Staying at the same hotel for multiple nights can get a bit boring when it comes to meals, so we decided to switch to Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel for the second night. I made the reservation through J, and we stayed in a Japanese-Western style room at the Shizenkan, which was 52 square meters and non-smoking. The package included 90 minutes of all-you-can-drink two types of draft beer, and dinner was a buffet at Marskoi. The total cost for two people was 44,660 yen, but after applying the Go To Travel discount and local coupons, the actual price came down to just over 22,000 yen.
We checked in and headed straight to the communal bath. It was crowded and not very appealing, so I didn't take any photos this time. However, I must mention that the view from the outdoor bath was quite nice. For dinner, we headed to the dining hall for the buffet starting at 19:15. We quickly scanned the food options, put on disposable vinyl gloves, and started eating. My companion ended up with about 7 crab legs, but struggled to eat them properly, so I had to help out with that. I enjoyed the sake-friendly dishes like hokke rice sushi, sweet and sour pickled herring, and icefish salad. The flow ice curry looked impressive but was actually quite easy to eat with a nice spice level.
I also tried the nigiri sushi selections, opting for enagawa and yuba, then left it to the sushi chef to recommend the remaining three pieces, which turned out to be red shrimp, tsubu, and bigeye tuna. The all-you-can-drink option was priced at 2,900 yen per person for 90 minutes, but I had already included it in my package, so I couldn't use the local coupons for it. I ordered plenty of beer, but I learned that it's better to order ahead when the place is busy.
The next morning, we had breakfast on the second floor, which featured scallop rice and an abundance of eggs. The bamboo grass roll bread and kelp noodles were interesting, but the best dish was the scallop and squid asparagus stir-fry, which was delicious both in the morning and the night before. The smoothies (pineapple and melon) were extremely cold – my companion drank it too quickly and ended up with a headache. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, I would recommend this hotel to buffet lovers. Thank you for a pleasant stay.
