I had dinner in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City. The restaurant is located on the west side of Nishikyogoku Station, along Shijo Street, on the right side before Nitori. Look for a sign that says "Menya Toriya." I went to try the popular ramen in Kyoto that was selected in the top 5000 on Tabelog. Inside the restaurant, there are tables in the front and a long counter in the back. The menu includes various types of ramen such as chicken soba, mackerel salted chicken soba, chicken sasami tataki and egg yolk soy sauce mixed soba, aged chicken soba, aged salted chicken soba, chicken seseri and shirasu mixed soba, and the ultimate chicken salt ramen with bream and roe. There are also rice dishes like chicken rice, seared chicken thigh with egg yolk soy sauce rice, and plain rice. For side dishes, they offer chicken tataki, chicken skin ponzu, chicken liver simmered, chicken chashu, char siu, chicken potato salad, and drinks. Since it was my first time, I chose the chicken soba from the menu. The clear chicken broth soup has chicken oil floating on the surface. Although the soup looks dark like soy sauce, it's not too salty. The noodles are slightly flat and medium-thin. Toppings include two types of chashu (chicken and pork) and Kyoto's Kujo green onions, keeping it simple. The soup mainly features chicken but also has a hint of seafood flavor, creating a well-balanced taste. The flat noodles absorb the soup well, allowing the chicken flavor to come through. Both types of chashu are tender and lean, complementing the light flavor of the ramen. It was a delicious and simple ramen that highlighted the flavor of the chicken. The customers were mostly office workers and students, typical of Kyoto. There were also couples dining together. The chicken soba seemed to be the most popular choice, but some people were also enjoying the aged chicken soba and mixed soba. Two salarymen at a table were enjoying various side dishes with beer and highballs, using the restaurant more like an izakaya. They probably finished their meal with ramen. I'm curious about trying the mackerel salted chicken soba and the ultimate chicken salt ramen with bream and roe next time. This is definitely a place where I would like to try other menu items if I have the chance. It's no surprise that it was selected in the top 5000 on Tabelog.
