Located directly above JR Tennoji Station, adjacent to Kintetsu Osaka Abenobashi Station. This Chinese restaurant is located on the 4th floor of the Tennoji Mio Plaza building. I stopped by for lunch. Bai Le is a well-known Chinese restaurant along the Kintetsu line, operated by Kintetsu Retailing, with other branches near Osaka Uehommachi Station, Kyoto Station, Kintetsu Nara Station, Gakuenmae Station, and Oji Station. "Bai Le" means "many happiness, many joys," and its origin comes from the Chinese book "Xunzi," which quotes "A wise ruler must first govern his country, and then he will obtain many joys within it." The restaurant has a total of 80 table seats, with a rare location that offers a view of both "Abeno Harukas" from the south window and "Tsutenkaku" from the west window. This time, I was drawn to the "Happiness (Xingfu) Campaign" displayed at the storefront and decided to dine in. Upon being seated, I quickly placed my order using a tablet. This campaign is a limited-time offer only for this month (September 2023), where you can enjoy the discounted "Happiness (Xingfu) Set" for 1,600 yen and receive a "Bai Le Mooncake" by answering a survey on your smartphone. The "Happiness (Xingfu) Set" arrived promptly. The tray included dishes of Happiness Mapo Tofu, Happiness Spicy Fried Chicken, egg drop soup, almond jelly, rice, and pickled vegetables. The aroma of Sichuan pepper rises from the Happiness Mapo Tofu dish. This is likely due to the "Kio Sansho" sprinkled on the Mapo Tofu. When you take a bite of the Mapo Tofu, the complex spiciness from Sichuan chili peppers and the strong numbing sensation from Sichuan pepper hit you at once and then gradually subside. The refreshing flavor of Kio Sansho lingers in your mouth. The deep umami taste comes from dried tangerine peel. The numbing sensation from Sichuan pepper is quite powerful compared to the spiciness. The soft tofu brings all these strong flavors together, resulting in a well-balanced dish. Of course, it pairs perfectly with rice. The Happiness Spicy Fried Chicken is generously sprinkled with spicy chili peppers, giving it a visually spicy appearance, but the spiciness is not overwhelming due to the numbing effect of Sichuan pepper. The crispy coating and juicy interior make it a high-quality fried dish. The soup is egg drop soup, with a simple yet comforting taste. Although rice is refillable, I was already quite full after this meal. Finally, I cooled down with almond jelly. Just when I finished eating, jasmine tea was served, which was fragrant and delicious. It seems that Bai Le is trying to make "Happiness Mapo Tofu" its signature dish, as they have even created a website dedicated to this dish. Bai Le may become known for its "Happiness Mapo Tofu" in the future, as there is a strong connection between Kintetsu and Sichuan cuisine, with Sichuan cuisine being a specialty at the Toko Hotel, another Kintetsu Group property.
