Title: "Osaka Trip in January 2023, Day 3 - Strong Dashi Soba and Fluffy Onigiri"
It's the morning of the third day of my Osaka trip in January 2023. After sleeping for about 10 hours the previous day and feeling refreshed, I am ready to explore Sakai today. I head to Nankai Soba inside Shin-Imamiya Station for breakfast. It's a bit hidden inside the station, but I manage to find it after descending the stairs from the platform. I order the morning soba for 350 yen, which is cheaper than the soba and inari sushi combo I had at Matsuya the night before for 370 yen. The service is quick, and I am called in about 25 seconds after submitting my food ticket.
Rating: 8/10
The soba noodles are thick and a bit chewy, similar to packaged noodles you find in supermarkets. The broth is strong and closer to Kanto-style with a rich flavor. Toppings include tenkasu and green onions, with plenty of tenkasu. The meal also comes with onigiri, tamagoyaki, and pickles, making it a great deal.
Overall rating: 9/10
The breakfast soba is affordable and delicious, surpassing my expectations for station soba. The noodles are average, but the broth is flavorful. The onigiri is a pleasant surprise, with two mochi-like rice balls, sweet tamagoyaki, and pickles. The restaurant even has a beer server, tempting me to try the beer set. Exciting times at Nankai Soba!
Later on, I arrive at Sakai Station and rent a bicycle for 500 yen to explore Sakai City, starting with the Risho no Yakata museum to learn about Sen no Rikyu and Yosano Akiko's history.

I had the morning set meal (350 yen) with soba noodles. The soba noodles had only tempura bits and green onions as toppings, along with two rice balls sprinkled with furikake and pickled cucumbers and kinpira burdock. I was surprised when I tasted it. It was completely different from the lightly flavored soba noodles I remember from the past. The noodles had a strong soba aroma, and the dipping sauce had a rich flavor. It was much more delicious than before. I decided that I would choose soba noodles again next time. Thank you for the meal.

In July of the 5th year of Reiwa, the morning set from 7:00 to 10:00, including soba, 2 rice balls, kinpira gobou, and pickles, is priced at 350 yen including tax. It offers a good cost performance and is delicious. The service is fast and the taste is satisfactory considering the price, making it recommended for busy office workers.

It's hot and I'm tired so I don't feel like walking, but when I get hungry, I always go to Nankai Soba without hesitation! I ordered the beer set for 500 yen for the first time, which includes a draft beer and 3 pieces of fried chicken, a great deal for just one coin. I thought the fried chicken would be smaller, but it was surprisingly big and very hot, so be careful not to burn yourself. I went with my usual favorite, the squid tempura soba, which is only 450 yen, almost like a bargain! I felt like having another beer, but I didn't want to bother with buying another food ticket, so I gave up on that. The best part was riding the train home with the air conditioning working well. Thank you for the meal!

Recently, I've been busy and don't feel like going anywhere, but I'm hungry and craving beer. In times like this, my only choice is Minami Kaisoba. Having a beer with a side of squid tempura soba! And the best part is, you can enjoy it even with a short stay. It's really convenient that it's located in the station. Thank you for the meal today as well.

The restaurant is located below the Koya Line. They have round chairs where you can sit and eat. I had Kitsune Udon for 350 yen and added a raw egg for 80 yen. It's not as good as Matsuya at the north end of Jangjang Yokocho, but it's convenient when you're in a hurry. Since it's in Osaka, I wish the broth was a little less spicy.

I visited the restaurant "Nankai Soba Shin-Imamiya Store" for lunch on this day. It is located inside Nankai's "Shin-Imamiya Station". I purchased a meal ticket from the ticket machine in front of the store and then entered. I bought the popular "Onigiri Set Meal for 410 yen", which includes kake udon and two onigiri. The special noodle boiling machine of Nankai Soba was working properly in this store as well. In front of my seat, there was an object of the chopstick tower, which used to be a symbol of Nankai Soba but unfortunately disappeared due to the new coronavirus. For Nankai Soba lovers, this restaurant is worth visiting just to see this. Thank you for the meal!

Cheap, quick to eat, and convenient for catching the train, Nankai Soba in the station is still the best choice! Personally, I prefer Shin-Imamiya over Namba. It's located on the former site of the Tenkyu Bookstore, so the interior is spacious with chairs available, which is a nice change from standing while eating. While other places are raising their prices, this spot has remained affordable, which is a relief. However, it's disappointing that they don't have onigiri after 7 PM on Fridays. It's a good place for a casual drink. Recently, with the increase in tourists in Shinsekai, it's become crowded and harder to visit other restaurants, but this one is located in the station area, so there are hardly any tourists around, making it a great spot for solo diners. Thank you for the meal.

I am "Noronori," who mainly walks around eating lunch in Sakai. This time, I got off the train a little early, which is convenient because I don't have to go through the ticket gate! Since I came at 8 in the morning, I decided to try the limited breakfast set menu available from 7 to 10. It costs only 350 yen and comes with two rice balls. They start preparing it as soon as you hand in your meal ticket. The rice ball toppings seem to change daily or occasionally. The set also includes rolled omelette and pickled vegetables. You can add as much tempura flakes and green onions as you like. Eating delicious soba in the morning makes me feel energized and grateful for starting the day well. Thank you for the meal.

Whenever I feel like eating soba after drinking, I always end up here. I always order the squid soba! In the morning, I might go for kitsune or tanuki soba, but at night, the chances of getting squid tempura are extremely high! The squid tempura itself is not particularly delicious, but the batter, which is generously soaked in broth, is indescribable. The squid is chewy and satisfying in just one bowl. Thank you for the meal.

I visited the Kansai region to climb Mount Koya and Mount Rokko, and also enjoyed exploring local cuisine. During a brief stop at Shin-Imamiya Station to transfer from JR to Nankai Electric Railway around 9 am, I had a quick meal at the standing fast food restaurant "Nankai Soba" (now with seating available). I tried the tempura udon (350 yen). The noodles seemed to be boiled, so I didn't expect the same firmness as Sanuki udon, but the broth had a rich bonito flavor and the tempura was also very good. It's a great spot to grab a quick bite during the busy morning hours. In addition to soba and udon, they also offer various rice balls, rice bowls, tempura, as well as skewers and beer sets, making it a perfect place to unwind after work. It seems like a little oasis for commuters to take a break during their commute.

350 yen. Soba at the station! I must have come here when I was in elementary school! I don't remember, but I used to live nearby, and I feel like the soba I ate at the station was delicious! It's great to be able to eat quickly while waiting for a 10-minute transfer at Shin-Imamiya! It's good to have social distance in these times, and warm soba on a cold winter platform is effective!

■Impressions
About a year ago, the Nankai Soba in Shin-Imamiya Station was renovated and it looks a bit cleaner now. The store has a soba-like atmosphere, with all seats being counter seats with chairs. There are appetizers priced at 100 yen and 200 yen, with several options to choose from. I chose the dashimaki tamago, which I thought would go well with Japanese sake. When the dish was ready, I thought they would call my number, but since it wasn't busy, they brought it to me. The dashimaki tamago seemed to be microwaved and was a bit dry and firm, with three slices of pickled ginger served on the side. They provided soy sauce, but it was also good without it. For the finale, I had the simple kakesoba. I ordered using the meal ticket I had purchased earlier and when I handed it in, my order was quickly prepared. The Kansai-style dashi, flavored with bonito, urume, and kelp, was clear and refreshing since there were no tempura or other toppings. The boiled noodles were slightly soft, typical of soba. The toppings were kamaboko and green onions only. For 790 yen, I had a light meal and a perfect way to finish with a drink. It was cold outside, but the hot sake and soba made me feel warm.

It's been a while since I went to work early in the morning, so I decided to have breakfast at Minami Kai Soba. I arrived at Shin-Imamiya before 7 o'clock, so I waited a few minutes until it opened. When it opened, a few people came in at the same time, so it seems everyone was waiting. I ordered the morning set for 350 yen plus 70 yen for tempura! It was a luxurious breakfast and I was able to eat until I was full. It's very budget-friendly and convenient. Thank you for the meal.

I have used the South Osaka favorite, Nankai Soba, many times (this is just my personal opinion as a South Osaka native). The first time I used it was at the Haruki store. It was located about a minute's walk from Haruki Station on the Nankai Main Line. It brings back memories, but it's no longer there. Whenever I'm in Namba, Shin-Imamiya, or Tennoji, I always end up stopping by. These days, I mostly use the Shin-Imamiya store. It used to be around where the current 551 is located. Now it's been cleaned up and even has chairs. My recommendation here is the Senbero set for 500 yen (you can choose between draft beer and a 200 yen appetizer). I usually go for the draft beer and fried chicken. I also order a 200 yen appetizer ticket and get the dashimaki tamago. I also buy a 300 yen highball ticket and hand it over at my own pace. With just 1000 yen, I can get freshly made fried chicken and dashimaki tamago, so there's a bit of a wait. But the taste is amazing, even better than your average izakaya. I usually get a highball refill and finish with soba, all for just 1600 yen and get change back. How about stopping by for a quick Senbero while waiting for a transfer?

Somewhat hidden, the South Sea Soba shop exists quietly. According to their official website, "Since the opening of the first store on the 2nd floor of Namba Station in 1966, we have been satisfying the hunger of the people along the line." It's a long-standing establishment. The interior of the shop is surprisingly spacious, clean, and all seating is at the counter. Today, I tried the "Sansai Soba" for 320 yen. It's the quality you would expect from a standing soba shop, but among station soba, I found the taste to be quite enjoyable. Sansai soba can be disappointing if the flavor is weak, but this one was delicious. I didn't notice today, but according to the official website, "At Shin-Imamiya Station, you can enjoy not only soba and udon but also alcohol and snacks, making it a great place for a 'quick drink after work♪'." Oh, I see. Other reviews also show appetizing side dishes. The beer set for 500 yen is quite affordable. I must try that next time. In Kansai, the station soba trend seems to be fading. "Hankyu Soba" has become "Wakaba Soba." South Sea Soba, Sanyo Soba, Hanshin Soba... I hope the private railway station soba shops continue to do well.

This time I traveled to Osaka to watch a soccer game. Last night, I enjoyed some good drinks and went on a journey to find a stand-up soba shop before heading to the stadium. I knew there were some shops near the station, but they were all closed. Thinking the shops inside the station would be open, I even bought an entrance ticket and went to Soba Shin-Imamiya store. I usually eat tempura udon before the game, so I did the same this time. It was still lightly flavored as usual (laughs). Maybe that's better for me since I drank too much yesterday. Thank you for the meal.

On this day, I was ordered by my company to attend a certain training in Kyobashi. After receiving intensive training until the afternoon, I decided to have lunch on my way back at Shin-Imamiya Station. I passed by the South Sea Soba shop, which I have passed by hundreds of times. Usually, when I pass by here, it's either when I'm going to Umeda or Kyoto for fun, or when I'm heading back and not in the mood to think about food. Finally, I was able to enter the shop in a hungry state. I purchased a ticket for the mixed topping set meal (430 yen) from the ticket machine. The soba was topped with plenty of tempura flakes, which I am familiar with and find delicious. And the seasonal mixed topping rice was octopus rice. This octopus rice was full of ingredients and incredibly tasty. It was quite filling, delicious, and all for less than a coin, which I am truly grateful for. Recently, I have been enjoying soba from well-known restaurants, but I still think these popular soba places suit me better (laughs). Thank you for the meal!

Just as I was transferring at Shin-Imamiya Station, it became lunchtime. I felt like having udon today. I remembered there was a standing udon shop over there. The shop was located at the back of the underground passage. As I was deciding what to order, I noticed they had a lunch set for 500 yen. "500 yen, huh. Not bad even if it's not great." The set for the day was a kakiage-don. The kakiage-don was quite small. Well, for 500 yen, it's understandable. The soba was also at a standing udon level. Well, for 500 yen, it's understandable. It's a friend of salarymen. This 500 yen set is reasonably satisfying. I hope they continue it for a long time.

Nankai Soba @ Shin-Imamiya
May 23, 2022
It's been a bit hot recently, so I'm getting a little tired of the usual meals!! For lunch, I had the standing soba zaru soba for 440 yen inside the Nankai Shin-Imamiya Station. Even though it's pre-cooked, the soba noodles that have been boiled and then chilled in ice water taste delicious. The aroma of seaweed and wasabi is nice, and the quail egg is a nice addition too (lol). Thank you for the meal!

During a break from work, I visited ✨. I was hungover, so I wanted to feel the taste of dashi... I ordered udon and oyakodon (daily special) for 500 yen! I prefer udon over soba because the dashi is sweeter. Both the donburi and udon were so big and satisfying, I would be fine paying 500 yen for just one! I was happy to see lots of green onions in them. Nowadays, there are more women who delicately eat noodles on top of their chopsticks, but I slurp them heartily. Haha, there was an old man sitting across from me drinking bottled beer... I was envious...♡ Haha, it was delicious♡ Thank you for the meal^_^
