Pochi Pochi
A limited-time menu item, Curry Udon Katsu Don, has been released at Mise Soba. This menu item was available last year as well, and I missed out on it, so I was really disappointed. When I first saw the name Curry Udon Katsu Don, various combinations came to mind. Is it a set of Curry Udon and Katsu Don? Just Curry Udon? Katsu Curry? Katsu Curry Udon? Curry Katsu Don? With four combinations, it was a bit confusing due to the amount of information. Looking closely at the description, it seems to be a hybrid of Curry Udon and Katsu Don, like Toyohashi Curry Udon. Mise Soba has brought back its shocking creation! Curry + Udon + Tonkatsu + rice all topped with a poached egg! The cost performance is amazing with a great volume! It's a bold menu item for Mise Soba. I must try it this year for sure. I arrived at the Mise Soba on Higashi Street. This restaurant has three tables in addition to standing counters. I managed to get a seat as I missed the lunch rush. I ordered the Curry Udon Katsu Don for 800 yen. It's a bit on the high end compared to the usual 500 yen dishes at Mise Soba. As I sat at the table, I waited with a glass of water. And here it came. I could smell the curry. Wait, it's actually Katsu Curry Udon. Where's the rice? When I asked the waitress, she told me the rice is at the bottom. I checked all the way to the bottom and found the rice. Structurally, the Curry Udon is sandwiched between the Tonkatsu and rice. To describe the state accurately, it's like a Katsu Curry Udon Donburi. Checking the thickness of the Tonkatsu is a must for me even in moments like this. I took the first bite, and it tasted like Katsu Curry Udon. The Tonkatsu is placed on top of the Udon, with curry and beaten egg poured over it. It's not too thick and has a light broth. The curry-flavored broth of the Udon is different from the Western-style curry seasoning, and it's quite delightful. The combination of the curry-flavored broth and Tonkatsu creates a unique flavor, different from Katsu Curry. It's even more compatible than Katsu Curry. Curry Udon is such a comforting dish, especially in cold weather. As I continued eating, the rice made its appearance. It's like when you finish the Udon in a Curry Udon set and then add the rice. I was brought up to believe that adding rice to the soup is impolite, so I appreciate it when it's already included. Then came the ladle, which made it much easier to eat. I hope the hybrid of Curry Udon and Katsu Don, Curry Udon Katsu Don, or what I would call Katsu Curry Udon Donburi, becomes more widespread, not just at Mise Soba. I hope that restaurants serving Curry Udon and Tonkatsu will consider adding Katsu Curry Udon Donburi to their menus.
