千本桜はんひち
After the first three days of the new year, I decided to go to see a Bunraku performance by myself. I drove to Kameoka first to buy some strawberries, then visited Okame-san in Hozenji Yokocho to offer my New Year's greetings. The Bunraku theater started at 5:30 pm and ended at 8 pm, so before heading home, I decided to have some sushi. My goal this year is to visit different sushi restaurants in the city. I had checked out a few places, but many were closed, so I gave up and thought about having udon at Imai in Dotonbori before heading home. However, as I was strolling along Soaihashisuji, I stumbled upon a bright sushi restaurant - Sakae-san! When I used to live in Osaka, I frequented their shop in Tsuruhashi often, although it seems to have closed down now. This is what I call "city sushi" - casual, inexpensive, and decent in taste. I sat at the counter, ordered a beer, and got a complimentary dish of pufferfish skin for 400 yen (it's a seating charge). I also ordered octopus simmered in soy sauce for 800 yen, followed by various sushi items like squid, mackerel, conger eel, tuna, squid legs, rolled sushi, and more. I can't remember what sake I had. Unfortunately, there was no horse mackerel or saury, which was a bit disappointing. City sushi is meant to be enjoyed with plenty of soy sauce, and the vinegar rice was slightly sweet, not too vinegary, which I liked. The portions were quite generous, and the mackerel was particularly delicious, while the conger eel was piping hot and fluffy. The total bill came to 6,640 yen, which was quite reasonable. I also saw the two shamisen players I met earlier at Okame-san's establishment, who were performing live at an izakaya nearby. I might review that place in the spring. I usually stop by a bar near Minami-Morimachi Station, but lately, I've been calling it a night after just two stops and heading home early to get some rest. That being said, the next day is the 13th, so let's give it our all!
