Conclusion. Live cooking of salmon Chan-chan yaki near the dining table in the restaurant is good for creating an atmosphere. The Okhotsk sashimi set meal is... Heading west towards Abashiri from "The Road to Heaven (Shari Town)" for sightseeing. On the way, we had lunch in the nostalgic Shari Town. In my younger days, I used to be a vegetable buyer and used to travel to Hokkaido frequently, including visiting Shari Town, neighboring towns like Koshimizu Town, and Tokoro Town several times from around 1988 to 2000. The meal consisted of a group menu with salmon Chan-chan yaki as the main dish, along with sashimi and other items. "Okhotsk sashimi set meal with Chan-chan yaki." Although it is Hokkaido, the expectations for mass-cooked meals, including ingredients, are low as it requires preparing dozens of meals within a limited time frame. However, being a tourist restaurant, they have prepared a live event. The salmon Chan-chan yaki was cooked live near the dining table in the restaurant. The kitchen area and the customer seating area need to be separated by doors, so I have concerns about the hygiene of such live kitchens, but it was exciting and fun. Chan-chan yaki is a staple dish at our barbecue gatherings, but eating it in its place of origin gives a different impression, which is the real pleasure of eating locally. I was particularly interested in whether they grilled the salmon from the skin side or the flesh side, a common practice in local cuisine. The restaurant adopted the orthodox method of grilling from the skin side. I always grill both half fish and eel from the skin side. For filleted fish, I place the skin side up. In other words, the side placed on the plate should face up. Before the Chan-chan yaki was ready, I had the "Okhotsk sashimi set meal." I tend to focus more on the ingredients than the cooking, so I noticed things like slightly melted salmon roe, frozen and thawed squid, small and discolored spot prawns, etc. While thinking it's not perfect, I enjoyed the meal while watching the live kitchen. I didn't have much appetite due to overeating at the hotel's breakfast buffet and the sudden change in plans, making lunchtime before 11 am, but I am grateful for being able to experience the Hokkaido vibe. ↓ Shari-dake is beautiful (taken from the moving bus)(refer to the image in this section) ================== ◇ Shiretoko Shari Garden House Fuji-en Hokkaido Shari-gun Shari-cho Koyo-cho 69 ================== ◆ Hokkaido dining articles - 01/28/2023 Shiretoko Shari Garden House Fuji-en (Hokkaido) - 01/01/2023 Okhotsk "Sea Dawn" Utoro Crab - 11/12/2022 Kushiro Ramen Kawamura - 11/06/2022 Kawabata (Hokkaido Shibetsu) Scallops and Striped Shrimp - 02/19/2021 Kikuyo Shokudo New Chitose Airport Store - 02/12/2021 Flower Land Kamifurano Kuwa-yaki - 01/29/2021 Mt. I stopped by on a bus tour. I had the sashimi set meal. It was fresh and delicious, but considering the price, maybe other restaurants would be okay too. I also tried the salmon Chan Chan Yaki. As expected, it was very delicious, the rice also went well with it. They say you can get refills of the Chan Chan Yaki, so if you want to eat a lot, definitely try it!

We visited for lunch during a group trip. They prepared the chanchan-yaki right in front of us in a grand manner, and served it fresh on our plates. The miso sauce was delicious and went well with the dish. The shrimp and squid in the chanchan-yaki added a nice touch, surprising us with their flavors. The grilled salmon was crispy and flavorful, and the cabbage was fresh and crunchy, specially sourced for okonomiyaki in Osaka. The dish was more cabbage-centric than salmon, with various side dishes to fill us up. The potatoes were a unique variety not commonly found in Tokyo. And let's not forget the beautifully glossy white rice. Lastly, the hostess's stories were entertaining. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

We had lunch on a tour and had squid sashimi, simmered potatoes, tororo kelp miso soup, nanatsuboshi rice, and pickles. The main dish was "chanchan-yaki," which was cooked right in front of us. It was seasoned with miso, sugar, sake, and kelp powder. You could have seconds. Since dishes seasoned with miso are rare, I thought it was interesting. Personally, I prefer salt-based sauce, but my husband seemed to really like it and had seconds. The staff kindly explained the ingredients to us at the restaurant.

On the second day of my trip to Hokkaido, I had lunch at this place! I left Lake Akan in the morning and headed to Lake Mashu. From Lake Mashu, I went through Mt. Io to get here. The place is called "Garden House Fuji-en", located near Shiretoko Shari Station along National Route 334. There is a separate building called Silo-tei, which adds a stylish touch. In the parking lot, there are several signs from the old national railway era. Upon entering the store, it has a souvenir shop atmosphere on the floor. Although it says "restaurant" on the left side of the entrance, it doesn't quite feel like one. Upon further investigation, it turns out that this place is actually a wedding venue. It was a bit surprising, but as I entered a private room at the back, I started to get a sense of it being a wedding venue. This time, I had "Salmon Chan Chan Yaki" in what seemed like a banquet hall. The staff cooked and served the "Salmon Chan Chan Yaki" right in front of us. The staff were friendly and created a very homely atmosphere. Due to this, it didn't feel like a wedding venue at all. It seems that the restaurant can also be used by regular customers, but the details are unclear. This time, lunch at this place was included in the package tour. Therefore, I would like to refrain from giving a rating using stars as the cost performance cannot be evaluated. The weather was great from the morning, and I was in a good mood when I visited. The cheerful and friendly service left a strong impression. The main dish, "Salmon Chan Chan Yaki", was truly delicious. The sauce for the Chan Chan Yaki was particularly good, sweet and versatile for other dishes too. The sauce was so versatile that you could eat it with just rice. I even imagined it would be delicious with horumon (offal). Originally a fisherman's dish, it is hearty and the seasoning was probably quite rough. It used to be made with Atka mackerel, but now salmon has become more famous. Also, Hokkaido is famous for potatoes, and the seasonal Maruimo potato in the "Nikujaga" dish was amazing! Surprisingly, this area is also known for black beans, and the black beans simmered with kombu were delicious. Oh, Hokkaido is truly full of delicious food, and 2-3 days is not enough. I realized that you need at least a week to fully enjoy Hokkaido's gourmet delights.
