This is a chain restaurant called "Don Tei" that specializes in sukiyaki and shabu-shabu, owned by Yoshinoya Holdings and has outlets in the Tokyo metropolitan area and Osaka. This restaurant offers quite a good deal for lunch. They have daily one-coin lunch specials, soba and sushi sets, ginger pork set meals, and other hot pot set meals. On this particular day, I tried the "Beef Sukiyaki Set Meal," which may seem similar to Yoshinoya's offering. Let's compare the differences between Yoshinoya's "Beef Sukiyaki Set Meal" and Don Tei's version.
- Yoshinoya's "Beef Sukiyaki Set Meal" for 650 yen (750 yen for large portion) includes beef sukiyaki, one bowl of rice, one egg, and a small serving of pickled cabbage (extra meat for 300 yen, extra green onions for 100 yen).
- Don Tei's "Beef Sukiyaki Set Meal" for 750 yen (850 yen for large portion) includes beef sukiyaki, unlimited rice, unlimited eggs, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. The ingredients for the sukiyaki are almost the same, with only a difference in the way carrots are cut. Both restaurants use solid fuel to heat the dish, and the ingredients like beef, cabbage, green onions, chrysanthemum leaves, tofu, maroni, and udon are common. The difference lies in the fact that at Don Tei, you can have unlimited rice and eggs, and miso soup is included in the set. Despite the 100 yen price difference, it can be considered a good deal. Additionally, unlike Yoshinoya, Don Tei offers a calm and comfortable dining environment. In terms of taste, it is honestly not much different from Yoshinoya, if not the same. However, the act of having sukiyaki for lunch in a traditional Japanese setting can be seen as a bit bourgeois, but for 750 yen, it's a bourgeois experience worth trying. Enjoy!
