For lunch one day, I decided to try out the popular restaurant called Kazagai in Hirakata, which I had always been curious about. When I arrived before noon, the parking lot was full, indicating its popularity. Upon entering the restaurant, I had to leave my shoes at the entrance and choose between sitting at a table or in a tatami room. I opted for a table seat. The restaurant had a buffet area in the center, tatami seating in the back right, and regular table seating elsewhere. The left side of the table seating was separated by curtains, giving it a semi-private feel, making it suitable for larger groups. I ordered the okonomiyaki set meal with unlimited rice, miso soup, and pickles, choosing the pork and egg variety. Despite it being a weekday, the lunch rush was evident, but I managed to get a table quickly. After a short wait, a bowl containing the ingredients for the okonomiyaki was brought to my table. To my surprise, I had to cook it myself! I started by grilling the pork on the hot plate, then mixed the egg, cabbage, and flour together on top. Once combined, I spread the mixture in a circular shape over the pork and cooked it through. While it cooked, I helped myself to rice, miso soup, and pickles from the buffet area. Once both sides of the okonomiyaki were cooked, I brushed it with sweet sauce, sprinkled bonito flakes and seaweed over it, drizzled a bit of mayonnaise, and added some spicy sauce on top. It was ready to eat! The spicy sauce had a good kick to it, balancing well with the other flavors. Eating okonomiyaki with rice may seem like a lot of carbs, but it was a perfect comfort meal, especially during the winter. The miso soup with seaweed was slightly warm, and the pickles were tasty. Even without getting seconds of rice, I felt satisfied. Traditionally, okonomiyaki should be made with powdered bonito flakes, but this time I had it with shaved bonito. Mayonnaise, once considered unconventional, has now become a regular topping. The Osaka rule of not touching each other's okonomiyaki or sharing is still upheld, even when dining with family. My stomach was full and satisfied after the meal. It was delicious! Paying 760 yen was worth it. Thank you for the meal!
