Located just a few minutes' walk from Exit 6 of Tamagacho Rokuchome Station (Nagahori Tsurumi Ryokuchi Line or Tanimachi Line), you'll find "Gasho," a two-story establishment that feels like it's been converted from an old townhouse. The wall that extends all the way to the ceiling and the indirect lighting create a unique atmosphere that will make you say "Wow!" upon entering. With nostalgic Showa era songs playing in the background, it's a super nice space where you can leisurely enjoy your drinks for as long as you like. I arrived a bit before the 18:00 opening time and was able to enter smoothly. There are three counter seats with teppanyaki grills for two people each, as well as several tables for four, and additional seating on the second floor.
I ordered the "rolled omelette," "chicken thigh steak," and "butatama (okonomiyaki)." Although they are meant for sharing among two or more people, I, a light eater, was able to enjoy them all by myself. The rolled omelette, with its slightly rich flavor that pairs well with alcohol, was just right for slow eating while chatting in the cozy ambiance of the restaurant. The chicken thigh steak, moist and juicy, served with steak sauce, had a nice flavor that wasn't overly sweet like teriyaki sauce. It was another perfect match for drinks. And the butatama, a size that goes well with alcohol, was a must-order item to accompany your drinks and other dishes. With its reasonable price in the 800 yen range, both the taste and cost performance were satisfying. The slightly runny batter, crunchy cabbage, and fragrant shiso leaves all contributed to a delicious combination. My personal favorite part was the egg spread on the bottom of the okonomiyaki, giving it a subtle charred taste like a sunny-side-up egg, which was really delicious.
The timing of the dishes was also well-coordinated, probably thanks to the hardworking head chef in the visible kitchen. I could sense the rock'n'roll vibes coming from the chef as he diligently cooked the dishes at the right moment. I'll definitely be back, as the monjayaki seemed to be a popular choice among other customers. Someday, I'll try the monjayaki too! But for now, the okonomiyaki was delicious.
