Today I came to Kyoto! I was supposed to arrive in Kyoto in the morning, but due to some urgent matters, I ended up arriving at night. First, I visited a popular restaurant in Nishii, then moved to Higashiyama and finally went to "Marshin Restaurant," a famous long-established Chinese restaurant founded in 1977 known for its specialty "Tianjin rice." I have been curious about this restaurant for a while, especially about their famous "Tianjin rice," so whenever I visit Kyoto, I always consider it as an option. Today, even though I arrived quite late, I was excited to finally visit this restaurant. The restaurant has a striking black and red sign, and as expected, there was a long line. I arrived around 10:30 pm, and there were about 20 people waiting in line. After waiting for about 45 minutes, I was finally seated inside. The interior of the restaurant was spacious with a traditional Chinese atmosphere. The seating was only at the counter, but due to the measures taken for preventing splatter infection, it felt safe to dine alone. I looked at the menu and ordered the famous "Tianjin rice" (850 yen) and Gyoza (360 yen). The Gyoza arrived a few minutes after ordering. The crispy and slightly oily surface looked delicious. I tried the Gyoza as it is, and it was delicious! The size was moderate, with a good amount of vegetables and pork filling, enhanced by the flavors of aromatic vegetables. The skin was crispy and flavorful, not too thick, and had a chewy texture. I also tried it with vinegar, chili oil, and soy sauce, but my favorite was the restaurant's recommended vinegar and pepper condiment, which added a spicy and tangy kick to the Gyoza. Shortly after the Gyoza, the Tianjin rice arrived, and it looked as appetizing as I had seen in pictures. The thick and savory sauce with fluffy egg and slightly firm rice was delightful. The sauce, made with starch, became progressively looser over time, but it was so delicious that I couldn't stop eating. Overall, the prices were reasonable, and both the Tianjin rice and Gyoza were flavorful and satisfying. I realized later that all the Gyoza were made with aged pork, which I had assumed earlier, but the menu clearly distinguished between them. I enjoyed the Gyoza so much that I couldn't miss out on trying them, and I appreciate the late-night opening hours and the variety of other menu items. I look forward to visiting again to try more dishes when the timing is right!
