After having tsukemen at Enakusan, I decided to stop by Patisserie Tandress, which is the highest-rated patisserie in Kyoto on Tabelog, to get some cakes to go since I was already in Ichijoji. The shop is located about a 10-minute walk east from Eizan Ichijoji Station, slightly off the main road in a residential area. The entrance to the shop looks like a regular house entrance, so you might not notice it without using Google Maps for navigation. I arrived at the shop just after 12 pm during lunchtime, and there were only two other customers inside besides myself. They had about 7 types of fresh cakes, and although I originally wanted a Savarin, they were out of it, so I ended up buying a cake with liqueur and a baked confectionery. ⚫︎ Tranche Champagne Noix (970 yen) I was taken aback by the prices as I had only been buying cakes at nearby affordable shops recently. My maximum for a shortcake was 700 yen, but all the cakes here were priced at 800 yen or more, which surprised me. However, I decided to choose the Tranche Champagne Noix, a chocolate cake with champagne and maraschino mousse. I thought I might get drunk from the two types of alcohol in it, but the alcohol content was almost completely evaporated, so I think even those who are not good with alcohol (like me) will be fine. The mousse, sponge, chocolate, and fruits like cherries all had a fine texture and melted smoothly in the mouth without any roughness or off-flavors. It was a perfect cake without any shortcuts, especially the fine texture of the sponge is something I want you to experience. ⚫︎ Madeleine Pistache Marron (460 yen) I was also surprised by the price, but the fine texture of the batter made this madeleine truly special. The pistachios spread throughout the batter, blending seamlessly with it, resulting in a translucent madeleine without any off-flavors. I felt out of place since everyone else there was a refined woman, but when I was about to put the cakes in my backpack, an elegant elderly woman who seemed to be the owner kindly and gently explained how to carry them. When she noticed I wanted to take a photo, she encouraged me to do so and I was even able to take a picture of the showcase. In my experience, high-end shops often have staff who are difficult to approach, but the lady who seemed to be the owner here was truly kind and considerate. The packaging of the cakes at expensive shops is often excessive, but here, the cakes were securely packaged in a simple manner, and they didn't collapse at all even when I rode my bike home. In that sense as well, I truly thought they were professionals. While I may not visit often due to the prices, I would like to buy from here occasionally or on special occasions.
