Subway Karasuma Line. It's a cafe located about a 9-minute walk from Karasuma Oike station. It has been featured on various TV shows for its voluminous egg sandwich, and I have always wanted to visit someday but never got the chance. During this trip to Kyoto, with almost no plan in mind, after visiting Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, I suddenly remembered this place and decided to visit after transferring buses. Reservations are only available for 11:30, and then every hour after that until all spots are filled (they may also stop taking orders once ingredients run out). When I arrived at 12:50, it was fully booked, so I reserved a spot for 14:30. I went back to my accommodation with a Go Taxi and returned to the cafe later. I visited with a friend, ordered the "Corona Egg Sandwich" (830 yen), the "Yakisoba Sandwich" (830 yen), and a hot and iced "Blend Coffee" (400 yen) each. The "Madrag Blend" coffee was sold out in the morning as it is quite popular. The chef was very efficient, and the sandwiches were served faster than expected. The "Corona Egg Sandwich" was huge, beyond my imagination. It was served hot, and surprisingly tasted quite refreshing. I liked how one side of the bread had mustard sauce and the other had demi-glace sauce. The "Yakisoba Sandwich" that my companion really wanted to try was also amazing. It was packed with yakisoba inside the bread, with a fried egg on top and pickled ginger. It tasted really good. We enjoyed our meal a lot. If you can't finish your sandwich, they offer to pack it for you for a small fee (50 yen per slice, 100 yen for 2 slices). We had 2 slices packed. The packaging was well done, with a stylish logo sticker and even a wet towel included, showing attention to detail. It's a truly great dining experience at a famous and authentic restaurant. I'm glad I finally got to go, and it was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

On a regular afternoon, I happened to peek inside the restaurant and luckily found an empty seat. I finally got to try the Corona Sandwich, which had a fluffy egg and thick bread, larger than a fist with plenty of volume. The classic Napolitan dish was also generous in portion and very satisfying.

The shop that had been receiving attention for inheriting the Corona Egg Sandwich. I arrived at 11:40. Since lunch starts at 12:00, I made a reservation and waited. I was immediately seated at 12:00. I ordered the Corona Egg Sandwich for 990 yen and a cafe au lait for 550 yen. The portion was larger than expected! The bread was moist and thick, and the egg was incredibly fluffy and thick. There was a note explaining that cutting it in half would make it easier to eat for children and women. I wanted to eat both sides at the same time since one side had mustard and the other had demiglace sauce, but it was too big to do so. I was full after eating 3 pieces, so I had the remaining piece wrapped to take home (100 yen for the container). They put it in a cute box for me. When I got home, the box had absorbed moisture and become soggy and deformed. Personally, I would have been happier if they had wrapped it in plastic or made some other effort to prevent this.

The volume of the tamago sandwich is amazing...! You need to be really hungry to finish it all. (I visited after having a snack, so I couldn't finish it all...) The fluffy and delicious tamago was great. The box they gave me for takeout is cute. The atmosphere of the restaurant is also very nice.

How many years has it been since I visited this place? I remember being turned away or told it was sold out twice before due to not having a reservation. (I have already used the Daimaru department store) So this time, I made a reservation and visited with peace of mind. Currently, it seems that there is a one-hour turnover system in place! Of course, I ordered the egg sandwich, as well as the teppan-style Neapolitan pasta and melon soda. The egg sandwich was served so quickly! It hadn't even been 3 minutes since I ordered! I wonder why they were able to serve it so quickly? Was it pre-cooked or was it just a quick technique? This surprised me a bit. I was hungry, so I ate it quickly, but I was satisfied with finally being able to enter and eat! Thank you for the meal!

The atmosphere of the store is retro and nice, personally I like the books on the wall side. It was a hot summer day when I entered, but it felt calming. The Corona egg sandwich was good value for money and delicious. Maybe it's because of my age, but I thought half of the one plate was enough (laughs), I was full.

I visited a shop that I was curious about after attending a nearby event. The egg sandwich is huge. The egg is fluffy and the bread is fluffy too. You definitely need to open your mouth wide to take a bite. It is spread with ketchup and has a slightly sweet taste, which is nice. I was worried if I could finish it all, so I ended up taking the leftovers home. The Napolitan is also said to be delicious and very large. The young woman next to me was eating both the egg sandwich and the Napolitan. She took half of the egg sandwich home. It has a nostalgic feel of a good old-fashioned coffee shop, but the staff is very young and has a nice smile. I love classic Napolitan with a slightly sweet taste. I definitely want to go there.

I stayed at a hotel near Karasuma-Oike, so I went to "Kissa Madrag" for breakfast. I chose the A set from the breakfast menu, which included the now-gone Tamago Sand from "Corona" in Kiyamachi, salad, soup, dessert, and a drink. There were many lively customers in the morning, but I was a little disappointed that I couldn't fully enjoy the retro cafe atmosphere.

Of course, I had the egg sandwich. My friend who joined me ordered the lunch set: Spicy Bolognese pasta + Cold potato soup + Salad. The egg sandwich was as big as rumored! You can enjoy the mayo sauce and ketchup sauce on each side after splitting it in half. The lunch pasta was also delicious with a spicy kick! Next, I might challenge the Napolitan dish~ ^^

First visit. Near Nijo Castle, I decided to stop by "Cafe la Madrague" on Saturday, July 15, 2023. After walking from Nishijin to Nijo Castle, I thought I would take a coffee break and then visit the "Cafe Madrag" that had caught my interest on the way back. Since this place is very popular, I assumed it would be full and planned to just take a look. Luckily, there was one single seat left, so I decided to enter. Arrived at 15:20. Barely managed to find a seat. Ordered. Coffee arrived at 15:24. Egg sandwich arrived at 15:30. Paid the bill at 16:07 and left. Blend coffee (iced) 400 yen, Corona's egg sandwich 990 yen, box charge 100 yen, total 1490 yen. I hydrated my throat with a rich and mellow basic iced coffee. Then, the famous egg sandwich arrived. The large portion took me by surprise, and I was speechless for a moment. When I finally tasted it, the fluffy egg was exquisite. The seasoned sauce on the bread added a nice touch. I enjoyed it skillfully using a fork with my mouth wide open. I asked for half of it to be packed as a souvenir. The atmosphere of the restaurant is also very nice. I observed other customers' orders, and the pasta also seemed to have a substantial volume and looked delicious. I was lucky to be able to enter without waiting. I would like to make a reservation and visit next time. Thank you for the meal. #CafeMadrag #CafeLaMadrague #NijoCastle

I arrived at the opening time of 12:00 and found out that they were fully booked, so I made a reservation for 13:00 and killed some time before revisiting. If you plan to go at 12:00, it's better to make a reservation in advance.
- Corona's Tamago Sandwich (990 yen): I was surprised by the volume, but managed to finish it. The super thick dashimaki tamago had a delicate and elegant taste, very delicious! The bread was soft and tasty even on its own.
- Apple Daisy (690 yen): A cocktail made with Calvados. It's refreshing and easy to drink.

Showa retro coffee shops are becoming increasingly rare due to the aging owners, so it's great to see a recent boom among young people. It's convenient that you can make reservations at this coffee shop, so you don't have to wait in line. Many of the old coffee shops I used to love have long lines now, making it impossible to get in. Being able to take home any leftover egg sandwiches is also much appreciated.

Today, I visited this place. I had made a reservation to have dinner at a nearby Western-style restaurant, but I had some time to spare so I decided to drop by here. It was just before 5 pm on a weekday, and there were 2-3 groups of customers in the dimly lit interior. The food menu's last order had already passed, but they agreed to serve me coffee. I had the Madrag Blend Ice for 600 yen including tax. It had a sharp yet quite strong flavor. I really enjoyed this iced coffee. I resisted the urge to gulp it down and savored the aroma of the coffee as I drank it slowly. Thank you for the meal. Next time, I want to try the popular sandwich.

Arrived at 11:55. There were two couples waiting in front of the store, so I thought I had to line up, but there were no customers inside. When I checked in, they said they could seat me right at 12:00. Lucky! It seemed like I got a seat just in time, as a sign was put up saying they could only take reservations for 13:00 onwards. At 12:00, reserved customers were seated one by one, and the place quickly filled up. The cafe had a very unique atmosphere with movie posters, postcards, and books lined up. I was torn between the daily pasta special and my favorite, Napolitan, so I ordered the Napolitan.

Blended Coffee 400 yen
Iron Plate Napolitan Ketchup Flavor 990 yen
The Napolitan had a creamy egg flavor with a fluffy and smooth texture. I thought the ketchup flavor would be stronger, but the thin noodles added a delicate touch to the taste. It wasn't too sour, with a good balance of sweetness and richness. The portion was quite generous, but the depth of flavor kept it delicious until the last bite! Since it was served on an iron plate, it was really hot, and I actually burned my tongue trying to eat it quickly, so be careful when eating (lol). Oh man, it was delicious! I finished it all by myself! Thank you for the meal.

The day before, I stayed in Kyoto and headed to have breakfast at "Kissa Madrag"! This shop took over the retro coffee shop Seven and also inherited the famous Tamago Sand from the Western restaurant "Corona". It's a 9-minute walk from Karasuma Oike Station on the Karasuma Line. I arrived a little before 8 am after making a reservation in advance. The shop opened at 8 am, with seating for about 12 people including 2-person tables, 1-person tables, and a 4-person sofa. I ordered the "Set A" from the breakfast menu, which includes the famous Corona Tamago Sand. It came with 2 pieces of Corona Tamago Sand, salad, deli, prosciutto, soup, dessert, and a drink with free coffee refill. The A set was served in about 5-6 minutes, and it was larger than I expected. The Corona Sand was huge and thick with plenty of egg sandwiched between soft bread. The egg was subtly seasoned with a rich flavor, making it delicious on its own. The set also included salad, prosciutto, banana yogurt, and I left feeling full. I had a refill of coffee and enjoyed a leisurely time. Thank you for the meal!

Cafe Madrag in Karasuma Oike, Kyoto, is a coffee shop located in Karasuma Oike, Kyoto Prefecture.【Set A】: 1700 yen. I visited this extremely famous historical Kyoto shop during my Kyoto and Shiga trip. This time, I ordered the morning set A, which included: - 2 pieces of Corona egg sandwich - Salad - Deli - Prosciutto - Soup - Dessert - Drink. Since coffee refills were allowed, I had a coffee in the morning ☕️. One notable thing about Set A was the portion size. I honestly underestimated it, thinking it wouldn't be that big, but it was quite large. The egg sandwich was about the size of my hand, so it was very satisfying and made me happy in the morning ☺️. The sauce spread on the bread was different on each side, with mustard sauce and demi-glace sauce, so you could enjoy a mixed taste by eating them together or enjoy the feeling of getting two different flavors by eating them separately. As someone who doesn't usually eat breakfast, I thought it was nice to occasionally have a hearty meal in the morning while traveling and settle my stomach with coffee. The shop is located a 5-minute walk from Karasuma Oike Station, with a distinctive feature of a white signboard with COFFEE written in large letters in blue. The interior of the shop has a retro yet somewhat foreign atmosphere, and since the lifting of the coronavirus restrictions, many foreign visitors have also come to the shop. Spending a leisurely morning time in the back of the shop was a very fulfilling and enjoyable experience. Kyoto has various cafes that offer morning sets, so I would like to explore them all next time I travel. It was delicious, thank you for the meal (*´◒`*)
