seat. I was served tea first and then placed my order. The menu only had grilled rice cakes, and you had to specify how many servings you wanted. One serving costs 600 yen. I got to see the staff grilling the rice cakes! They allowed me to take photos as well. I asked, "Does it get hot grilling them in this season?" and they replied, "Yes, they can burn easily." They were grilling the rice cakes efficiently. The rice cakes were served, and they looked delicious. I had 11 pieces. I quickly tried one, and it was so tasty! The sweet and savory white miso sauce was appetizing. The secret sauce, perhaps. I finished all 11 pieces in no time. Next to me, a couple with two dogs were relaxing during their walk. The grilled rice cakes, loved by locals, finally satisfied my craving. I saw grilled rice cakes featured on NHK's "Gretel's Oven" last night, but they covered the shop across the street. I would like to try comparing them if I have the chance. It was a satisfying meal.

I finally had the chance to try the famous grilled mochi at Imamiya Shrine in Kyoto. We arrived around 4:30pm, just before closing time, so it was not crowded. I had read that one serving looks like a lot in photos, but it was easy to finish. My husband and I ordered two servings. Each serving costs 600 yen and comes with a delicious sweet and savory white miso sauce. The mochi was soft and fragrant, and we finished it in no time. We parked in the parking lot right next to the shop and received a one-hour parking ticket. If I have the chance to visit again, I would definitely go back.

I have been to the restaurant across the street several times, but this is my first time here. I thought the taste wouldn't be much different, but it's actually quite different. Even though there is a line, the turnover is fast. Especially if you don't mind sitting in the tatami area, it's quick. The rice cakes are soft, and the sauce is sweet and salty.

There are aburi mochi shops on both sides of the approach to Imamiya Shrine. Facing the shrine, on the left is Kazariya and on the right is Ichiwa, two separate shops. At Kazariya, a serving costs 600 yen and comes with tea. The mochi may look small, but there are a lot of pieces, so one serving is enough to fill you up. The slightly burnt mochi goes really well with the white miso. There were many people dining alone inside the shop.

⭐️⭐️(out of 3) On the second day of my Kyoto gourmet tour, I tried Aburi Mochi for the first time. It wasn't the most delicious thing I've ever had, but the unique atmosphere of Imamiya Shrine and the two Aburi Mochi tea houses facing each other created a special charm that I really enjoyed!

I had been curious about this restaurant for a while. Even though it was a weekday afternoon, it was quite crowded. You just need to tell the staff how many servings of grilled mochi you want because that's the only item on the menu. Then you just sit and wait, and they bring out the grilled mochi for the number of people you requested. We chose to sit on the tatami mat, but there were also chair seats and outdoor seats resembling a veranda. I was a bit worried at first when I heard that 13 pieces were considered one serving, but I managed to finish it all without any problem. It was really delicious and enjoyable.

When you enter the shop, you are seated at an available table and served barley tea. The shop only offers grilled rice cakes, so you should order one serving for two people as there are 11 pieces. A woman at the counter grills small bite-sized rice cakes coated in charcoal-grilled soybean flour and serves them with a sweet and savory white miso sauce. I wonder if this taste has been the same since old times? It must have been delicious for people in the past, and I find it delicious even now. I hope they continue to preserve this traditional taste.

On the north side of Daikakuji, facing each other along the approach to Imamiya Shrine, there are two grilled mochi shops. This time, I visited the one on the south side, "Aburi Mochi Honke Nemoto Kazariya". The menu consists only of grilled mochi, with 13 pieces for 600 yen per serving (the same as the shop across the street). Some say the flavor here is richer, and it might be true. In any case, I recommend trying both shops.

The menu consists only of grilled rice cakes. You can take off your shoes and relax in a quaint tatami room, while enjoying cold tea. The grilled rice cakes are coated in a sweet and savory white miso-based sauce, which is irresistibly delicious. There are 11 pieces, but each one is bite-sized so they disappear quickly!

I arrived at Imamiya Shrine, but there are two stores in the same location, both with similar names. And when I saw them in person, they were selling the same items in the same format? Anyway, I decided to try the store on the south side first. It was around 2:05 pm and only about 10% of the customers were inside, and the rain was getting heavier. I found a seat and ordered a serving of aburi mochi. The food was served in about 3 minutes... and it was delicious! The white miso sauce that I have seen in Kyoto a few times was sweet and savory, which was great. The tea was also tasty. I paid 600 yen in cash and decided to go to the store across the street. With this, Sweets West Hyakumeiten 2022 is now the 83rd store I have visited.

I tried it once before and was impressed, so I tried it again. The exterior of the building has a design that would appeal to foreigners, reminiscent of a historical drama set. The interior is spacious and well-decorated, sure to please both foreigners and Japanese visitors. The service is efficient and the atmosphere is enhanced by the older ladies grilling the food. The prices are reasonable and the food is served quickly. The taste is fantastic, with a sweet and delicious sauce based on Kyoto miso, perfect for coating the grilled rice cakes. The rice cakes are freshly grilled on the spot, making them irresistible. I always find it interesting that food tastes better when cooked by older ladies at these types of restaurants, and this place is no exception. Aburimochi Honke Nemoto Kazariya is truly the best in the world. Thank you for the meal!

In front of a historic-looking restaurant, they are grilling mochi over charcoal while a fan is blowing. It looks like oysters from a distance, but up close, it's a delicious grilled mochi with white miso dipping sauce, typical of Kyoto. In Nara, kinako powder mochi is more common. They also serve hojicha and you can enjoy the view of the garden from the tatami room. The price is very reasonable for this atmosphere. It's no wonder that many foreigners visit. I was satisfied with this delicious grilled mochi on my long-awaited Kyoto sightseeing trip. Thank you for the meal!

I wanted to try the famous Aburi Mochi at Kazariya in Kyoto, so I made it just in time for their closing at 5:00 pm, arriving at 4:45 pm. I decided to share one serving with a friend at the last minute. The mochi was really delicious, but the sauce was way too sweet for my liking. However, if you have a sweet tooth, you might find it irresistible.

It's a shop that always has a line, but today I was able to get in right away, which was rare. The freshly grilled mochi with a refreshing sweetness of white miso-based sauce goes really well with tea, and you can eat as much as you want. The service was also polite, and it's nice to be able to have a good tea time for just 600 yen.

I went to Kazariya in Kyoto for lunch today to try their grilled mochi. At first, I planned to get it for takeout, but they said it's only available for orders of 3 servings or more. However, they kindly offered to make an exception for 2 servings. While waiting with some tea, I saw others enjoying their mochi and decided to dine in instead of taking out. The mochi was perfectly grilled, with a sweet white miso flavor that melted in my mouth. It was so delicious that I could eat many more. It cost 600 yen for 11 pieces, and when I ordered more, they gave me 2 extra pieces as a bonus. The staff were very friendly, making it a cozy place to dine. I definitely want to go back again. If you dine in, they give you a free 1-hour parking ticket. I recommend everyone to try it out! They are closed on Wednesdays.

I love mochi, so I wanted to try it once and wondered what it would taste like. I saw on YouTube that it was like Mitarashi dango, so I decided to order two servings! When I tried it, it had a flavor similar to Abekawa mochi, with a strong taste of kinako. The mochi was soft with a nice crispy exterior, incredibly delicious that I couldn't help but order another serving! And to my surprise, they gave me two extra pieces in just a few minutes! It was amazing! This mochi is so delicious that I could eat it endlessly. If you come to Kyoto, you must try this dish! I bought from both Ichimonji and Kazariya, but the mochi from Kazariya was plump and soft, and their aburi mochi was the clear winner. I will definitely buy from Kazariya again next time!
- Rimiru's Tips:
- Closed on Wednesdays
- A set of 11 pieces costs 600 yen including tax. According to the staff, 11 pieces is equivalent to the amount of one regular mochi.
- There is a coin parking lot right in front of the shop, 100 yen for 60 minutes.
- When purchasing aburi mochi, you will receive a free 60-minute parking service ticket.

One word. Delicious. Perhaps due to the typhoon affecting the Shinkansen on the weekend, it was a perfect sunny day for sightseeing but there was no wait time and we were seated immediately. The slightly sweet miso-based sauce was so good that I couldn't stop eating. I finished the plate in one go. They also offer takeout, but it's definitely better to eat it warm, so I don't mind waiting in line to eat at the restaurant again. There are two grilled rice cake shops, and both are delicious, but I prefer this one.

I visited the restaurant during lunchtime on a weekday. I arrived around 1:30 pm and was able to enter the restaurant right away. Despite being a weekday, the restaurant seemed quite busy. This place has a history of about 400 years. Across the street, there is another shop called "Ichimonjiya Wasuke" that has also been selected as one of the top 100 aburi mochi shops. This time, I ordered the "Aburi Mochi for 600 yen" and it was served in about 6 minutes. The dish consisted of 11 skewers dipped in white miso sauce. The mochi had a nice roasted aroma and a soft and pleasant texture. The flavor of kinako (soybean flour) was also prominent. Compared to "Ichimonjiya," the sauce here had a stronger sweetness. Also, they served hojicha (roasted green tea) here. Both were delicious, but it might come down to personal preference which one you prefer. It was difficult to choose between "Ichimonjiya" and this place for aburi mochi. It might be good to try both and compare. Thank you for the meal!

I had seen it many times in the media, but this was my first visit. It was quite a walk from the bus stop! After exploring the shrine, it was snack time. At the storefront, three people were diligently skewering mochi on sticks. Then two people grilled them over charcoal. Each piece was bite-sized, so you could eat as many as you wanted. It was a feast with an old-fashioned atmosphere. Thank you for the meal♪

Visit time: 15:10 on Sunday
Wait time: 10 minutes
Menu: Grilled mochi for 600 yen
As a well-known shop, there was a line, but it moved quickly as the grilled mochi doesn't take much time to eat. After waiting for about 10 minutes, we were seated. The menu only had grilled mochi. It was my first time trying grilled mochi, where small pieces of mochi are grilled and topped with a sweet sauce. The sauce had a sweetness that seemed to be made with white bean paste, enhancing the deliciousness of the grilled mochi. It was incredibly delicious. There were about 10 pieces, which was just the right amount to leave you wanting more. I will definitely come back to eat here again. Thank you for the meal.
