Title: "Osaka Trip with Seishun 18 Ticket in December 2021 Part 6: Osaka Kitano, Of Course Cabbage Yaki"
On the second night of the Osaka trip with Seishun 18 Ticket, I met up with a friend, Saki, who had some errands to run in Kobe Shinkobe. We decided to have dinner in Minami. At Saki's request, we decided to start with Cabbage Yaki. There are only a few Cabbage Yaki shops along the loop line, such as Cabbage Yaki Ion Mall Osaka Dome City and Cabbage Yaki Tsuruhashi Main Store. This shop is conveniently located for fun activities in Minami before or after. When we arrived at 6:09 PM on Saturday, there were two staff members and no other customers in sight.
Cabbage Yaki costs 160 yen for one piece and 300 yen for two pieces, making it 20 yen cheaper. Since there were two of us, we decided to buy two pieces and share. The Cabbage Yaki was served promptly and I would rate it 9 out of 10.
Cabbage Yaki: 9 points
Cabbage Yaki is made with a wheat flour batter, cabbage, pickled ginger, egg, and deep-fried tempura bits. It has a shape similar to okonomiyaki but with a thinner batter, resembling a crepe. The texture is similar to a savory crepe. When you take a bite, the soft texture of the batter, the crunch of the cabbage, and the richness of the egg blend together, creating a mini okonomiyaki-like flavor. The texture is more like a crepe, making it an interesting taste experience. Even though I have eaten it many times before, it still tastes delicious! In fact, it might be tastier than okonomiyaki or savory crepes, and it's cheaper too! I remember when I first found out about this shop, they were selling it for around 105 yen per piece. The price has gone up significantly, but I still think 160 yen is a good deal. Also, there is Tabasco available at the shop, and when you drizzle it on, it adds a spicy kick, making it a perfect snack with alcohol. I would love to take it home and enjoy it with Tabasco as a drinking snack!
After satisfying our stomachs with Cabbage Yaki, we decided to walk around Minami in search of a kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) shop. On a busy Saturday in December, will we be lucky enough to find one? To be continued in the next part. (2021.12.11)
