On the third day of my business trip in Fukuoka, I finished my errands in the Tenjin area and went to enjoy a solo lunch at the original motsunabe restaurant Rakutenchi Tenjin Acros branch. The restaurant is located about a 5-minute walk from Tenjin Station, directly connected to the Acros Fukuoka B2F underground shopping area. Rakutenchi is a well-established motsunabe restaurant with multiple branches in Fukuoka city. I arrived around 11:45 am to find a casual and open entrance with a seating capacity of 120 seats. There were only 3 groups of customers when I arrived. I chose a table for two and was provided with various condiments on the table, including motsunabe seasoning, chili peppers, chopsticks, toothpicks, and a call button. After being seated, I was served water. For lunch, they offered motsunabe on its own, the "Best Memories of Hakata" set, and motsunabe curry. I ordered the "Best Memories of Hakata" set for 1,620 yen, which included motsunabe for one person, tofu, sumotsu (beef intestine), a tamago from the JR Kyushu Seven Stars train, a choice of noodles or rice to finish the meal, and a choice of strong carbonated water or oolong tea to drink. For an additional 275 yen, you could upgrade to a glass of draft beer or highball. The best part was the 10 free toppings provided, including yuzu pepper, cheese, cilantro, black pepper, mentaiko (spicy cod roe), gochujang (Korean chili paste), black vinegar, motsunabe seasoning, wasabi, and mentaiko mayonnaise, all self-service and unlimited! (Although cilantro and cheese were not available during my visit.) The food and drinks arrived one after another in about 6 minutes. The generous amount of leeks piled on top was impressive! In addition to leeks, there was plenty of cabbage, making it easy to get your daily dose of vegetables. The quality of the motsu (offal) was decent, and when combined with tofu, it provided a good source of protein. The rice and egg were served not as ochazuke (rice in tea) but alongside the motsunabe for a delicious tamago kake gohan (egg over rice). The oil-marinated mentaiko, available for free refills, paired exceptionally well with the rice! Since I eat out almost 100% of the time during this trip, having a well-balanced hot pot lunch like this was truly a lifesaver! I highly recommend visiting this restaurant!
