I went to this restaurant for dinner when I was traveling alone in Kyoto on December 1, 2011. I had heard about this place from my family, so I had already decided to have dinner here. It's located in the Isetan department store directly connected to Kyoto Station, so it's easy to find. I arrived at the restaurant around 8:30 pm and was seated right away, probably because it was a bit late for dinner. Since I was alone, I sat at the counter by the window. They had regular shabu-shabu (with ponzu sauce and sesame sauce) and a Kyoto-style hot pot with mizuna (I think it was ponzu sauce). I chose the regular shabu-shabu which cost around 6500 yen, the second-highest price tier. The meat was delicious, as expected from a meat shop. The service was very polite, similar to hotels or other shabu-shabu restaurants. The udon as a finishing dish was also tasty. Since it's a restaurant in a department store, they didn't charge a service fee, which felt like a good deal. The counter seats make it easy for solo diners to enjoy a meal. If I have the chance to visit Kyoto again, I would love to go back. I revisited the restaurant in December 2011. Last time I had shabu-shabu, so this time I tried the oil-grilled dish, which is famous in Kyoto. I had the Matsus (sirloin). The thick slices of meat are marinated in a black sauce before grilling in a pan with oil. The meat was tender and delicious, although I found the sauce a bit too strong. It was my first time trying oil-grilled meat! I revisited the restaurant in November 2012. Since I regretted not having shabu-shabu last time, I ordered both the Bamboo (5040 yen) and the Special (around 8000 yen). Obviously, the appetizers and desserts differed between the two options. The meat quality was also different, with the Special having more marbling. The Bamboo was good, but a bit tough in some parts. The Special was delicious, and I especially liked the sesame sauce which was not too sweet. The grated radish was quite spicy, so be careful with the amount. Last time I had udon as a finishing dish, but this time it was mochi which was also tasty. Unfortunately, the customer service at the reception was quite disappointing, and the lack of separation between smoking and non-smoking areas was unpleasant. I visited the restaurant again in March 2023 during a trip to Kyoto. Since it was a day trip and this was my only chance to visit, I called ahead for a reservation but they were fully booked. So I decided to try my luck and went there directly before 6 pm. At that time, there were four groups waiting. I got a ticket and sat on a bench, then I was called to sit at the counter where I could see Kyoto Tower in front of me. I ordered the Prime Fillet Steak and grape juice. The grape juice was not the expected purple color but more like apple juice, dark and delicious. The meal included five appetizers (beef, firefly squid, temari sushi, etc.), a soup with young bamboo shoots and beef, steamed cherry snapper, and the fillet steak cooked medium rare. It was a bit redder than I expected, but the hot iron plate allowed me to cook it to my liking. The meat was tender and very tasty. The dessert was strawberry mousse, which was a bit too sweet for my taste.

It was my first time here. I received impeccable service in terms of the atmosphere, cleanliness of the store, staff service, and the appearance and taste of the food. It was delicious. When I get off the train in Kyoto, I always make sure to visit this restaurant before heading back. It is located on the 11th floor of Kyoto ISETAN, making it easily accessible. I love the service where a woman in a kimono guides you to your seat and offers hot towels and roasted green tea. The meal is well-balanced with soup, salad, meat, pickles, and rice, and the taste is perfect. I always make a reservation and wait anxiously outside the restaurant as my train departure time approaches. This time, I informed them that my train was leaving in 40 minutes, so I ordered the roast beef set meal. They served it to me in just 5 minutes, showing their professionalism as a long-standing establishment. It's a special restaurant that I always want to visit before leaving.

Arrived at the restaurant on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Made a reservation beforehand. While other restaurants had long lines, this one was relatively empty. Ordered the sukiyaki set. The waitress cooked it for us. The taste was really delicious. The portion size was not huge, but you could get free refills of rice. The meat in the photo is for 5 people. Finally, we were served fruits for dessert. The price was a bit high, so I may not come back, but it could be a good choice for a special occasion.

It seems that Moritaya is a famous butcher shop in Kyoto. They were at Isetan Kyoto store, so I went for lunch. They had steak, sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, etc., but I chose the Wagyu sirloin steak bowl. They asked me how I wanted the meat cooked, and I chose medium. The meat was cooked perfectly and was tender and delicious. It's clear they specialize in meat. I later found out they also have a location at Osaka Umeda's Lucuaile. I definitely want to go back again. It was a great meal.

You can drink beer with the sound of sizzling. "Moritaya JR Kyoto Isetan" in Kyoto Station building. For Shiga residents, it is a great thing to have delicious food gathered around the station building. When it comes to Moritaya, there are various ways to eat such as shabu-shabu, steak, and oil grilling, but for now, I always order sukiyaki. The courses start from "Ume" and go up to Bamboo, Pine, Special Selection, and Ultimate... There are different stages, but the number of dishes and grams of meat do not change, only the meat itself changes. I ordered the Ultimate course. You can't have a lot of refills when you order this. All the happiness is gathered in those few slices of meat (lol). Affordable meat is perfect for children or those with a big appetite. But the peak of deliciousness in terms of grilling is limited. If you have expensive meat, it tastes good even when raw or burnt. They grill it for you, and we just eat. Even the sound of sizzling is an indispensable item in hospitality. There was a saying in the past that "someone who doesn't know the taste of meat eats sukiyaki." If it's not delicious to eat, you can just say so. Regardless of the various theories about the history of sukiyaki, it is a great invention by the Japanese to bring out the deliciousness of beef to the maximum. I visited Moritaya at Kyoto Isetan in early April. It's popular among locals so I was curious to try it out! They had a variety of menu options, but I chose a dish where you can try a little bit of everything. There was so much food that it couldn't even fit in the camera frame! It was a fun experience trying out different dishes. By the way, Moritaya was quite crowded even during weekday lunchtime.

Today, I was supposed to go from Osaka to Kawaramachi, but the Hankyu train stopped due to a human accident, so I took the JR train to Kyoto Station instead. Since it was lunchtime when I arrived, I decided to have lunch here. I have visited Moriita-ya Lucua Ile store and Moriita-ya Kiya-machi store several times before, and I have always been satisfied eating their Sukiyaki. This time, I ordered the affordable Wagyu hot pot for 2420 yen, but it was a disappointment. To be honest, it was not tasty at all. The meat was dry and tough, and the sauce seemed like a store-bought one, which didn't match well either. I was surprised by how different it was compared to Sukiyaki. Thank you for the meal.

The table can only fit one pot, so three people ordered the same sukiyaki. They also ordered an additional sirloin steak with the smallest portion of 150 grams. Salt is not included. The sukiyaki meat today is from Kumamoto. They cook it for you from the zaramé. They also crack the eggs for you.

We had the ultimate sukiyaki course and fillet steak at Moritaya for the first time. There were three of us, and one had to catch a bus, but they kindly accommodated us and we were able to enjoy our meal without feeling rushed. It was delicious! The cherry blossom mochi rice soup served at the beginning was so filling.

I wanted to eat something delicious near Kyoto Station, but I was alone and unsure where to go. The area near Kyoto Station was crowded with people, even on a weekday. I decided to splurge and try a high-end restaurant, choosing a place where I could have sukiyaki by myself for the first time. The restaurant had tables surrounded by partitions, creating a welcoming atmosphere for solo diners. The prices were high, even for lunch. The premium option was around 9000 yen, all made with sirloin meat, but I opted for the next level down, which included two slices of marbled sirloin and one slice of lean thigh meat, costing about 7000 yen. The meal started with appetizers, and I enjoyed the view of Kyoto Tower as I savored my lunch. When the meat arrived, it looked expensive and my expectations rose. The staff cooked everything for me. The first bite was delicious, and I thought, "I made the right choice coming to this restaurant." I found the flavor a bit strong, but when I mentioned it, they adjusted the seasoning for the second slice, which was even more delicious. The thigh meat in the third slice was also tasty, but a bit tougher than the sirloin. I was glad I chose the option I did. The premium option seemed a bit fatty. It was a luxurious lunch. I found it interesting that I had to eat the vegetables myself, and the inclusion of burdock root was unusual to me. I learned that burdock root is common in the Kansai region because it adds flavor. I will try to include it in my cooking. Dessert was included at the end. Although I initially enjoyed the view of Kyoto Tower and the beautiful weather, I soon found myself focused only on the meat. It was not a refined experience, but it was a luxurious lunch that left me very satisfied. I would like to challenge myself to try this restaurant's city location next time. On this day, I ordered the Wagyu beef sirloin steak course. I think Moritaya is famous for sukiyaki, but I chose the steak and ended up regretting it. (laughs) I have had Moritaya's meat for sukiyaki at home several times, and I remember it being more delicious than grilling. The salad was the most delicious thing I ate this time. However, the view from the seat was amazing.

Morita-ya in Kyoto Station Building. It was crowded on a Saturday, but I didn't have a reservation. I waited in line around 10:30 and was able to get in without any issues. The view of Kyoto Tower was nice from our table. The sukiyaki was delicious. It was a wonderful memory of our trip! Thank you for the meal ^ ^

This is a branch of a famous Kyoto restaurant located above the Isetan department store at Kyoto Station. Moritaya is well-known for its sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, and oil-grilled dishes in Kyoto. The best thing about this branch is the amazing view! It's easy for solo diners, and from the counter seats, you can see Kyoto Tower and Higashi-Honganji Temple right in front of you. If you're familiar with Kyoto's geography, you can also spot places like Shijo-Karasuma, Chion-in, and Mt. Hiei while enjoying a delicious meal. I visited for lunch on a weekday and opted for the one-bite steak with an extra portion, which cost 3,300 yen including tax. It was so delicious! I realized that I didn't even need the extra portion to feel satisfied. The location is convenient from Kyoto Station, the view is great, and the atmosphere is calm. The prices are a bit high, but the spacious seating and overall satisfaction make it worth it. I really enjoyed my time there and will definitely be coming back. This time, I ordered the sukiyaki course. It was around 5000 yen. I think the best part about dining at a traditional Japanese restaurant like this is that you can enjoy seasonal ingredients, which makes your body feel really good. The sukiyaki was especially delicious! I wanted to ask for more raw egg, but I hesitated because I wasn't sure if it would cost extra. In the end, I was too timid to ask and didn't get any more. It had been a while since my last visit. I arrived around 12:20 on a Sunday and there were 3 groups ahead of me in line, but I was called in after about 10 minutes. The view of Kyoto was beautiful from the restaurant. I was able to relax and enjoy my meal. I had the steak, but now I regret not choosing the sukiyaki instead. The steak was a bit fatty, but still delicious.

I went to Isetan for lunch! You can order only the vegetables and tofu napa cabbage if you like. The portions are generous, with two large pieces of meat included. The lunch set costs around 5,000 yen, but it's worth it. I couldn't resist ordering extra meat. The takeout meat kumoi? is also delicious. This time, I enjoyed shabu-shabu instead of sukiyaki.
