お猿と狸
Behind the station in Obihiro City, Hokkaido? About a 10-minute walk from the south exit. I wanted to try the delicious soba from Tokachi, which is also known for its soba production, so I had two options near the station, but I chose this one, more out of curiosity than anything else. I visited during lunchtime on the weekend, and although it was empty when I entered, it quickly filled up. Surprising! It seems to be quite popular. Perhaps everyone is a tourist, as their attire doesn't look like typical Hokkaido residents... At first, I imagined this old soba shop being run by an elderly couple who had been doing it for years, but the interior was surprisingly clean and neat, and a young couple were managing it. Now, onto the order. After much deliberation, I decided to go with the recommended menu item, the Tempura Soba with fresh sakura shrimp and burdock for 1,000 yen. The young lady promptly set up the tray in front of me, while the husband was busy cooking in the kitchen. Both of them were wearing matching navy blue T-shirts under their aprons, giving off a fresh vibe. The soba arrived first, and it was served with tempura on a separate plate. The tempura's appearance was a bit disappointing. The burdock was thinly sliced and fried to a dark brown color, looking like thin cylindrical discs. The soba, on the other hand, was thin but had a firm texture, reminiscent of Hokkaido-style soba. The dipping sauce had a slight spiciness, more similar to Kanto-style than Hokkaido-style. It had a strong soba flavor, which I quite enjoyed, but it might not be to everyone's taste, especially those from Tokyo. The soba was not too long, making it easy to eat. Now, onto the tempura. Unfortunately, the tempura was overcooked and too hard, not bringing out the flavors of the burdock and sakura shrimp. The tempura in a regular burdock soba dish was thick and cut vertically into quarters, giving a nice balance of crispy and tender textures. The lady skillfully plated the tempura, showcasing a good amount of it. While the tempura was a letdown, the burdock tempura dish at a similar price point seemed more appealing. I prefer cold soba, but maybe warm soba is more suitable for this place. Overall, the restaurant is trying its best, but I hope they reconsider the tempura. Next time, I'll probably try the warm burdock tempura. As a soba place in Obihiro, it has a good vibe. By the way, it seems like a nice place to have a drink at night too. They may not have a strong alcohol image, but with this young couple, I think they could attract a decent crowd. What do you think? Sorry for my presumptuous comments. I need to reflect a bit. Anyway, thanks for the meal. Keep up the good work!
