I decided to visit "Fukusuke Shoten" on a whim that day.
◇Exterior and Interior
I entered the restaurant casually. The atmosphere inside was truly traditional and reminiscent of a typical Japanese pub. However, it seemed newly opened and was very clean. So, is this really a traditional pub...I had my doubts. They were playing endless Showa era songs in the background. But, the sound was really loud...maybe I was sitting in a bad spot. Also, there was a TV but the sound was drowned out by the music. Moreover, the seating was not ideal for a solo drinker. There is a smoking area and it is a partially smoking establishment.
◇Seating
They had counter seats, tables for 2, tables for 4, sunken kotatsu seats, tatami sofa seats, and standing drinking spaces, offering a variety of options.
◇Menu
The menu was typical of a traditional Japanese pub, with items like kushikatsu and individual hot pots, which was convenient for a solo diner. I ordered the following:
- Doteni (280 yen) - Priced for 2 pieces. It was simmering right in front of me at the counter. The taste was not as strong as I expected, more on the lighter side, and the texture was thin. It was easy to eat, but lacked a punch. The staff suggested adding shichimi spice, but I thought if they wanted it, they should have added it from the start. Personally, if you order this, it's better to go for the Niku Tofu (420 yen).
- Kushikatsu - I ordered beef, tulip, shishito pepper (140 yen), pork belly, quail (120 yen), etc. They provided a teacup for dipping sauce instead of double-dipping, with dashi-flavored sauce inside. Interesting concept. The most delicious one was the asparagus and quail.
◆Highlights
They offer a lemon sour with attention to detail for 290 yen! That was great. Also, the individual hot pot was good.
◆Service
The staff were all energetic and friendly, making the atmosphere welcoming. It suited the concept of the restaurant.
◆Summary
What stuck with me until the end was whether it was truly a traditional pub or just styled like one. The choice of background music, the interior design, the menu, etc., all reminded me of a traditional pub, but the newness, spacious interior, and lack of history accumulated, the decisive factor was the customer base. As Kokura has some areas that have declined, if this place can attract a good customer base, then it truly is a traditional pub. This is not a criticism, but I feel that these types of establishments need time to naturally establish themselves and determine their success. I hope they keep up the effort! Thank you for the meal! ^ ^
