Fukuoka's soul food, "Hakata Teppanyaki Yakiniku," which was introduced on the Kenmin Show, originated from the restaurant "Bikkuritei Honke" in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City (near JR Minami-Fukuoka Station), but there are also tribute restaurants popping up in and out of the prefecture. One of them is "Manpukutei," located in Kawabata-dori Shotengai near Nakasu, Canal City Hakata, and Hakata Riverain (Hakata-za). It is a popular restaurant with customers lining up outside during lunchtime. It was once introduced as a regular spot for the talent Rino Sashihara on the TV show "Banana Man's Sekkaku Gourmet." Let me explain! What is Hakata Teppanyaki Yakiniku! "Stamina-packed Hakata Teppanyaki Yakiniku with crispy fresh domestic cabbage and domestic pork fried on a special oil and served on a hot plate. Please try it with our famous spicy miso sauce." The inside of the restaurant is filled with the fragrant smell of garlic (hence, there are many customers, but the ratio of office workers and women is low). I arrived early during the busy hours, so the restaurant was empty, but it soon became full. It takes 15-20 minutes to prepare, so the turnover rate is not very high. Normally, you order items separately. The basic Teppanyaki Yakiniku serving for one person is 880 yen. A regular serving of rice is 150 yen. What sets it apart from the original store "Bikkuritei" and other tribute restaurants is the option for "extra cabbage." The extra cabbage is 50 yen. During lunchtime, there is a great lunch menu set that includes teppanyaki yakiniku, rice, and miso soup. It costs 880 yen for one serving of teppanyaki yakiniku, rice, and miso soup. Hakata Teppanyaki Yakiniku is quite salty and seasoned with a lot of MSG, so it is a dish that goes well with white rice. You can choose between regular and large rice, so I chose the large size. I ordered one serving and two servings of Hakata Teppanyaki Yakiniku. If you order the lunch set, one serving costs 880 yen, and two servings cost 1,700 yen. A must-have item for Hakata Teppanyaki Yakiniku. Wooden spatulas and spicy miso sauce. Place the wooden spatula on one side of the hot plate and tilt the plate so that the fat accumulates on one side. Dissolve the spicy miso sauce in the fat and enjoy it with the meat and cabbage. The meat used is pork sagari (offal meat). It has a low fat content and a firm texture. The cabbage is crispy at first, but it becomes soft as it cooks. Hakata Teppanyaki Yakiniku is characterized by its high salt and MSG content, but this one has an even stronger saltiness. It's a dish that goes well with unlimited white rice and beer. It was a bit too fatty, almost like an ajillo (laughs). Thank you for the meal. They also offer a teppanyaki yakiniku and beer evening set. This is not a place suitable for children, as the taste is definitely not child-friendly (laughs).
