Finally, it's starting to feel like autumn. The daytime sun is still hot, but the humidity has decreased, making it less likely to sweat, and there are moments of coolness in the morning and evening. It's the perfect time for hot pot. However, it may still be too early for a heavy, traditional hot pot. So, I decided to try "Ooyama" which just opened in Ginza. I have visited their Ikebukuro branch a few times and it became my favorite chain for motsu-nabe in Tokyo because it reminds me of the motsu I used to eat in Fukuoka - with its similar texture, sweetness, and whiteness. With the Ginza branch now open, I can easily stop by after work, so I made a reservation right away. Upon entering the restaurant on the 9th floor of the building, it felt like Ginza. Wooden tables with black sofas, an adult atmosphere that doesn't seem like a place that serves motsu-nabe. But I was reassured by the friendly and polite staff. One great thing about Ooyama is their "Dontaku Course" (tax included ¥2700), which includes motsu-nabe (choice of soy sauce, miso, or water-based), Fukuoka's specialty mentaiko and beef motsu, salad, and sticky tofu. For us middle-aged people, this is enough to fill us up. As we sipped on draft beer and highballs, the miso motsu-nabe arrived. It had a rich miso flavor, smooth texture, and a strong umami taste from the motsu and garlic. The staff recommended letting it heat up for 2-3 minutes before eating, and it was worth the wait. Ooyama's motsu-nabe never fails to satisfy. The Ginza-style seating charge of ¥500 per person may apply, but with a couple of beers and highballs each, it came to around ¥5000 per person. Worth it.
