I have known for a while that there is a shop near Osaka Tenmangu Shrine that is the birthplace of battera sushi. They serve lunch from Wednesday to Sunday, so my wife and I decided to visit Sushitsune for the first time. The address of Sushitsune is 2-4-3 Tenjinbashi, Kita-ku, Osaka City, a 3-minute walk from JR Tozai Line "Osaka Tenmangu" Station and Osaka Metro "Minami-morimachi" Station. We arrived at the restaurant at 11:00. There is a green curtain hanging on the wooden lattice at the entrance, and you cannot see inside from the outside. *Actually, I visited on a Thursday thinking they also serve lunch. After disinfecting both hands with alcohol at the entrance, we were allowed to take photos and sat at the counter seats. There was an explanation of the origin of battera sushi, which made us feel the history. The name "battera" comes from the Portuguese word "batera," which customers used to refer to the sushi mold shaped like a small boat. After consulting with my wife (she gets to choose first), I ordered the husband's "live horse mackerel stick set" and the "battera set." The chef skillfully prepared stick sushi and pressed sushi. We were provided with chopsticks, a hot towel, and warm green tea. A small dish was also served. Today's small dish was new potato tofu. The combination of new potato flavor with tofu was unexpectedly delicious! The balance with the rich red miso sauce was exquisite. I felt like having a beer. Please inform them if you want the wasabi removed. The live horse mackerel stick sushi was prepared first and allowed to settle, while the battera sushi was carefully shaped in a small boat mold. I was mesmerized by the chef's knife skills and movements. After a short wait, the dishes were served. I borrowed my wife's portion for a photo of the small dish. When I opened the lid, I saw that today's live horse mackerel was from Yamaguchi Prefecture! Both were beautiful! The live horse mackerel from Yamaguchi Prefecture is famous! Born in the waters off Kyushu and carried by the Tsushima Current to the coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture, the horse mackerel grows by feeding on abundant natural currents and plankton, sardines, and other high-quality food. It is in season right now in June. My wife, the battera set is mine! Let's eat! The thick, freshly prepared live horse mackerel, with bones removed and skin peeled off, was lightly brushed with soy sauce and marinated in vinegar. The horse mackerel was very large, with thick flesh and shiny fat. If you don't pick up the vinegared rice skillfully with your chopsticks, it might crumble, but when you put it in your mouth, the flavor of the live horse mackerel and vinegared rice mix beautifully and taste delicious! I am grateful for the blessings of the sea and Sushitsune! The large shiitake mushroom and cucumber roll was fantastic, with the deliciousness of shiitake and the freshness of cucumber! Feeling apologetic, I added an extra order for a futomaki to take home. One piece of battera for my wife! The aroma of whiteboard kelp and the firmer vinegared rice here had a different taste and were delicious! After enjoying the delicious meal and feeling satisfied, we took the futomaki home, paid the bill, thanked everyone at Sushitsune, and left the restaurant. Husband: Thank you for the meal! It was delicious! I will come again! When I got home, the ingredients in the futomaki were shiitake mushrooms, kampyo (dried gourd strips), cucumber, and egg, all of which were superb! For those who like shiitake mushrooms and kampyo, I would like to use this as a souvenir in the future.

Two people visited the restaurant. They enjoyed tender simmered octopus, seared saury batter, horse mackerel sushi, and yellowtail with shiso roll, along with plenty of sake for a total of 16,500 yen. They wanted to eat sushi, but they were already full. The restaurant has a long history, established in the Meiji era. After a 28-year hiatus, the fourth generation, the grandson, revived the restaurant. It's a shame that there is no one to inherit the traditional taste, and they hope someone will come forward to continue the legacy.

I had some errands in Minamimori-machi, so I decided to have lunch there. I was looking for a place where I could eat sushi nearby, and I found out that there is a restaurant that is the birthplace of my favorite battera sushi! Unlike saba-zushi which uses half of the mackerel, battera sushi is made by shaving off some of the fish from the half and it is served lightly seasoned. The restaurant was clean, and the manager was really friendly, so we ended up chatting for a while even after the meal. It was incredibly delicious, and the portion size was satisfying. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

Osaka / Tenjinbashi [Sushi Tsuneyoshi] Originator of Battera - Lunch only available on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays!! ☑︎ Battera Set Meal ¥1,800 (includes rolled sushi, side dish, and red miso soup) My first time trying Battera! I was lucky to be able to choose between "Konoshiro" and "Mackerel" on this day!! "Konoshiro" is a rare character that only comes in a few times a year. We shared two types between two people, and both were delicious! Mackerel has a familiar taste like in mackerel sushi, but Konoshiro has a new taste. The portion size is a bit small, so it might be a bit lacking for men! Battera means a small boat in Portuguese! The original was Konoshiro, but it seems that mackerel became the main one due to the high price of Konoshiro! The 4th generation master was friendly and the atmosphere of the restaurant was lovely! Excellent customer service, a must-visit restaurant. ────────────────────── Address: 2-4-3 Tenjinbashi, Kita-ku, Osaka 530-0041 ⚐ Business hours: 11:00-14:00 (open only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays) 17:00-21:30 ⚐ Closed: Tuesdays and Wednesdays ⚐ Phone: 06-6351-9886 ⚐ Reservations: ◎ ⚐ Access: 2 minutes walk from Osaka Tenmangu Station ⚐ Parking: - ⚐ Price: Up to ¥1,999 (⚠︎ Prices may vary, please check with the restaurant for details) ────────────────────── Thank you for reading until the end! I had been wanting to go to this restaurant for a while, but my friends kept rejecting it as an option. This time, I insisted on going and finally made it! We had the Ajibou Sushi for 2200 yen, grilled eggplant and myoga in red dashi, and pumpkin tofu in red dashi. The grilled eggplant had a delicious smoky flavor. The Ajibou Sushi had the rice sticking out from the fish, making it a bit hard to eat. The seaweed was slightly tough and the seasoning was just right, making it very tasty. The chef was working alone and seemed quite busy when the restaurant was full. Towards the end of the meal, I started to feel a bit tipsy and had to make an effort not to fall asleep. Despite that, my friend kept asking me silly questions to keep me awake. Overall, it was a great dining experience!

It is said to be the origin of battera sushi. However, we also tried other sushi and they were all delicious. I recommend the ark shell, medium fatty tuna, and more. We were able to get in without a reservation by chance, but since there are only a few seats, it would be better to make a reservation if you want to go for sure.

I couldn't make a reservation so I decided to call, but if it doesn't work out this time, I'll try eating somewhere else. After my night shift, I went to JR Osaka Tenma Station and arrived around 11:00 am. Surprisingly, there was no "full" sign outside, and the restaurant was only about 40% full. I ordered the lunch set, which had a choice between trout and young sardine. Normally, trout is the popular choice, but I decided to go with the young sardine. The edamame tofu appetizer was served first, resembling one I had tried from a famous Japanese restaurant before. The taste was okay, with a hint of light soy sauce. The main dish and red miso soup arrived 9 minutes late. The grilled fish was prepared in a unique way, but as someone who isn't a fan of raw fish, it didn't quite suit my taste. The sushi roll was decent, with sushi rice and seaweed. The red miso soup was rich and had some pickled vegetables inside. I paid 1800 yen in cash and left. This was my second visit to a sushi restaurant from the top 100 list, and I'm not sure where to go for the third one. I'm not a big fan of sushi, as it can be pricey, but maybe I'll try a dessert place instead.

Just a 2-minute walk from JR Osaka Tenmangu Station in Osaka's Kita Ward, you will find Sushi Tsunetane. This historic restaurant, which originated from the invention of battera sushi in 1871, was revived by the fourth generation owner in 2016 after being closed for about 30 years. The name "battera" comes from the Portuguese word "bateira" meaning small boat, as customers started calling the sushi served in a wooden boat-shaped mold this way. Originally made with saury due to the high price of konoshiro, the battera sushi evolved into its current box shape. At Sushi Tsunetane, you can enjoy the traditional battera zan for lunch, served from 11:00 to 14:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The meal includes battera sushi, rolled sushi, a side dish (corn tofu), and red miso soup for 1,800 yen. The saury, tightly packed and marinated with kelp, pairs well with the sweet Kansai-style vinegar rice, creating a harmonious balance of flavors. It was a valuable experience to taste the traditional battera passed down from the previous generation by the fourth-generation owner, preserving the cultural heritage of Osaka. Thank you for the delicious meal!

I had been curious about this sushi restaurant for a while, so I made a reservation and visited. It is said to be the origin of battera sushi, so I was looking forward to trying it. It was my first time at this restaurant, so I opted for the course menu priced at 12,000 yen. There were various other course options available, starting from 3,000 yen. The meal started with a few appetizers, followed by a variety of sushi with different toppings, which were all delicious. Finally, the battera sushi was served. It was not the usual firm pressed sushi, but rather soft and crumbly, which was surprisingly tasty. The battera sushi had a nice tangy flavor, which I personally enjoy. The restaurant only has counter seats for about 7-8 people, and it was fully booked on the day of my visit. It is located right in front of Hanjo-Tei. Unlike the trendy sushi restaurants nowadays, this place has a traditional vibe. If you are a fan of battera sushi, they also offer a course menu featuring just that, which might be worth trying.

I visited the restaurant after work! First, I had sashimi, then the famous battera, and finally some nigiri sushi. The battera is a specialty of this restaurant, and it originated here! The mold used was also the original boat shape from when it was first created! Since it's a counter-style restaurant, I was able to chat with the chef and learn about Osaka's sushi. I feel like trying their rolled sushi next time! I definitely want to go back!

I made a reservation for lunch at 11:00. The restaurant only serves lunch on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. It is the origin of battera sushi. The live horse mackerel skewers sushi was delicious, but the battera sushi is a must-try. Today, it seems they didn't have it available. I ordered the battera set, a side dish of new potato tofu, 7 pieces of battera sushi, 2 rolls, and red miso soup. The battera sushi was soft and crumbly, making it a bit difficult to eat neatly. The mackerel was thin. I've had mackerel sushi before, but this was my first time trying battera sushi. The homemade pickled ginger was chunky. The rolls had a strong flavor with shiitake mushrooms and cucumber. I also had warm tea. Since there were not many customers, I had a chat with the chef. It seems many customers come from far away, some even from Tokyo. The restaurant is located near Hancho-ten. Today, there was a customer who came all the way from Tokyo. I paid in cash for lunch.

Celebrating the 1000th review, this is the 4th installment of the series of restaurants that I want to continue visiting. This time, it's "Sushi Tsune," a sushi restaurant in Osaka known for its unique "live horse mackerel stick sushi." Located near Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, this long-standing sushi restaurant with over 130 years of history is famous for being the origin of Osaka's battera sushi culture. The cozy interior has a small L-shaped counter surrounding the cutting board, and the place is always clean. I personally fell in love with their "live horse mackerel stick sushi," which was recommended to me by a friend. The horse mackerel, sourced from different places depending on the day, has a thick and firm texture, sandwiched between seaweed and wasabi, creating a delicious combination. The rice is slightly firm but melts in your mouth, typical of Osaka-style sushi. The chef is not very talkative but friendly when engaged in conversation. The only downside is that they close at 9 pm, which limits the visitation frequency. Overall, the "live horse mackerel stick sushi" here is definitely worth a try! If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend it.

Sushi Tsune @ Osaka Tenmangu Shrine (Tenjinbashi, Kita-ku, Osaka) - Selected as one of the top 100 sushi restaurants in the west by Tabelog Sushi WEST 2022 - Ordered Items (Food): - Battera (mackerel pressed sushi) ¥1,100 - Anago bozushi (conger eel pressed sushi) ¥3,300 - Tomato and fruit salad with sesame vinegar dressing ¥660 - Ordered Items (Drinks): - Ebisu beer ¥900 - Urakasumi sake ¥1,000 - Senkin sake ¥1,760 Total: ¥8,720 - Personal Rating: ★3.8 - Established in 1891, known for originating the battera sushi. The restaurant is located a few minutes' walk from Minamimorimachi/Osaka Tenmangu Shrine Station, making it easily accessible. I visited without a reservation at 5:45 pm and was able to get a table. The signature battera sushi is priced at ¥1,100 and offers incredible value. I also ordered a few other items. - Taste Impressions: - Battera: The mackerel's acidity and the umami of white kelp are outstanding. The mackerel slices are thin, but considering the price, it's still surprisingly good. The sushi rice has a strong sweetness and acidity, which I really enjoyed. It goes well with sake. The boat-shaped battera is also cute. - Anago bozushi: A sushi roll made with flavorful conger eel and topped with sweet sauce. Also delicious! I would have preferred a bit more sweetness in the sauce, but that's a matter of personal preference. - Tomato and fruit salad with sesame vinegar dressing: A salad with fruit tomatoes, broccoli, green beans, ice plant, and shrimp, dressed in a tangy sesame vinegar sauce. The sesame vinegar dressing is incredibly delicious! I could eat vegetables forever if I had this dressing at home. - Overall Impression: Sharing two sushi rolls and a salad, along with two beers and two servings of sake for less than ¥9,000 is impressive in terms of cost performance. The pricing is surprisingly reasonable for the quality and history of the restaurant. The cozy and clean atmosphere, combined with the unpretentious pricing, makes this place unique. It may not be a lively place, but it's perfect for a quiet meal alone or for a date. Although I only tried the sushi rolls this time, they also offer sushi rolls and nigiri. I would like to come back next time to try those! #SushiTsune #Top100 #TabelogSushiWest2022 #Gourmet #GourmetInstagram #Foodies #Sushi #SushiInstagram #SushiLovers #Osaka #OsakaGourmet #OsakaSushi #OsakaTenmangu #OsakaTenmanguGourmet #OsakaTenmanguSushi #Japan #Osaka #Gourmet #JapaneseFood #SushiLovers #PressedSushi

I visited the restaurant "Tsune-san Hyakumeiten" in Tenmangu Shrine, which was selected as one of the top 100 restaurants in Osaka. I was able to make a reservation even on the same day. I visited a sushi restaurant called Sushi WEST, which was ranked 96th out of the top 100 restaurants in Western Japan in the 2022 Tabelog rankings with an overall rating of 3.68. I visited on a Sunday at 10:55 on March 19, 2023. I made a reservation by phone one hour before their lunch opening at 11:00. The restaurant is located next to Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, and it has a clean and charming interior with an L-shaped counter seating for 8 people. For lunch, they only offer three types of sushi set meals, and I ordered two of them: the Battera set for 1,800 yen and the live horse mackerel stick set for 2,200 yen. The dishes were meticulously prepared, and the flavors were exceptional. The battera sushi had a slightly strong vinegar taste, but it was delicious. The live horse mackerel stick sushi had a perfect texture with freshly grated wasabi on top, which enhanced the flavor. The rolled sushi was also outstanding. The red miso soup was delicious as well. Although the prices were a bit high, the quality of the food and the craftsmanship of the chef made it worth it. I was very satisfied with the food, atmosphere, and service at this restaurant.

Having lunch in Minamimorimachi. I visited a famous restaurant known for being the birthplace of battera near Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. Although I had known about its existence before, this was my first visit. I ordered the Battera set meal which includes battera, rolled sushi, side dishes, and red miso soup. While waiting, I read about the origin of battera. Ah, I see, it comes from the Portuguese word "bateira" meaning small boat. I probably won't ever use this knowledge in my life, but it's another piece of information gained. By the way, I don't usually eat battera, but I occasionally buy similar persimmon leaf sushi at Shin-Osaka Station and quite like it. As I was thinking about this, the dishes arrived. Indeed, the battera is shaped like a boat as the name suggests. I tried the battera right away, and the mackerel, although not thick, had a nice fatty flavor with a unique umami from the white kelp. The vinegared rice was not as tightly packed as typical pressed sushi, surprisingly fluffy. The rolled sushi had a simple filling of shiitake mushrooms and cucumber, but the balance between the sweetness and umami of the shiitake and the refreshing taste of the cucumber was good, making it easy to eat. The sweet potato in the red miso soup might be a hit or miss for some, but I enjoyed it. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Battera is a kind of pressed sushi that originated in Osaka. It is made with mackerel and has a unique vinegar flavor. The restaurant review describes the experience of ordering a Battera set, which includes various dishes such as appetizers, seasonal small plates, and of course, the signature Battera sushi. The reviewer enjoyed the fresh ingredients, the unique flavors of the dishes, and the overall dining experience. The Battera sushi was described as having a soft texture and a well-balanced vinegar taste, different from regular mackerel sushi. The review also mentions the enjoyment of pairing the meal with beer and sake. Overall, the reviewer had a satisfying and delicious dining experience at the restaurant.

I visited this restaurant for lunch, right after it opened on a weekday around 11 am. There were no customers before me, and after me, there were 3 people with reservations. I ordered the "Battera Zen (1,800 yen)" from the menu. While reading about the origin of Battera, I could see them preparing it in front of me using a boat-shaped sushi mold. The first dish served was a small side dish of "seaweed and radish tofu", which had a slightly crunchy texture and a refreshing taste of seaweed and radish. Then, after about 6 minutes, the main dish arrived. The Battera, served on a boat-shaped plate, had mackerel on top with white kelp, and sauce was applied at the time of serving. The vinegar rice was just the right texture, almost melting when pressed. The rolled sushi served with it had a rich flavor of shiitake mushrooms and a crunchy texture of cucumber, which was also delicious. The red miso soup had a bitter and rich taste, with chopped greens and sweet potatoes inside, which was a bit surprising but funny. The overall balance was good, and it was indeed delicious, being the birthplace of Battera. Thank you for the meal! (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)
