Dinner on a one-night trip was at Masuda in Kyoto. The dashi broth was gentle and packed with deliciousness. Kyoto is a charming town that is hard to put into words. I visited after work. The Kyoto-style Obanzai dishes were prepared with care and were very delicious. I didn't have much time to eat slowly, but each dish paired well with sake, so I would like to come back and enjoy it at a leisurely pace next time.

I was looking for a dinner place in Pontocho during my trip to Kyoto, and I found this restaurant. We were a group of 5, so I made a reservation for 7:30 in advance. The phone call was very pleasant, giving off a good vibe. The restaurant was a bit intimidating from the outside, but we decided to go in anyway. Once inside, we were directed to a table seating area at the back where we had to take off our shoes. The restaurant was very clean and we were the only customers, probably due to it being a weekday during the pandemic. The dishes were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. We ordered dishes like tempura of butterbur sprouts, boiled watercress, firefly squid, deep-fried tofu, and boiled eggplant. Each dish cost around 1400-1600 yen. It's worth noting that it seems necessary to have someone who understands Japanese if foreign visitors come. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a Kyoto dinner experience! I can't wait to go back again! Thank you for the wonderful meal!

I learned about this shop from reading a book by Kazuhiko Ota. It used to be a place where influential people from the political and business world gathered every night during the previous owner's time. I visited on April 9th. It was a time when the situation with COVID-19 had calmed down, and both Gion and Pontocho were incredibly crowded, making it difficult to walk. I made a reservation and visited. The quality of the food here is amazing. Everything was carefully prepared. The rapeseed blossoms (appetizer) were delicious, and the mackerel sushi, bamboo shoot tempura, and eggplant miso dengaku were all excellent.

※Please note that photography is not allowed inside the restaurant, so only the exterior can be shown. I visited this place based on a recommendation from a gourmet celebrity that this is where you can find authentic obanzai dishes. Despite hesitating for a moment at the entrance, the interior was very clean with a beautiful counter. The dishes were not flashy, but you could feel the careful attention to detail in the preparation. Truly Kyoto! It might be more suitable for two men to enjoy a quiet meal rather than a date. The staff's response when making a reservation was energetic, polite, and made me think that this is a wonderful restaurant.

Visited on a holiday night for the second time. It's a delicious restaurant serving obanzai dishes. I won't mention the prices. Photography is not allowed. It is said that the famous author, Shiba Ryotaro, was a regular customer, and there are large handwritten calligraphy decorations. We had beer, medium bottle, with oolong tea, and the following dishes: green bean salad, celery kinpira, mackerel sushi, simmered octopus, Wakasa flounder grill, hijiki, Kyoto-style grilled bell peppers, and plenty of Kujo green onions (nuta). With rice and red miso soup, the total for two people was 10,450 yen. It was very delicious. We enjoyed many healthy dishes.

I visited the famous restaurant "Masuda" in Pontocho for the first time. Unfortunately, photos were not allowed inside, but I enjoyed delicious dishes and drinks. I had a sashimi platter with bonito, sea bream, and octopus, all very fresh and tasty. The duck roast and deep-fried taro were also amazing. I recommend them! The simmered dish, red miso soup, and pickles were all delicious too.

Pontocho recently feels like it's being taken over by foreign tourists, with many shops catering to them. However, with the help of a local guide, I discovered a precious old tavern where you can enjoy the tension of the past and Kyoto cuisine. Despite being full at the counter, we were lucky to find a table and enjoyed a premium malt. We ordered dishes like pickled vegetables, octopus, and other Kyoto specialties. The perfect amount and exquisite flavor made it a top-class tavern.

This is a delicatessen in Kyoto's Pontocho. I made a reservation and stopped by before getting on the shinkansen. No photos allowed here, sorry. The appetizer of egg tofu with citrus fragrance sets the mood. I ordered the chef's selection of 3 dishes. Steamed pike conger: perfectly cooked, in season and delicious. Plum sauce is just right. Fried eggplant: crispy and goes well with oil. The broth is refined. Vegetables: winter melon, yuba, taro, etc. Well-balanced flavors. Also had crab, boiled octopus, and vinegared mixed vegetables. Vinegared dish with assorted seafood: a bit early but firm and good. Fried gluten: a hit, with a satisfying texture. For sake, I chose Kamoizuru. Enjoyed the barrel-aged version. Elegant and peaceful atmosphere, a stark contrast to the outside hustle. Will definitely come back!

I revisited the long-established obanzai restaurant, Masuda, in Pontocho. I felt a sense of unease in the atmosphere inside, but I was told that they renovated the interior two years ago. It made me realize how time flies, as I must have not visited for over two years. Previously, there was a raised seating area opposite the counter, and there was a sign in the restaurant saying "Up to 2 drinks per person," giving it a slightly retro Showa-era feel. However, the taste of the obanzai has not changed at all! My favorite dish here is the simmered okara. The seasoning of this okara is exquisite and definitely cannot be replicated at home. I enjoyed dishes like soft-shelled turtle and round eggplant, and finished off with exactly 2 drinks. I think this is the perfect first stop in Gion and Pontocho. On my way out, I happened to glance at the wall and saw the framed sign about the 2-drink limit. Just like in company personnel changes, things change with the times, huh...

Pontocho is a representative alleyway in Japan. Its narrowness, length, and the variety of unique shops make visitors feel like they are far away from the real world. Starting from the entrance of Shijo Street with neon signs, heading north along the alley. There are many shops with English signs and banners targeting foreign tourists. Some even have a tropical Southeast Asian style mixed with Japanese elements. As you go further, the number of foreign visitors decreases and the atmosphere of the shops becomes more appealing to Japanese gentlemen. On the left, you spot today's destination. Time to enter. The interior is made up of a long, curved counter. On top are plates of assorted obanzai dishes. This is it! Unfortunately, photography is not allowed inside. Sip on hot sake slowly. The dishes are gentle and elegant. You can feel the craftsmanship of the chef in each dish. Sophisticated, adult-like, Kyoto-like. A blissful time. ◆Mackerel Sushi ◆Red Snapper Sashimi ◆Konjac and Lotus Root ◆Mackerel with Sansho Pepper ◆Yuba Shinjo ◆Okara ◆Jako Stewed with Man'nenji Pepper

I visited a traditional Kyoto obanzai restaurant with my foreign friend to introduce them to Japanese culture. We were able to try a variety of dishes in small portions, which made it easy to choose what we wanted to eat. My friend doesn't eat pork due to dietary restrictions, but we were able to find options that suited their needs. They were delighted and it was heartwarming to see their joy. The locals at the restaurant also joined in the conversation, sharing their enthusiasm for our cultural exchange. It was a simple pleasure to see our culture appreciated by others. The restaurant staff kindly took a couple of photos of us together, despite the no-photo policy for the food. The sake served in wooden barrels was excellent, with a sweet taste and a hint of cedar aroma. My friend also enjoyed the flavor. The dishes we tried, including eggplant, tofu skin, duck, and fish roe, were all delicious and elegantly presented. The highlight was the marinated mackerel with ginger, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. It was my first time trying this type of mackerel, and it paired perfectly with the ginger. We ended the meal with a comforting bowl of tea-infused rice porridge. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience. Thank you for the hospitality. The atmosphere in Pontocho reminded me of Shinjuku's Golden Gai, and I felt a nostalgic urge to come back.

This time, we went to a restaurant recommended by one of the members of our adult field trip group. They asked the restaurant to create a course for us, leaving it up to them to decide what to serve. Honestly, I don't remember anything particularly delicious from the dishes they served us, which was disappointing. I checked the restaurant's reviews on Tabelog later, which is unusual for me. When I looked at other customers' reviews, there were many dishes that looked delicious. Maybe having a pretentious course menu didn't work out well. If I have the chance, I would like to visit again to confirm.

My friend visited Kyoto on October 9, 2015, so we went to Masuda in Pontocho. Despite the similar appearance of the surrounding shops in Pontocho, I have missed this place every time I have been here. The restaurant serves small dishes to accompany drinks, but their drink selection is not extensive. It seems like a place where you can simply enjoy the food. As a result, the bill is not too high. The restaurant is easy to enter, making it a good introduction to Kyoto's traditional cuisine.

It was a fantastic restaurant that I would definitely visit if it were near my home. The food was amazing, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was great too! I tried "moro-ko age" for the first time, as well as a small dish of yuba and sansho pepper, and tempura of butterbur sprouts. The eggplant and mizuna were all incredibly delicious. The gentle seasoning was very soothing. Since I couldn't take photos at the restaurant, I made sure to engrave the wonderful dishes in my heart and on my taste buds. I definitely want to go back again.

A nice atmosphere at the restaurant. I didn't take any photos because it had a good vibe. It was clean, and I mainly enjoyed small dishes with Japanese sake. The main sake was Kamosu, a delicious sake from Hiroshima that paired well with the dishes. The menu isn't extensive, but everything that came out was delicious, like the sashimi.

Recently, I have been coming to Kyoto quite often, so this time I decided to visit this restaurant after a long time. I completely forgot that taking photos was not allowed, and the landlady reminded me by saying, "No photos..." But no matter what I ate, it was delicious! The array of obanzai lined up at the counter was impressive. Among them, the broiled hamo and simmered eggplant were the best.

This is a restaurant in Kyoto that serves delicious mackerel sushi and tasty vegetable broth. However, the cost performance is not great. It would be better if they offered more variety of alcohol besides Kagetsu.

This is a local restaurant. I went there based on a recommendation from a senior, but the prices were unclear, and in the end, it was quite expensive. The taste is just average. I wouldn't come back here for a private visit.
