I had always longed to visit this restaurant, and finally had the chance to sneak in for a Valentine's dinner. This eel restaurant, established in 1805, is a super long-established establishment. It all started when a person who used to cook for the shogunate opened a stall for the workers at the riverside. The dinner course is the only option available at night, so I made a reservation and visited. We were guided to a spacious tatami room on the 2nd floor. The room was about 15 tatami mats large, with a splendid tokonoma alcove. The room was warm and cozy thanks to the stove. The appetizer was a smoked dish of scallops and oysters on a wooden board, beautifully arranged, which raised my expectations for the following dishes. Beer was served in elegant glasses. The eel takes time to prepare, so I thought I should get a refill soon...while leisurely enjoying the appetizer as a snack. Next, we had white-grilled eel, which was plump and well-grilled, complemented perfectly by wasabi. It was quite a generous portion. Then came the cucumber pickled in three-cup vinegar, a refreshing palate cleanser. This was my second beer. I wanted to have wine, but it seemed they didn't serve glass wine here. When asked if we wanted the eel on a box or separately, we both opted for the eel on rice. By the time the eel box arrived, I was already so full that I thought I might not be able to eat anymore. The underside of the eel box lid also had the restaurant's logo. The pickles included cucumber, daikon, and Nara pickles. Eel restaurants always have such delicious pickles. As for the eel, the sauce was already on it, but they also provided extra sauce on the side. I ended up not adding any more sauce because the subtle sweetness of the sauce was perfect, so I just sprinkled some sansho pepper and enjoyed it. I thought I could manage the amount of rice, but after all, I couldn't finish it... I had to ask my partner to help with the last row (laughs). The miso soup was red miso soup with enoki mushrooms, which was also very delicious. On the way out, I asked the staff about the room, and it turned out we were in the largest room. I had called multiple times on holidays but couldn't get a reservation, so perhaps weekday nights are a good time to visit. By the time we left, our stomachs were so full that I couldn't even think about having more alcohol when we got home (laughs). I never thought I would be so full from eel that I couldn't move, but the meticulous eel menu and attentive service made this dinner truly satisfying. Thank you for the wonderful meal~
