Fukuoka business trip, day 2. Had a heavy drinking session the previous day, so I visited Bikkuri Tei Takamiya Store to boost my stamina. The restaurant is located about a 2-minute walk from Takamiya Station. Bikkuri Tei is a specialty store for yakiniku teppan (not teppanyaki) that originated in Minami Fukuoka in 1963. I usually visit the Takamiya store. I arrived around 11:35 and could smell the delicious aroma from 100m away. The restaurant has a simple facade and interior, with seating for about 20 people at the counter and in a raised tatami area. We were seated in the raised tatami area for two people. The table was set with condiments like spicy miso, chopsticks, and toothpicks, and there were tissues and a trash can under the table. The menu offers yakiniku (for one, one and a half, or two people) and kimchi, and rice only. This time, I ordered the following: - Yakiniku for 2 people: 2,000 yen - Large rice: 200 yen, for a total of 2,200 yen. When ordering for two people, make sure to say "Double!" As a sign of victory, ice water is served in a glass jug. After about 5 minutes, the sizzling yakiniku (double), pickled daikon on top of rice, and miso soup arrived. You can also get a refill of miso soup. Before eating, prepare by 1. placing the stick (geta) from the table under the iron plate, 2. tilting the iron plate to collect plenty of oil at the edge, and 3. adding the spicy miso from the table to the oil. Dip cabbage and pork in the oil with spicy miso, bounce it on the rice, and then into your mouth. You'll be hit with a triple combo of garlic, oil, and spicy miso! Bikkuri Tei's yakiniku is addictive and indulgent. It's a place to drown in oil rather than just eating meat and cabbage. I managed to finish despite feeling full. The smell on clothes and hair was overwhelming, so I took a quick shower and did laundry immediately when I got home. This is the Bikkuri Tei experience. When you're hungover or tired, craving Bikkuri Tei's yakiniku is a must. Definitely worth a visit.
